Crush of the week: Gabrielle Union

11 April 2015 5:16 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

‘Union is a classic Cool Girl, the type that appeals to men and women: she’s fun and sporty, and beautiful in that girl-next-door way; she also looks like she means business’

1999 was a magical year for teen movies: it was when 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That were released. These two films have one actor in common, Gabrielle Union, and she fills her second-fiddle position with aplomb. Her screen time is limited to serving the arcs of the main players (Julia Stiles, Rachael Leigh Cook), but you still notice her: as Chastity in 10 Things, she asks the great question, “Can you ever just be whelmed?”. She was 26 at the time, playing 17.

Union, now 42, began her showbiz life as a model. This led to small TV roles, then movies, supplemented with appearances in Friends, ER and Ugly Betty. She’s a classic Cool Girl, the type »

‘She’s All That’ Again?

9 April 2015 12:28 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

If you are of a certain age (and Thn is definitely of a certain age), five years before teen movie history was made by Mean Girls, a geeky girl’s transformation from ugly to beautiful in ninety minutes was the video you watched at every sleepover possible. Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) was the ultimate big screen heartthrob – he was the most popular boy in school And he had a thoughtful side to boot, brought out by soon-to-be-beautiful Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook). The storyline had universal appeal, the cast was full of future stars (seriously, check out IMDb for the full list but Paul Walker, Matthew Lillard, Anna Paquin, Kieran Culkin, Gabrielle Union…),  the soundtrack instantly memorable and the script witty and on point.

Fast forward to 2015 and the death of original filmmaking ideas means that production company Miramax, who released the original in 1999, are teaming up with The »

She's All That Star Rachael Leigh Cook Welcomes Her Second Child

8 April 2015 4:33 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Rachael Leigh Cook has given birth to a baby boy! E! confirms that the actress and her husband, Daniel Gillies, welcomed the little one on Saturday and named him Theodore Vigo Sullivan Gillies. It's the second child for the couple, who are already parents to 1-year old daughter Charlotte. Rachael revealed the news of her pregnancy back in January; she was one of four of our favorite '90s stars to announce that they were expecting their second children, along with Tamera Mowry, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Tiffani Thiessen. The news of Rachael's son's arrival came on Wednesday, the same day as reports that her most memorable movie, She's All That, is getting a big-screen reboot. Reps from both Miramax and The Weinstein Company later claimed that the remake news is not true. Congratulations to Rachael and Daniel on their new bundle of joy! »

She’s All That Is Getting A Remake

8 April 2015 2:14 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As Hollywood’s raid on the cinematic closets of yesteryear continues, this latest piece of development news shows that at least some things are changing. Most recently, announcements concerning remakes, reboots, sequels and spinoffs have been met by the wild sobs of people who grew up in the eighties.

Now, thanks to that decade having practically been exhausted of its recyclable potential, studios are turning to the nineties. The newest slice of nostalgia in the crosshairs for a do-over is the 1999 teen comedy She’s All That. And is it coincidence that the film itself is about getting a makeover? Probably.

A success at the time of release, She’s All That scored big at the box office with $100 million in receipts. Freddie Prinze Jr., then riding on a huge wave of popularity, starred as the broken-hearted jock Zach, who enters into a wager with his best friend Dean Sampson »

29 Perfect Moments From She's All That That Can Never Be Replicated

8 April 2015 11:46 AM, PDT | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

A rumor that She's All That is being remade emerged on Wednesday, and whether you might be excited about the news or convinced it's a travesty, the fact remains that the original is pure gold. Freddie Prinze Jr. stars as the most popular kid in school who makes a bet with his friend (a young Paul Walker) that he can make the school dork (Rachael Leigh Cook) a prom queen. It's a simple and cruel premise, but the movie is a feel-good romance with plenty of memorable moments. It easily stands out as one of the best teen movies of 1999, and these GIFs are proof that no remake can capture the magic of the original. »

Freddie Prinze Jr. Weighs In On "She's All That" Reboot

8 April 2015 11:30 AM, PDT | TooFab | See recent TooFab news »

One of our favorite '90s teen flicks may be getting a major makeover!   The Wrap reported on Tuesday that the beloved 1999 romantic comedy, "She's All That" is getting a remake -- one that will allegedly be directed by Spike Lee's wife, Tonya Lewis Lee.  The original flick follows the story of a high school jock, Zack Siler, who bets his friends that he can make any girl in the school prom queen material. Zack's friends choose the school's artsy outcast, Laney Boggs, for the wager ... but, Siler ends up actually falling for her in the process.  The original "She's All That" film boasted a pretty impressive cast, too -- Freddie Prinze Jr., Rachael Leigh Cook, Matthew Lillard, Usher, Anna Paquin, Lil' Kim and the late Paul Walker all appeared in the teen dramedy.  The Weinstein Company and Miramax are reportedly developing the reboot, but have yet to comment on The Wrap's report. »

Dear Hollywood: Please Do Not Remake These 13 Cherished High School Movies

8 April 2015 11:16 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Dear Hollywood, First of all we'd like to thank you for a couple of things: The Hemsworth Brothers, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's comedy domination, a television channel that's dedicated only to cooking and the fact that Chris Pratt and Paul Rudd are now action stars. Much obliged. But now we have a bone to pick with you, which when you think about it is kind of a gross saying. Is it like vultures picking at the remains of a carcass? If so, it's a fitting description because every time we read news that you guys are rebooting a cherished film from the past, we die a little inside. For example, apparently a She's All That reboot is coming. Why? Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) is a feminist »

She’s All That Is Getting a Remake Because Even Though You Aren’t 13 Anymore, There Are Still 13-Year-Olds, and They Need to Be Entertained [Updated]

8 April 2015 9:13 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Some would say 1999's She's All That, starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook (back when they were very much all that), already had a sort-of remake with 2001's Not Another Teen Movie. But not according to Hollywood! The Wrap reports that a remake of the Pygmalion-inspired rom-com is in the works, with Kenny Leon directing and Spike Lee's wife producing — which hopefully means we'll see some black actors in lead roles rather than swagless token friends and campus DJs (remember Usher?!). None of this matters, of course, unless the remake can somehow top the original's theme song, Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me." What a gem.Update: BuzzFeed's Emily Orley says The Weinstein Co. and Mirimax have not reached a deal for a She's All That reboot. We can breathe again .. for now. »

She's All That Is Getting a Remake

8 April 2015 8:48 AM, PDT | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

If She's All That was your jam in 1999, you might not be thrilled to hear that a remake is in the works. Miramax is reviving the now-classic teen comedy. Kenny Leon, who is mostly known for TV movies like Lifetime's remake of Steel Magnolias, is attached to direct. Though a cast hasn't been announced, it's probably fair to assume that original stars Rachael Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr. won't return. Paul Walker, Matthew Lillard, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, Usher Raymond, Lil' Kim, and Gabrielle Union also starred in the first film. See why this is a classic? Stay tuned for more information. Update: Some outlets are reporting that the remake news is just a rumor. »

She’S All That Remake in the Works at The Weinstein Company

8 April 2015 8:26 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

My initial reaction to the She’s All That remake news was something along the lines of, ‘What?! Why would anyone want to remake that of all films?’ But, on second thought, it could be fun to see The Weinstein Company and Miramax put a fresh spin on the story and tailor it to a modern audience. In case you’re not a 90s kid or missed out on this unforgettable high school classic for whatever reason, the original stars Rachel Leigh Cook as Laney Boggs, a “scary and inaccessible" loner who wears glasses and - gasp! - overalls. When the big man on campus, Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.), insists that he can make any girl prom queen, his buddy Dean (Paul Walker) challenges him to do just that with Laney Boggs in six weeks. 'She's All That' Remake Coming from Spike Lee's Wife

8 April 2015 7:50 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

She's All That helped usher in a new era of teen movies, arriving at the tail end of the 90s and preceding American Pie by a couple of months. The film that originally starred Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook is getting the remake it deserves, as a new twist on the tale gears up at the Weinstein Company. Spike Lee's wife Tonya Lewis Lee will produce with acclaimed stage director Kenny Leon directing. It is not stated in the initial report, but it is expected that the main cast will be African-American. The Wrap calls it 'diverse' casting.

The Weinstein Company and Miramax released the original She's All That in January of 1999 after a fairly long drought of teen movies, kicking the popular 80s genre back into gear. The film grossed more than $100 million worldwide. Represenatives at Weinstein Co. did not immediately comment on this new take on the romantic comedy, »

Before ‘Fast and Furious,’ Paul Walker Blew Up Freddie Prinze, Jr.’s Spot in ‘She’s All That’

We’re one week away from the release of Furious 7, the latest installment in the blockbuster franchise, and Paul Walker‘s final film. Walker has been an integral part of the series since its inception in 2001 and his co-stars have been sharing memories of him during the film’s press tour. But before Furious became a surprise success, he was the king of teen flicks (starring in She’s All That, Varsity Blues, The Skulls) and a foil to Freddie Prinze, Jr.

The Duff – The Review

20 February 2015 6:01 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

I’m at a demographic disadvantage regarding The Duff, being neither an adolescent girl nor someone who enjoys comedies that aren’t funny. Based on the ads, you might expect this new teen clique comedy to have some bite – a Mean Girls for a new generation. Duff is an acronym for ‘Designated Ugly Fat Friend’, someone that more attractive girls let hang around with them for contrast – a “gatekeeper to better-looking friends” – which gives it about the most mean-spirited movie title of late. The title role is played by Mae Whitman, who is short, has distracting eyebrows, and is too old for the role, but she’s neither fat nor ugly, not anymore so than Audrey Hepburn was street trash because her face was dirty in My Fair Lady or Rachel Leigh Cook couldn’t get noticed because she wore glasses in She’S All That.
