Baldwin Recommends Ex-Wife Basinger

13 December 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Alec Baldwin remains a huge fan of ex-wife Kim Basinger's acting - despite their bitter bust-up. The Malice star, whose eight-year marriage to the actress crumbled in 2001, has been locked in a battle with his former spouse over his access to their seven-year-old daughter Ireland. He has also been dogged with reports of being an abusive husband to the 9 1/2 Weeks star during their union. But when Baldwin was at the Los Angeles, California, restaurant Katana last week, he showed that he still has an appreciation for Basinger's work. While he was reading the movie listings in the Los Angeles Times, a fellow diner struck up a conversation with the 44-year old star, asking which film he recommended. Baldwin swiftly replied, "I'd go to see 8 Mile. My ex-wife's in it. It's really good." »

Baldwin eyes 'Providence' mob

9 December 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Alec Baldwin is in negotiations to take on his first starring role in several years in the Walt Disney Co. mob project Providence. Baldwin will star opposite Matthew Broderick in the film, which was originally inspired by the true story of a sting operation in Providence, R.I. It revolves around a young filmmaker (Broderick) who is given millions of dollars to make his first movie by a mysterious benefactor (Baldwin) on the condition that he shoot it in Providence. But the filmmaker eventually discovers that his film's producer is an undercover FBI agent. The film was written by Jeff Nathanson, who is making his directorial debut on the project. It is being produced by David Permut through Permut Pictures, Larry Brezner through MBST Entertainment, and David Hoberman through his Disney-based Mandeville Films. Production is being overseen by Disney production exec Jeff Clifford. Baldwin last worked with Disney in last year's The Royal Tenenbaums and has also appeared in the Disney blockbuster Pearl Harbor. He can next be seen in the upcoming Universal Pictures project Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat opposite Mike Myers. Baldwin is repped by CAA. »

Baldwins At War

25 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sparring Hollywood couple Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger are caught in a bitter tug-of-love battle over their daughter Ireland. Court papers from Los Angeles reveal that Baldwin has been forced to attend anger management classes in London, before taking parenting classes on his return to Los Angeles. Baldwin and Basinger's seven-year marriage fell apart in 2001 and have now created a lengthy list of rules governing when they can and cannot see their seven- year-old little girl, who currently lives with her mother. These rules state that Baldwin must pay for a phone line for Ireland so she can speak to him - but only between the hours of 7-8am and 6-6:30pm, while he may only contact his ex-wife in an emergency. While every Friday his blonde wife must send him an email telling him what his daughter has been doing that week, which he will have 48 hours to respond to. Friends of the Pearl Harbor actor claim his wife is making it "as difficult as possible for him to see Ireland." »

Kristin Causing Tension on 'Sex and the City' Set

22 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Brunette beauty Kristin Davis' high-profile love life has been causing tension on the set of hit TV comedy Sex And The City. The 37-year-old actress, who plays prudish art gallery owner Charlotte York in the Home Box Office show, hit the headlines this year thanks to romances with Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum and Liev Schreiber. Kristin's single girl image couldn't be any further from her castmates Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall, all of whom are in stable relationships, while Sarah and Cynthia both have children. An on-set source says, "She was a Manhattan 'It girl' for a while and was seen with Alec at this party and that opening, and it didn't go down well with the other girls." Reports earlier this year always claimed it was Kim who caused the problems, because her castmates disapproved of her using the show to sell her sex book Satisfaction: The Art Of The Female Orgasm. The insider adds, "All four are in one feud or another. And even though it's still in its prime, the show's going to call it a day." Earlier this month pregnant Cynthia, who plays lawyer Miranda Hobbes, said she believed the next series would be the last ever. »

Basinger's Tough Regulations on Baldwin

18 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger has set strict limitations on ex-husband Alec Baldwin's contact with their young daughter. The couple, whose divorce became final last December, were still battling over visitation issues as recently as June. And in August, a Los Angeles superior court set out a monthly visitation schedule for Baldwin and listed precise hours when he can call seven-year-old Ireland daily on a private line to be installed in the girl's room by Basinger. It also instructed Baldwin not to phone other household members and ordered him to "commence anger management therapy." Alexander Peters, a friend and neighbor of Baldwin's in Amagansett, New York, says, "Kim makes it as difficult as possible for him to see his daughter. She just makes his life impossible." »

Hopkins and Baldwin Film Dumped

15 November 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Red Dragon star Anthony Hopkins has one film in the can that will never top the box office charts - because there is not enough money to finish it. The legendary star worked on The Devil And Daniel Webster, a version of Stephen Vincent Benet's supernatural short story, alongside screen beauty Jennifer Love Hewitt and under the direction of Pearl Harbor star Alec Baldwin. However, despite it's a-list credentials, the flick faces a bleak future, after filming wrapped in March 2001. Hopkins says, "They pulled the money out, apparently, so it'll never be seen. The producers have no money to finish it. (Alec's) good, a fine director. He's good to work with, but I don't know if Alec is even interested in (completing) it. We finished filming it a long time ago." »

Basinger's Back Problems "Stem from Fights with Baldwin"

7 October 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Pals of Kim Basinger are blaming the actress's chronic back problems on her ex-husband Alec Baldwin's alleged violence. The L.A. Confidential star, who was married to Baldwin for nine years, underwent surgery in August to remove slipped discs and fuse together damaged vertebrae in her lower back. And according to American tabloid the Star, friends of the 48-year-old beauty claim Baldwin was shockingly violent to her during their union, leading to the injuries. Baldwin has always denied he was ever violent towards Basinger. A source says, "She claims he hit her more than once. And there were many instances when Alec was verbally abusive to her, even in public. She has extremely harsh feelings toward Alec. All the stress of being with him aggravated her back problems and led to the operation. The battles were no secret. Look how often Alec was caught on camera fighting with his wife in public. He put her through an emotional wringer for years. She's still suffering the after effects of their life together." After the acting couple split, pals of Basinger, who stars alongside rapper Eminem in the upcoming flick 8 Mile, say she aggravated her problem by working out at the gym. A friend explains, "This caused her back problem to flare up with a vengeance. She was in so much agony she went to the doctor. That's when she was told that an operation would fix the problem. Otherwise, down the road, she could've ended up in a wheelchair." Basinger is currently undergoing rehabilitation. »

Lange Bashes Bush

Actress Jessica Lange opted against the usual gushing acceptance speech when she picked up an award in Spain last week - so she could give President George W. Bush a vicious tongue-lashing. The Tootsie star picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival. On taking the stage, Lange took her opportunity to add her name to a growing number of celebrities to have taken up Bush-bashing as a hobby, joining Barbra Streisand, Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin. Venting her spleen in the President's direction, she fumed, "I despise him and his entire administration - not only because of its international policy, but also the national. It makes me feel ashamed to come from the United States - it's humiliating." »

Hewitt Denies Baldwin Romance

20 August 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Jennifer Love Hewitt insists her reported romance with Alec Baldwin was completely blown out of proportion - she was actually trying to help him be a better dad. The actress admits Baldwin turned to her during his marriage split from Kim Basinger last year - because he wanted to make sure a divorce wouldn't affect his daughter Ireland too badly. Hewitt reveals, "His main thing was wanting to remain a good dad, and he looked at me as somebody who had been through what his daughter was going to go through. He would say to me, 'What can I do to not screw this up and have her feel bad?' I took that as, 'Oh my God, I have the chance - when maybe my dad didn't handle the situation the right way - to fix it now for someone else.'" The actress also insists that her alleged romance with pal Enrique Iglesias was way off the mark. She adds, "We've been friends for a really long time. I don't think Enrique would ever go out with me. I'm too big of a dork." »

Adventures of Pluto Nash

19 August 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The drawing power of Eddie Murphy is bound to be severely tested by this wildly unfunny sci-fi/action comedy, unveiled Friday without press screenings. Playing a nightclub owner on the moon, even Murphy's expert comic timing and famed charisma can't rescue this effort, which also boasts a talented cast of supporting players similarly lost in space. The inevitable boxoffice disaster is likely to result in yet another "Nutty Professor" or "Doctor Dolittle" to restore Murphy's luster.

Written by Neil Cuthbert, whose resume includes "Mystery Men" and "Hocus Pocus", the film is set on the moon in the year 2087. Pluto Nash is a smuggler-turned-nightclub owner thanks to the ill fortune of his best friend, Tony Jay Mohr). One day, Pluto is approached by a pair of hired thugs working for a mysterious gangster named Rex Crater who wants to take over his operation. When Pluto refuses to sell, he finds himself fighting for his life, aided by his beautiful new waitress Dina (Rosario Dawson) and Bruno (Randy Quaid), his bald-headed robot bodyguard nearing obsolescence.

The plot's confusing twists and turns suggest some severe editing-room cutting, as do the abbreviated appearances by a slew of talented performers, including Joe Pantoliano as the aforementioned thug, Luis Guzman as a Pluto Nash fan and victim of robot abuse who helps him out of a jam, Peter Boyle as a retired cop and Pluto's confidant, Illeana Douglas as a specialist in "body alteration" and Burt Young as a loan shark. Far more egregious are the complete wastes of Pam Grier, who plays Pluto's mother and is not even allowed to kick any butt, and John Cleese, almost literally phoning it in as the officious automated driver (seen on a video screen) of a stolen car.

Making an unbilled cameo is Alec Baldwin as a Gotti-like mobster.

The space angle, which is ostensibly what makes the picture distinctive, results in such tired satirical bits as signs advertising Trump buildings and paper money featuring the visage of Hillary Clinton (those are the jokes, folks). Murphy finds himself in the uncharacteristic position of mainly playing straight man, to little comedic effect. If he had been allowed to improvise or riff more often, some fun might have resulted, but he mostly seems hemmed in. Scoring the few laughs in the picture are Quaid as the ultra-stiff robot and Mohr as a space-age lounge singer.

Tech credits are adequate, with elaborate sets built in Montreal providing some imaginative futuristic touches. The clever soundtrack features hip-hop versions of such songs as "Blue Moon" and "Dancin' in the Moonlight".

Baldwin In Art Scam?

9 August 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Alec Baldwin allegedly tried to change the reserve price on an auction item so he could buy it for less, according to US gossip journalists. The New York Post's Page Six column reports that the next issue of tabloid magazine Star will contain a story about the The Shadow actor's decidedly dodgy methods of getting hold of top pieces of art. The weekly says Baldwin was caught red-handed trying to cheat the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, New York, out of $3,000 by doctoring a sign stating the reserve price for a signed Norman Rockwell print. An eyewitness says, "He crossed out $4,000 and wrote $1,000, and then he bid $1,000. This was right at the beginning of the auction." Star reports Baldwin was confronted by a man who said, "Hey, what the heck are you doing? You can't do that." Baldwin supposedly then sheepishly went back and changed the minimum to $4,000. He ended up winning the artwork with a $7,000 bid. But theater executive director Steve Hamilton says, "Alec just misread the opening bid. He is a theater trustee and would never rip us off." Page Six suggests the actor's actions may have been caused by his allegedly poor financial situation. »

Drudge Threatens Baldwin Over Gay Slur

7 August 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Controversial internet columnist Matt Drudge has threatened to sue Hollywood star Alec Baldwin after the actor accused him of being gay. The Pearl Harbor star made the claims during an appearance on shock jock Howard Stern's radio show. According to New York gossip site Pagesix, the 44-year-old actor told Stern, "Matt Drudge hit on me in the hallway at ABC Studios in LA when I was doing the Gloria Allred show. He came right up to me and he looked like he had a fork and knife in each of his hands. He said, 'Do you have any Tabasco sauce? I want to drizzle it all over you.'" But Drudge - who himself was unsuccessfully sued by the former US President Bill Clinton's White House for $30 million dollars for libel - has hit back, saying, "This is a guy whose career is in turnaround, and his mind is not holding up well. I've never met Alec Baldwin. If he has fantasies about being cruised by guys maybe he can star in 'Cruising Part 2: The Troll Years.'" And the reporter adds that he's not sure suing Baldwin for slander would be a profitable venture - particularly after the star's high profile and expensive divorce from Kim Basinger earlier this year . He says, "My lawyer tells me what said about me is actionable, but does Alec have any cash left to collect damages?" »

Kristin's Out of The Dating Game

Single Sex and the City star Kristin Davis has given up on finding her perfect guy - because she's sick of wearing make-up and dressing to impress. And, as summer temperatures fire up her native New York, the actress admits she'd rather be out walking her dog Callie and chilling out at home with friends. Davis, 37, who has been romantically linked with Alec Baldwin, among others, in the past couple of years, admits she's sick of looking for her Prince Charming. She says, "I like to just put my hair up in a bun, put my sunglasses on and wander around without make-up on. I haven't had a date in a long time, I'm not really a dater, or a blind dater. My life with my friends is very full, so I don't notice so much." »

Billy Baldwin Fires Off About "Nutcase" Basinger

15 April 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Billy Baldwin has blasted his former sister-in-law Kim Basinger for giving his brother Alec a bad name. In an exclusive interview with American tabloid National Enquirer, Billy, 39, says he's tired of the bad press his brother's getting, and is keen to set the record straight. He says, "I'm fed up with the bashing my big brother is taking. It's all Kim Basinger' the saint' and Alec Baldwin' the bully'. It's not fair and it's not true. Kim is a black widow spider. She's a nutcase." Bitter Baldwin asked to meet a reporter from the tabloid in Los Angeles days after news of his brother's divorce settlement were leaked to the press earlier this month. And, though he knew his comments would upset Alec, Billy was determined to tell the world about his terrible ex-sister-in-law. He adds, "Kim's side always gets out there, making Alec look like the bad guy. And the Baldwins have said nothing. We've taken the 'high road'. It's time for me to defend my big brother. Kim's a control freak. She's bipolar. She has multiple personalities. She has a lot of mental problems. She's a neurotic mess. There's some defect in her brain chemistry." Baldwin is particularly annoyed by comments Basinger has made, claiming his brother beat her during their seven-year marriage. He says, "Alec denies ever striking her. Is my brother a saint? No. Is he volatile? Yes. But he is not a wife-beater. I think what may have happened is that Kim may have taken a run at Alec during a fight and he may have put his arm up to protect himself - or put her off. But that's not beating your wife." »

Alec Baldwin Attacked Online

Alec Baldwin has been getting so much hate mail in the "guest book" on his website, he's been forced to close it down. Baldwin, who was recently chastised by Florida Governor Jeb Bush for publicly vowing to leave America if his brother George W. Bush won 2000's Presidential elections - and then not doing so - believes the abuse is a result of people who oppose his politics. In "a special note to all our visitors" the star writes, "Most of the offensive material has been political in nature. I find that rather disappointing considering the website was constructed plainly as a means to communicate with my audience about my work." Baldwin, who blames "political extremists whose only goal is to harass and disrupt," vows to reopen the guest book, but only to those who "leave their actual email address by virtue of a signature verification". »

Baldwin Speaks Out Against Bush

Alec Baldwin has hit back at American Governor Jeb Bush, after the politician reminded the Hollywood star of a promise he made. The Florida Governor noted that Baldwin, who visited Tallahassee last week, had vowed to leave the country if his brother, George, won the Presidential elections in 2000 - but the Pearl Harbor had failed to do so, despite Bush Jnr's protracted victory. Baldwin replied, "You can tell Governor Bush to rest assured that I'm not going to leave the country because we have to get him out of office and we have to get his brother out of office in 2004." The politically concerned star even questioned Bush Jnr.'s legally assisted ascent to the White House, adding, "Bush wasn't elected, he was selected - selected by five judges up in Washington who voted along party lines." »
