Review: Aliens: 30th Anniversary Edition

16 September 2016 10:26 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

The 1980s was perhaps the first decade where sequels were crowding the theater screens and most were justifiably vilified by critics and fans alike for being little more than a retread of the original. That changed when director James Cameron, fresh off a little indie production The Terminator, was tasked with a sequel to 1979’s surprise hit, Alien.

The Hollywood executive merry-go-round delayed the sequel by several years, although that allowed Cameron to hone his ideas with producer/wife Gale Anne Hurd. He envisioned a story where the humans were akin to the Americans during Viet Nam, strangers seriously outnumbered in a strange land. After insisting the film star Sigourney Weaver, who was in a contract dispute with 20th Century-Fox, all the pieces came together.

When the movie opened in 1986, it set a new higher standard for what a sequel should be, which was expanding upon the characters and universe seen in the first film. »

Aliens: 30th Anniversary Edition

Written and Directed by James Cameron.

Starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Carrie Henn, Bill Paxton, William Hope, Ricco Ross, Al Matthews, Jenette Goldstein.

Synopsis:

Aliens sees its forty-second release on home video (I’m only exaggerating a little) with this edition, which is a repackage of the Blu-ray movie disc from Alien Anthology with some collectibles tossed in. You also get codes for a digital copy of the theatrical version of the movie and a new featurette, The Inspiration of Aliens.

How many times have you bought the Alien movies on home media? I had the first two on VHS way back when (yes, pan-and-scan, but to be fair, letterboxed VHS movies weren’t easy to find), and of course I scored Alien Quadrilogy several years ago. I later picked up Alien Anthology on Blu-ray. I know, I’m probably a »

Neill Blomkamp teases "new", non-Alien 5 project

9 September 2016 1:49 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Ryan Lambie Sep 9, 2016

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp reveals he's "working on new things" with a teasing image posted online...

Ah, studio politics. Were it not for a little film called Alien: Covenant, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp would more than likely be working on Alien 5, his proposed sequel to Aliens which would have reunited Ripley, Newt and Hicks for the first time since James Cameron's 1986 classic.

With Ridley Scott currently filming his Alien prequel (and Prometheus sequel) Alien: Covenant, however, the decision was made to put Alien 5 on hold. So while Aliens stars Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn are both enthusiastic about reprising their roles, it will likely be several years before Blomkamp's plans finally come to fruition.

In the meantime, Blomkamp's moving onto other things. We know this because he recently took to Instagram to share a particularly freaky-looking piece of effects work: the head and shoulders »

Alien 5 Is Happening Says Michael Biehn

1 August 2016 4:35 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Ridley Scott recently wrapped production on Alien: Covenant, which will be the first proper Aliens movie we have had in a very long time. Yes, Prometheus was a prequel to Alien, but it was buried pretty deep back in the lore and was only loosely connected to the franchise. Outside of Scott's new movie, fans are eagerly awaiting any firm updates on the status of Neill Blomkamp's highly anticipated Alien 5. Fox hasn't given any official word on it, but star Michael Biehn seems very confident that the movie is still going to happen.

Biehn of course played the part of Hicks in James Cameron's Aliens, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. Biehn appeared at the panel for the movie that took place during at San Diego Comic-Con, but the subject of Alien 5 didn't get addressed, at least by him. However, the actor recently spoke quite a bit »

Before Ridley Scott decided to put the breaks on the project in order to focus on his upcoming Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant, it looked like Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 was moving full steam ahead at Fox. Sigourney Weaver was on board as Ripley, while Blomkamp debuted a series of concept artwork suggesting that Michael Biehn would also be reprising his role as Hicks from Aliens.

Well, during an interview with Simon Thompson of Forbes ahead of the Aliens 30th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con, Biehn has confirmed that he will be involved in the project – if an when it moves ahead – and he also offered up a few words on the return of Newt.

“[Neill] tweeted out some pictures of me, he said he’s going take the third and fourth film and act like they never happened and things blew up,” said Biehn. “It looked like it was all go and »
