‘The Great Wall’: Why The Matt Damon Whitewashing Is No Big Deal In China

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It seems reasonable to expect that a movie called “The Great Wall,” billed as the biggest production in China’s filmmaking history, would feature Chinese actors. Instead, when Universal and Legendary released the trailer for Zhang Yimou’s film, the first face viewers saw was that of the decidedly white Matt Damon, fighting monsters atop the Middle Kingdom’s most famous monument.

In America, it was a call to arms in the battle against whitewashing, that curious tendency to insert Caucasian faces where history tells us there were none. “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world,” wrote comedian and “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu in a lengthy, impassioned statement posted to Twitter. “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon.”

China had another take. There, the prevailing sentiment over the trespass on their national identity might best be described as a Whatevs. »

Movie Review: Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville battle the ravages of age in Skiptrace

18 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

“You’re no spring chicken,” says an American gambler to his Chinese friend midway through the East-West action extravaganza Skiptrace. It’s a put-down that’s meant less for the character than the guy playing him. Since Jackie Chan has been kidding his age on screen for at least a decade now, the joke hardly feels fresh, but as there’s an inherent fascination in watching idols age, this otherwise mediocre film has a certain elegiac power. It opens like a parody (or maybe a rip-off) of any number of Hong Kong policiers, with Chan’s upstanding Bennie watching his partner die during a drug raid gone wrong; as the film goes on, he’ll gain a new sidekick in the form of Connor Watts (Johnny Knoxville), a skeezy gambler who’s decamped to China after getting exiled from homegrown casinos, and whose path crosses with the super cop’s »

Interview: ‘Skiptrace’ Director Renny Harlin on Working With Jackie Chan and Chinese vs. American Filmmaking

29 August 2016 7:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Many of us grew up watching Renny Harlin’s action movies like Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. It would be several more years before Jackie Chan was properly introduced to America with the U.S. release of Rumble in the Bronx. The two represent quite different approaches to action, with Harlin embodying the […]

A History Of Violence: Jackie Chan perfects his goofy, amazing, insanely dangerous style

25 August 2016 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

With A History Of Violence, Tom Breihan picks the most important action movie of every year, starting with the genre’s birth and moving right up to whatever Vin Diesel’s doing this very minute.

Project A (1983)

There’s a scene early in the 1983 pirate caper Project A that pretty perfectly sums up Jackie Chan’s entire filmmaking style. The first of the movie’s many big, insane set pieces is a wild bar fight between Hong Kong’s police and Coast Guard. (For reasons the movie never really adequately explains, they completely fucking hate each other.) It’s a hectic, busy scene, with bodies and bottles and pieces of furniture flying in all directions—the sort of scene where the music starts when a combatant gets his head slammed into a record player. Chan, a sailor, and Yuen Biao, a police officer, smash wooden chairs over each ...

The Rock Named World’s Highest-Paid Actor, Earning Nearly $20 Million More Than Highest-Paid Actress, Jennifer Lawrence

25 August 2016 2:55 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tops Forbes’ list of the highest-paid actors in the world this year, bringing in nearly $65 million over the past year. His work on the “Fast and Furious” franchise and “San Andreas” helped him dethroned Robert Downey, Jr., who had held the title for three consecutive years.

Jennifer Lawrence tops the list of highest-paid actresses, with a total of $46 million — nearly $20 million less than The Rock. (She comes in sixth overall, behind Jackie Chan, Matt Damon, Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp.) For all the attention that Hollywood’s pay disparity has received in recent months and years, little appears to have changed. Full list below:

25 August 2016 1:05 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

In case you didn’t feel poor enough already, Forbes has gone and done their usual ranking of the highest paid actors in the world. At the top this year are two somewhat surprising names, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jennifer Lawrence taking the top of the male and female lists respectively.

According to Forbes, Johnson tops out the list with a $64.5 million pay check, coming out several million ahead of the runner-up Jackie Chan, who only – ahem – brings in $61 million with films in China. Matt Damon came in third due to The Martian (he made $55 million this year), while Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp are just really slumming it with $53 and $48 million respectively.

Over with the ladies, Jennifer Lawrence made $46 million, given The Hunger Games finale, and the upcoming Passengers. Melissa McCarthy is right behind her with $33 million, while Scarlett Johansson lags behind on a scant $25 million. Are you feeling poor yet? »

Dwayne Johnson Is The Highest Paid Actor Of 2016

25 August 2016 12:41 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Who says hard work doesn't pay off?

For the past year or two, it seems like every other article covers some endeavor of Dwayne Johnson or another. More than any other actor, this guy seems adamant about elbowing his way into just about any and every franchise under the sun.

Fast & Furious, San Andreas, Shazam!, Jumanji, Journey, Baywatch, Doc Savage, Rampage --and those are but a few franchises he's a part of, or will be a part of very soon. It's like the only movie that guy isn't in is Jem and the Holograms (no, wait, he was in that, too). If you follow him on Instagram, it's very evident that he's a hard-working dude, and 2016 seems to be a year that heavily reflects that fact.

According to Forbes, Johnson has secured a $64.5 million payday, which not only doubles his earnings from 2015, but it locks him down as the highest »

Dwayne Johnson is rocking Forbes‘ highest-paid actor list.

Johnson commanded $64.5 million between June 2015 and June 2016, more than doubling his earnings from the previous year and bumping Robert Downey Jr. from the top of the list, where he was perched for three consecutive years. Johnson ranked No. 11 last year with around $31 million.

Indie Martial Arts Crime Drama, Black Scar Blues, Lands Its First Hard-Hitting New Trailer

When you look at independent martial arts cinema, you're looking at a hot bed full of potential and talent, and Leesburg-based Rising Tiger Films are no exception. Their latest offering, Black Scar Blues, comes after a five-year evolution following their humble beginnings as an online platform shared with other independent filmmakers bearing a similar love for martial arts movies and all things Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen. Thus, it is Black Scar Blues which has taken Rising Tiger's own Leroy Nguyen and Edmond Shum on the road in the last several years through the film festival circuit and onto fruitful terrain for a possible feature-length release. And with Circus Road Films stepping in on that effort followed by additional production work and other hurdles, Rising...

Newswire: Dwayne Johnson claims the title of world’s highest-paid actor

25 August 2016 7:34 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Take that, Vin Diesel (we guess): Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, currently in a ridiculous feud with his Fast franchise co-star, has been deemed the world’s highest-paid actor by Forbes, raking in $64.5 million in 2016. This, according to Forbes, is thanks to his paydays for Central Intelligence and the upcoming Fast 8 and Baywatch. So it’s good to be muscular and beautiful and a seemingly jolly guy when not pissed off about Ballers-related insults. Diesel, meanwhile, is number seven on the list. Must suck to be a “candy ass”.)

Johnson takes over the title from Robert Downey Jr., who is now in eighth place, tied with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. Downey apparently just didn’t have as much Marvel cash rolling in this year. Coming in second is Jackie Chan, due primarily to his work in China. According to Forbes, “as a producer/investor and ...

Jackie Chan's Police Story Series 1985 - 2013

Recently I have been going through my old Hong Kong movie catalogue and have re-watched a number of classics and not so classics. With this I decided to recheck one of Jackie Chan’s most popular series of films, The Police Story series, which began back in 1985, with the latest instalment only being a few years ago in 2013. Police Story – 1985 Jackie Chan had previously tried to make it in Hollywood with Battle Creek Brawl (1980), The Cannonball Run (1981) and its sequel Cannonball Run 2 (1984), none of which used him to his best potential. In 1985 Jackie Chan tried once more to break the Hollywood market. His attempt at this turned out to be James GlickenhausThe Protector (1985). The film...

China Box Office: ‘Line Walker’ Leads in Crowded Field

14 August 2016 6:56 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Line Walker,” a big screen adaptation of a Hong Kong TV detective series, became the fifth Chinese language movie in six weeks to head the box office in China. Its modest score and the mediocre per screen averages suggest that nothing on offer currently boasts a ‘must see’ factor.

Produced by Shaw Brothers, Tvb, Media Asia and Chinese partners, the film opened on Thursday (Aug 11), a day ahead of a chasing pack of other films opening on Friday. That meant it ate into the the screens of previous winner “Time Raiders” and was able to bank $8.56 million ahead of the Friday to Sunday weekend. It went on to win all three subsequent days scoring 26.9 million over the weekend and $35.8 million after four days.

Second placed film was romance “Love O2O” starring Angelababy and Jing Boran (also in ‘Time Raiders”.) It managed 118.1 million in three days.
