In the world of Flatliners, death is merely the beginning.
That’s a clichéd phrase that is so often tossed around Hollywood’s marketing departments year in, year out, but in Niels Arden Oplev’s long-rumored horror sequel, death is literally the beginning of a new life for five whip-smart medical students attempting to play God.
Headed up by Ellen Page, Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons (The Flash), Flatliners toys with the fine line between life and death, as our group of characters undergoes terrifying near-death experiences in the hope of gaining a new lease of life. Talk about poetic irony. But venturing over to the other side has consequences of its own, and after showcasing its first teaser trailer, Sony has now rolled out a handful of foreboding images that find Ellen Page and the rest of the gang »

Before fame propelled Brad Pitt above the heights of the Hollywood sign, he was an overly polite, amateur actor who was almost passed over for the role of the seducer-meets-robber J.D. in the 1991 film Thelma and Louise. Now, a new book reveals inside details of his sex scene with Thelma (played by Geena Davis) — a scene so “racy” that it kick-started his reputation as a sex symbol and, if left uncut, would have shot the movie’s rating “past R.”

Page plays a medical student who joins four of her classmates — Luna (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”), Nina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons — in post-midnight experiments of stopping their hearts for short periods of time to get first-hand glimpses of the afterlife. The initial forays seem pleasant enough, but the afterlife seemingly bites back with increasingly disturbing images, based on their sins from the past, and begins intruding their everyday lives.
The word “murderer” appears at the bottom of a pool while one character is swimming. Page’s character sees a car tumbling off a rural bridge into a river and cries “I’m going crazy,” and Luna declares, “This experiment needs to end.”

What happens when you intentionally stage a near-death experience? Ptsd and more haunting nightmares than the human brain can possibly handle, that’s what.
That’s the predicament facing five best-in-class medical students in today’s first look trailer for Flatliners, Sony’s thrilling follow-up that’s set to flicker into life this September. Headed up by Ellen Page, Diego Luna (Rogue One), Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons, this long-in-development sequel is coming by way of Niels Arden Oplev, the Danish filmmaker best known for his work on the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series.
That means Oplev is well versed in reworking dark, brooding drama for a modern-day audience, but for all of the talent attached – behind the lens, and in front – today’s two trailers fall flat rather quickly. We begin with Ellen Page’s curious med student pushing the boundaries of life itself, only to emerge radically different. »

The trailer seems to take a more sinister turn than the original after the new medical students are thrilled with the effects of the actual real death experience has on their lives, aided with death-inducing technology that has taken on a 21st-century overhaul. Unfortunate for them something that can’t »

As Scream Factory continues to release pared-down catalogue titles on their now five-year-old label, the brand keeps expanding to include all different kinds of movies. Once known for releasing deluxe special editions of horror fan favorites, the company has diversified over the last half decade and begun releasing new films (as part of their deal with IFC midnight), unknown (and sometimes previously unavailable) cult films, a handful of classics, and even their own in-house productions. This last batch of catalogue titles, the majority of which have been released with only minimum bonus features but new HD scans, continues to broaden the reach of the Scream Factory brand to include a range of titles from secretly successful ’70s sexploitation sci-fi to well-intentioned failures of the 1990s.

When a movie hits big out of the blue, it’s unwritten Hollywood law that the imitators aren’t too far behind. That’s why, after American Pie brought Porky’s-esque sex-tinged (late) teen comedies back to prominence in 1999, the box office was flooded with similar fare for years after. The Blair Witch Project, meanwhile, hit out of nowhere, and found footage horror is only now dying away. The late Wes Craven, meanwhile, wryly noted just how quickly Hollywood had cashed in on the success of 1996’s Scream, when spoof Scary Movie popped out the year after.
Going back to 1992, though, and it was the turn of the erotic thriller to enjoy its resurgence. »
