While appearing on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" (1996) with the rest of the "Party of Five" (1994) cast, was forced to write "I will not hit Julia" on a blackboard for the duration of the show as punishment for his character's abusive tendencies (10 February 1999).

In January 2004, he was sentenced to 4 months in jail in Washington state following a modified guilty plea to second-degree assault. He also agreed to undergo a sexual deviancy evaluation and to be under supervision for one year following his release. He had originally been charged with second-degree rape after he was accused of having sex in 1998 with a 12-year-old girl related to his ex-wife, continuing the relationship with her until 2001.
He and his ex-wife Marty met at a party in LA at the Derby, he said it was love at first sight.
His parents - Douglas and Diane - both played with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Doug is currently their principal oboe player.
