Choose The 1998 Academy Award Winners!

23 December 2010 6:30 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

I love that a heated discussion over Titanic’s infamous Oscar sweep of 1998 has already begun over at Laurent’s excellent retrospective. I guess it’s just the nature of this particular film. There is something about Titanic that hits a raw nerve in people and they feel a need to defend/criticize it so passionately.

As it happens, I fall in the ‘unconditional love’ category and I’m not afraid to admit it. To this day I have a passion for Titanic, a film that so perfectly matches what a glorious, spellbinding, big spectacle romance against an historic backdrop should be, and those films are so rare, especially when they are made with such precise and meticulous detail from James Cameron.

We shouldn’t be embarrassed over how much we loved Titanic in the 90′s. We should embrace it. So as our third ‘Choose The Winners’ article, we are »

Retrospective: Oscars 1998

23 December 2010 8:21 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Alfred Hitchcock famously quipped that the three things you need to make a good film are a “good script, a good script and a good script.” In February 1998 however the Academy voters decided to ignore these pearls of wisdom, much like they ignored the achievements of Hitchcock himself, when they chose to reward Titanic with a Best Picture win despite the film lacking a screenplay nomination.

This was the first time this had transpired in over thirty years and pretty much confirmed the idea that Titanic was being praised as a spectacle even though it has been proven time and time again that any spectacle without the benefit of good storytelling is only impressive until the next spectacle comes along. L.A. Confidential on the other hand which is as fresh and watachable in 2010 as it was thirteen years ago compliments the quote that “good storytelling never goes out of fashion. »

Showtime Previews First 20 Minutes of "Shameless" and It's Pretty Gay

13 December 2010 9:19 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

On Sunday night, Showtime previewed the first twenty minutes of their remake of the UK drama Shameless which the network debuts next month. Alas, I can't post it here because of nudity and language, but the good news is that as you can see from the promo pic above, it looks like the show is making no bones about the fact that Ian (Cameron Monaghan) is gay.

We see Ian several times in the first twenty minutes, including when his brother finds out Ian's been hiding the fact he's gay from him. But we see first see Ian partying as his dad, Frank (William H. Macy) describes each of his kids in a voiceover. About Ian he says, "Industrious, conscientious, ambitious, incredible work ethic. Don't have a clue where he got that from. Wants to be a paratrooper and know how to disembowel an enemy with a roll of dimes and an old gym sock. »

Based on the UK series, Shameless, from John Wells and Paul Abbott, stars William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum. Exclusive: Early TV Review of Showtime's New 'Shameless'

Exclusive Review Showtime has announced it will preview the first 20 minutes of its highly anticipated new drama series "Shameless" following the season 5 finale of "Dexter" -- but Deal Central has seen a rough cut of the pilot that was dated March 8, 2010, and offers this exclusive review. Mars Needs Moms Trailer

25 November 2010 6:08 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I have to admit, my initial thought was that this looks like just another generic CG animated movie, but after watching the first trailer for Mars Needs Moms I'm actually somewhat interested. The story revolves around a 9-year-old kid named Milo who must head to outer space to rescue his mother, who has been kidnapped by Martians. Apparently they have a shortage of motherly types on Mars to raise their own children, so they've been stealing them from Earth. Seth Green voices Milo (it's actually kind of creepy to hear him do a little kid's voice), and the cast also includes Dan Fogler (doing his best Jack Black impression), and Joan Cusack. The animation is being handled by Robert Zemeckis' studio ImageMovers Digital, and it will be their final film before the studio is shut down. As you can see from the trailer, it is using the same performance »

You Know, For Kids: Trailers For 'Mars Needs Moms' & 'Hop'

We have to admit, if it isn't Pixar (or maybe DreamWorks), we sort of don't pay attention to animated films, but in the past couple of days trailers have landed for "Mars Needs Moms" and "Hop" which might be of interest for parents looking to entertain their kids next spring. First up, "Mars Needs Moms" is the latest from Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers shingle which explains the dead-eye CGI thing that's going on. First Trailer for Mars Needs Moms

24 November 2010 6:50 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Disney has released the first trailer for its upcoming Mars Needs Moms, based on the book by Bloom County author and illustrator Berkeley Breathed. It follows a young boy (voiced by Seth Green) who stows away on a space ship after his mom (Joan Cusack) is abducted. The boy gets help from the tech-savvy, underground earthman "Gribble" (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl "Ki" (Elisabeth Harnois).

The animation in the trailer doesn't look much like Breathed's original artwork, instead looking more like the (often creepy) motion-captured animation of The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol. This comes as no surprise — the director of those movies, Robert Zemeckis, is producing. Simon Wells (Balto) directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Wendy Wells.

‘Mars Needs Moms’ starring Seth Green and Joan Cusack – trailer review

Mars Needs Moms

Directed by: Simon Wells

Starring: Seth Green, Joan Cusack, Dan Fogler

Rating: Not Rated

Release Date: March 11, 2011

Trailer Score: 4/10

My Thoughts: Another film with dead-eyed characters from the company that brought you The Polar Express and Disney’s A Christmas Carol.  They don’t look as horrifying but they’re still pretty creepy.  A boy’s mother is abducted and taken to Mars and he goes to save her?  Find her?  It’s unclear.  I really like Green, he voices the boy and sounds like a kid though he’s definitely not one anymore.  But the plot seems reminiscent of the Teri Garr/Jon Lovitz classic Mom and Dad Save the World. The jokes seem pretty clunky too.  Why go through the labor and expense of putting together a computer animated film if you’re not going to make a good script?  The aliens looked kind of cool though, »

Trailer: Mars Needs Moms

23 November 2010 12:36 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The first full-length trailer for Disney's motion captured, CG animated toon Mars Needs Moms is out. Directed by Simon Wells (who remade The Time Machine and is the real-life great-grandson of H.G. Wells), the movie centers on a young boy named Milo who gains a greater respect for his hard-working mother and her attempt to make Milo clean-up his messes. It turns out that the red planet is in dire need of domestic human housewomen who have experience with raising children because the Martian kids need some mommy love.

Joan Cusack (Jesse from the Toy Story films) provides the voice of Milo's mom while Seth Green (Robot Chicken) is Milo and Dan Fogler (Kung Fu Panda) is Gribbler, the spaceman that lends Milo a helping hand. If it's mo-cap animation, naturally you'd expect Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express, Grendel, Monster House) to be a producer on the movie.

Trailer: “Mars Needs Moms”

23 November 2010 12:18 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Disney has released the first trailer and some new images for their upcoming animated film Mars Needs Moms, and it looks bloody awful. I’m not a fan of animated features that are overly concerned with aping real life instead of creating its own universe. Call me old fashioned but I prefer the old school animation of Disney, hand drawn and not designed on a computer. It also doesn’t help that the trailer is dull, riffing on typical pop culture jokes and the usual Star Wars reference with an incredibly horrible pop tune blasting in the background. This seems like a failed and lifeless experiment in which everything goes wrong.

Official synopsis
