We're gathering reviews and trailers for films screening in this year's edition of Venice Days. While we have trailers or clips for nearly every film lined up, so far these first few days have seen reviews come in for Julie Delpy's Lolo, Matias Bize’s The Memory of Water, Piotr Chrzan’s Klezmer, Dani de la Torre’s Retribution, Celia Rowlson Hall’s Ma. You can also watch Alice Rohrwacher's De Djess in its entirety, while the teaser for Agnès Varda's Les 3 Boutons looks delightfully promising. » - David Hudson »

Daily | Venice + Toronto 2015 | Julie Delpy’s Lolo

19 hours ago | Keyframe | See recent Keyframe news »

The first round of reviews for Julie Delpy's Lolo, starring herself, Dany Boon, Vincent Lacoste and Karin Viard, are rather mixed. For the Hollywood Reporter's Boyd van Hoeij, it's her "most winningly mainstream concoction yet," but for Variety's Andrew Barker, "what could have been a broad yet sweetly believable comic meditation on cross-cultural middle-aged romance" is brought down "with flatly staged, sometimes downright infantile low-brow antics." We've got the trailer and we'll carry on collecting reviews as Lolo, which has premiered at Venice Days, rolls on to Toronto. » - David Hudson »

Venice: Julie Delpy's 'Lolo' Offers Crowd-Pleasing Romcom with a Psychotic Twist (Review)

3 September 2015 12:32 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

For a number of years now Julie Delpy has been perfecting her caustically comic voice by playing on cultural differences between the French and Americans – as co-writer and star of “Before Sunrise” and “Before Midnight,” and as writer, director and star of “2 Days in Paris” and “2 Days in New York.” So it’s with great interest that one sees her directing a romantic comedy wholly in a Gallic milieu. The result is as brazen and frequently hilarious as we’ve come to expect from her, if also less sophisticated, as though Delpy is acknowledging – or succumbing to – the fact that the French do tend to prefer their comedy in broader strokes. Delpy is Violette, a Parisian art director and single parent on a spa holiday in Biarritz with best friend Ariane (Karin Viard), who is encouraging her dour companion to “get your chimney swept.” Along comes jug-eared, geeky but romantic »

Venice Film Review: ‘Lolo’

2 September 2015 2:39 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In “Lolo,” Julie Delpy’s sixth and most brazenly commercial effort as a writer-director, the helmer plays an uptight Parisian sophisticate drawn into a long-term love affair with an earnest provincial rube (Dany Boon), while her teenage son, Lolo (Vincent Lacoste), does everything he can to spoil the relationship. His character serves the same function within the film as well, taking what could have been a broad yet sweetly believable comic meditation on cross-cultural middle-aged romance, and dragging it down with flatly staged, sometimes downright infantile low-brow antics. Well cast and funny just often enough to recommend, the film has every shot at snaring a decent audience in France, though international markets will be tough to crack.

Nearing the end of a long holiday in Biarritz, flustery fortysomething fashion exec Violette (Delpy) has yet to fully relax. Deciding that a one-night stand is just what she needs, she joins up with tart-tongued best friend, »

Two high-profile Scandinavian film execs — Jakob Abrahamsson (pictured) and C.G. Anderson — have bought back Scandinavian film distribution company NonStop Entertainment from Turner Broadcasting.

Abrahamsson previously served as a distribution and acquisition manager at NonStop and will now become the new CEO of the company. Abrahamsson has worked at the company since 2000.

”The time with Turner has been valuable and during the time we’ve had some of our biggest successes. We appreciate their work in making this company more effective and we look forward to going independent as a company again,” says Jakob Abrahamsson.

In 2010 Turner acquired NonStop Entertainment, part of the Millennium Media Group, from Mmg founder Ignas Scheynius, who left the company a few years later. Anderson served as head of Mmg.

Ian McDonough, CEO of Turner Broadcasting Northern Europe, commented: “We leave NonStop Entertainment in very good shape, and we will continue working with Turner’s main key sections. »

UK Blu-ray for Avengers: Age of Ultron causes “sexist controversy”

10 August 2015 1:03 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

When Avengers Assemble (or just The Avengers as its known elsewhere) was released in the UK a few years ago, there was a huge uproar that it didn’t contain the commentary track from director Joss Whedon. Well, the UK release of its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron has stirred up even more controversy.

The special edition covers, released yesterday, show Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Hulk, but not female characters Scarlet Witch or Black Widow. It also doesn’t contain Hawkeye, Quicksilver or Vision. The regular edition cover has the poster, which has Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury, but still no sign of Scarlet Witch.
