Ratings spike for short timers

28 April 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

As the end of the television season draws near, viewers are clearly making a point to tune in for a last look at a handful of veteran primetime series in their waning weeks on the air. NBC's Friends hit its highest marks since January with its third-to-last episode last week, which also marked the first fresh episode of Friends since Feb. 26. NBC's Frasier notched a three-month high last week -- and nearly doubled its weak Happy Family lead-in -- as its May 13 swan-song episode approaches. ABC's The Practice delivered its highest adults 18-49 demo rating since November last week as David E. Kelley's legal drama prepares to morph next season into a spinoff led by James Spader and Rebecca De Mornay. Even ABC's NYPD Blue seems to have gotten a ratings bounce ever since ABC announced that the coming 2004-05 season would be its last. For the week, NBC was No. 1 in adults 18-49 (4.1/12), followed by Fox (3.8/11), CBS (3.2/9) and ABC (2.6/8). The WB Network had an up week, averaging a 1.6/5 in its target demo of adults 18-34, compared with a 1.0/3 for UPN. »

Director-writer-producer Bill D'Elia, a longtime David E. Kelley collaborator, has been tapped as executive producer/showrunner of Kelley's new legal series for ABC, a lighter-hearted offspring of The Practice. The new series, targeted for fall, centers on The Practice's Alan Shore (James Spader), who joins Crane, Poole & Schmidt, the law firm that represented him in his wrongful-termination lawsuit against Young, Frutt & Berluti. In addition to Spader, the new show will star Rhona Mitra, who plays Tara Wilson on the Emmy-winning The Practice, with recurring guest stars William Shatner and Rebecca De Mornay also expected to make the transition. »

Duff prefers 'Blonde' role for Miramax

5 February 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Hilary Duff has committed to star in Miramax Films' comedy Outward Blonde, the company confirmed. The project, sold to the mini-major as a pitch by Kayla Alpert in June 2000, centers on a materialistic New York girl who gets sent on an Outward Bound program after she fails gym class. Blonde is out to directors. Francesca Silvestri of Moxie Pictures is producing for Miramax along with Lizzie Friedman. Duff's reps could not be reached for comment on the project. Duff is in front of the cameras on The Heart of Summer, opposite Rita Wilson, John Corbett and Rebecca De Mornay for New Line Cinema and FilmEngine. She next stars in A Cinderella Story for Warner Bros. Pictures and is developing a sitcom for CBS, marking her first post-Lizzie McGuire series effort. And while her feature film and TV career is going well, Duff has found success offscreen as well. Her debut music album, Metamorphosis, has sold north of 2 million copies. She is repped by Curtis Talent Management and attorney Michael Fuller at Barnes, Morris, Klein, Mark & Yorn. »
