Memorial day is a time to reflect on Us conquests and failures – in film

25 May 2012 10:06 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Hollywood goes for blockbuster returns on Memorial Day, but how do the Us-centric hyper-macho films perform overseas?

Memorial Day is fast approaching, so naturally one's thoughts turn to the Fallen, and to the shared sacrifice of European and American continents as they united in common cause against the spectre of global tyranny. But that's enough about the reviews for Battleship.

"A preposterously lunkheaded salute to American naval machismo" snorted Tim Robey in The Daily Telegraph. "It seems that the Us Navy is as much committed to the production of this film as is the toy company" opined Le Monde's Thomas Sotinel. As news of the hostile European reception spread, American critics equipped their reviews with a pre-emptive Euro-snob missile defense shield. "That the movie didn't exactly receive hosannas in Europe should surprise absolutely no one. This is a Super-American movie," bristled Jeff Simon of Buffalo News. "It would be like »

Anderson Cooper explains laughing fits to Jimmy Fallon

23 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In addition to his stellar reporting and news anchoring abilities, Anderson Cooper has made quite a habit of breaking into fits of giggles during his RidicuList segments on AC360, which are as endearing as they are hysterical. Last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Cooper addressed his inability to keep it together while reporting on absurd happenings such as Gerard Depardieu’s airline urinating incident, and, most recently, while he explained the celebrated Polish-American holiday of Dyngus Day. Repeating his admission that he laughs like “a 12-year-old girl meeting Justin Bieber for the first time,” watch what else Cooper »

Colin Firth To Play Noel Coward In 'Mad Dogs And Englishmen,' & Co-Star In Rupert Everett's Oscar Wilde Biopic

22 May 2012 12:50 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Colin Firth is set to play famed English playwright Noel Coward, in the Willy Holtzman-penned project, “Mad Dogs And Englishmen,” about Coward’s eventful two week stay at The Desert Inn in Las Vegas in 1955. Although there’s still no director attached, this seems like a great role for the actor to sink his teeth into, as Coward was famous for what Time called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise.” So we’ll be definitely be looking forward to this project in the future. [Screen Daily]

Two giants of the Scandinavian cinematic world, Lone Scherfig (“An Education” and “One Day”) and Pernilla August (“Beyond”), are set to join forces together on an adaptation of the classic Hjalmar Söderberg novel, “The Serious Game.” The novel follows a couple who meet early in life, go their separate ways and then meet again when they are married to other people. »

Braquo Season One DVD Review

4 May 2012 9:15 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The recent spate of powerful euro-centric police procedurals to crop up on both terrestrial TV and Sky have managed to gain the approval of critics and audiences alike. One of these celebrated shows proudly wears its Us influences on its sleeve while managing to retain that dark and sobering tone found in neighbouring programmes such as The Killing.

Braquo (season two is current being screened on FX) has been billed as a France’s answer to The Wire, but in reality it has much more in common with another cop drama from across the pond, The Shield. Not only does one of the Parisian police crew share more than a passing physical resemblance to Shield star Michael Chiklis, but Braquo is also cut from a similarly pulpy (and at times, preposterous) cloth as that series, which was set in the fictitious Los Angeles area of Farmington.

Well we're back again with the bumper crop of must-have DVDs and Blu-rays for the month of May – from historic Italian epics to underground American sensations to a chilly, expressionistic film noir to movies where Raquel Welch plays a Vegas showgirl fleeing a murderer – we’ve got them all hear for you. So look on below to see what's worth your money this month....

"1900" (1976) Blu-ray

Why You Should Care: At the time of its release, Bernardo Bertolucci's historical epic was said to be the most expensive (requiring the financial commitment of three major studios – 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and United Artists) and ambitious ever mounted in Italy. It's a tale of two friends (played by Robert De Niro and Gerard Depardieu), born on the same day at the dawn of the 20th century, and the way that their lives crisscross, intersect, and diverge wildly over the rocky course of history. »

Of course it’s still early days yet, but with a somewhat awesome first image now surfacing online, it’s not difficult to see why it might be a contender.

Suraj Sharma will be making his acting debut as the eponymous Pi, with the rest of the cast including the likes of Tabu (The Namesake), Irrfan Khan (The Amazing Spider-Man), Adil Hussain (Agent Vinod), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), and Gérard Depardieu (Mesrine).

First Two Pictures from Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi'

I haven't read Yan Martel's Booker Prize-winning novel so I don't really have any perspective from which to judge this first picture from Ang Lee's Life of Pi, which was adapted from the story of the same name. In the image you see Suraj Sharma as the titular character, Piscine Molitor Patel, a well-to-do zookeeper's son who leads a rich life acquiring a broad knowledge of not only the great religious texts but of all literature, and has a great curiosity about how the world works. However, political changes in India cause the Patel family to choose to move to Canada where Pi ultimately finds himself adrift in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and, as the picture makes quite clear, a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The rest of the story chronicles Pi's 227-day voyage across the Pacific, and the powerful story of faith »

Leave it to Ang Lee to make a movie about a kid stranded on a lifeboat with a bunch of zoo animals, including one ferocious, hungry 450 lb Bengal tiger. But that’s what the director of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” has done with “The Life of Pi”, an adaptation of the hard-to-adapt book by Yann Martel. Here’s your first look at the 3D movie, featuring star Suraj Sharma and his pet tiger. The tiger, along with all the animals in the movie, are supposed to be CG. Yes, that’s a CG tiger right there. I guess it would be kind of hard to make a real tiger “act” on a boat. He might get, you know, frustrated, and you probably don’t want a 450 lb Bengal tiger getting “frustrated” around you. It co-stars Tobey Maguire, Gérard Depardieu, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Adil Hussain, and Ayush Tandon. The story of »

First Look: Newcomer Suraj Sharma & His Bengal Tiger In Ang Lee's 'Life Of Pi'

25 April 2012 5:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Adapting best-selling novels is never an easy job and, in the case of Ang Lee and "Life Of Pi," it's a task made only more difficult by the off-beat tale centering on the shipwrecked son of an Indian zookeeper who's stuck on a lifeboat with a 450-pound bengal tiger in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Perhaps that's why names like Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Alfonso Cuaron and M. Night Shyamalan have come and gone in their attempts to adapt Yann Martel's popular novel but, with Lee diving head first into the project in 3D no less, we now have our first look at the film featuring newcomer Suraj Sharma as Pi and his sizable, striped friend in their lifeboat.

Lee had previously implied that he would be using CGI animals and we have to say, it looks impressively real. Either way, when things reach shore in the David Magee ("Finding Neverland") script, »
