From Academy Award®--winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes "John Carter"—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. The screenplay was written by Andrew Stanton, Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon. John Carter will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray June 5th. »

John Carter is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on June 5, and I hope it finds a second life in home release. I don't know what it would take to justify a sequel, but for the sake of ambitious, lush science fiction like this, it would be unfortunate if the lasting legacy was that of a flop. The expansive universe, as designed by Edgar Rice Borroughs, is really built for serialization. We have seen this potential realized on screen in the many properties that were inspired by John Carter of Mars. Jon Favreau points to Star Wars and Superman as two indelible franchises that benefit from the Mars mythos in the featurette, "Influence of John Carter," which will appear on the Blu-ray. We were provided a one-minute clip from the featurette, with supporting remarks by Willem Dafoe (the voice of Tars Tarkas in the movie), and we'd like to share it with you after the jump. »

Nicol Williamson as Merlin in Excalibur (John Boorman, 1981, UK):
Turning in by far the best acting in Boorman’s epic, Williamson sets the bar for all other interpretations of the Merlin character. Best known as an acclaimed stage actor with a history of incredibly unprofessional behavior, this is Williamson’s most memorable film role and will have you chanting the “charm of making” in no time.
Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty in Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982, USA):
As an android seeking to prolong his short life, Hauer’s unique screen presence is perfectly utilized in director Scott’s atmospheric science fiction milestone. Hauer brings a sort of “alien” quality to the character Roy Batty and really makes this role a truly superior piece of casting.
Other notable Rutger Hauer performances: Nighthawks (Bruce Malmuth, 1981, USA), The Hitcher (Robert Harmon, 1986, USA).

The drama Out of the Furnace seems like a hot commodity right now. It sports a stellar cast that includes Christian Bale and Casey Affleck in the lead roles, and Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe and Woody Harrelson in the supporting cast, as well as backing from celebrity production companies like Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Ridely Scott’s Scott Free. The film is currently being shot in western Pa, and on Sunday, executive producer Jeff Waxman, producer/production coordinator Julie Hartley, and various crew members spoke at a Pa Film Industry Association meeting in Pittsburgh, giving some insight to the project. We were there and one can see details below.
During the talk, Waxman repeatedly compared the film to The Fighter, which also featured Bale in an Oscar-winning performance. In past reports, Furnace was said to have a “No Country For Old Men vibe,” so this new development changes some expectations. »

With the upcoming release of the creepy Hammer film The Woman in Black on DVD May 22nd, we thought it would be a good time to look back at some of our favorite frightening women from horror films of the past. Believe me; these aren't your average scream queens. These women bite back...hard!
To prime the proverbial pump, we have some honorable mentions for those who just missed the list. Who wasn't creeped out by Cécile De France in Haute Tension (High Tension) or Isabelle Fuhrman in Orphan. I remember looking through my fingers at the woman-thing at the end of [Rec], and Rebecca De Mornay was simply cold-blooded in The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Rie Ino'o gave us an iconic image in Ring, which Daveigh Chase duplicated in the American remake. And Lina Leandersson was eerie as Ellie in Lat den ratte komma in (Let the Right One In). Hell, »

Springtime brings with it a slew of new television shows. Shows that, if they're lucky enough to strike a chord with viewers, will land a spot on the network fall schedules. One sitcom that has started out of the gate strong is ABC's Don't Trust The B**** In Apartment 23. Set in New York, City, the series, created by Nahnatchka Khan (Family Guy), puts together a naive Indiana transplant named June (Dreama Walker), who ends up being roommates with wild child Chloe (Krysten Ritter, aka 'the B****"). The colorful Chloe also happens to be BFFs with actor James Van Der Beek.
Van Der Beek is best known for his title role in the teen drama Dawson's Creek, and on this show he plays an exaggerated, egocentric version of himself. This fictional Van Der Beek also has a devoted gay assistant. Enter Luther, played by Ray Ford, »

The Martin Scorsese who put out The Last Temptation of Christ is not the Martin Scorsese we know today. He had yet to make Goodfellas, and though Raging Bull netted Robert De Niro an Oscar, Scorsese spent much of the 1980’s in the wilderness, making niche films which were considered disappointments, only to secure financing through directing a for-hire hit movie (The Color of Money). Christ was most notable for the controversy it engendered, as it was protested by a number of religious groups, which kept it out of most big chain theaters. Vanya of 42nd Street is a project that transcends its set-up, and acts as a follow-up to Louis Malle’s My Dinner with Andre. It reunited Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn with a cast (that includes Julianne Moore) that performed Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya on the fly for years. Both have come out from Criterion on Blu-ray, »

Here's a small casting update on Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper's follow-up film, Out of the Furnace. According to Deadline, Willem Dafoe has joined the stellar A-list cast in an unspecified role. The revenge thriller stars Christian Bale as a former criminal who, upon his release from prison, must decide whether to get revenge for his brother's (Casey Affleck) murder or to marry his girl (Zoe Saldana). Guess which one he chooses? Woody Harrelson has already locked down the role of the villainous Mr. DeGroat, the man responsible for the gambling racket that Affleck gets caught up in. Sounds awesome to me. More below! Dafoe is just the latest in a long line of great actors to join this project, including Sam Shepard as the brothers' uncle and Forest Whitaker as the town sheriff. But since Harrelson is already playing the villain, who will Dafoe be portraying? Dafoe has »

Talk about having an impressive ensemble. “Crazy Heart” helmer Scott Cooper has already lined up a remarkable array of players for "Out of the Furnace," his first directorial effort since his breakout hit landed actor Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar. The Black List-approved script is set in Indiana in 1986 and follows Slim (Christian Bale), recently released from prison, who intends to marry his girlfriend (Zoe Saldana) but instead is drawn into a quest for revenge when his brother (Casey Affleck) is murdered after getting involved in the gambling racket. This supposedly “No Country For Old Men”-like picture also has Sam Shepard, Woody Harrelson and Forest Whitaker, and has now added one more exceptional thespian to the mix.
Willem Dafoe, a talent who requires no introduction, is joining the cast in this gritty tale based on a script initially by Brad Inglesby that was titled “The Low Dwellers. »
