17 Lessons from '80s Movies to Take Back to School

23 August 2016 12:20 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

The films of the 1980s were ripe with electric guitars, new wave style and heavy-handed moralizing. Lessons were learned, obstacles surmounted, montages cut and forced upon audiences with reckless abandon. We laughed, we loved and most importantly, we learned. What did we learn? Well, with the cyclical return to school dovetailing ever so neatly with the recent wave of '80s nostalgia sparked by Stranger Things, we're taking a look at some life lessons a returning student can glean from the films of the 1980s. 1. Don't believe your talent show judges Your talent show judges may not grasp your obvious musical skill now, »

Emily S. Whitten: Nickelodeon and Nostalgia @ Sdcc 2016

30 July 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

As you undoubtedly know, San Diego’s Comic-Con International happened this past weekend, and I was fortunate to be amongst the tens of thousands of attendees. There was, as always, a mega-ton to see and do, and it was hard to keep the Fomo (Fear Of Missing Out) from getting completely out of control over the 4.5 days of the con. To stay sane, though, at some point you just have to accept that you’re going to miss a bunch, and focus on what you do have the opportunity to see.

This year, one of my main interests was what Nickelodeon was showcasing. Of course, Nickelodeon is always on my radar, and particularly the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, which I adore. But even beyond the coolness that is the Tmnt, this year, Nickelodeon was focusing on its past – in the best way possible. Through its late-night programming block of “The Splat, »

‘Stand by Me’ Oral History: Rob Reiner and Cast on River Phoenix and How Coming-of-Age Classic Almost Didn’t Happen

28 July 2016 12:05 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s been three decades since “Stand By Me” became the little drama that could, catapulting River Phoenix to stardom, establishing Rob Reiner as a director on the rise, and racking up big ticket sales on a paltry budget.

The story of four friends from small town in Oregon, hiking into the countryside in search of the body of a boy who has been hit and killed by a train, is an unlikely coming-of-age tale. Yet in Reiner’s sensitive hands, it becomes a meditation on mortality — one that transcends its 1950s setting to have a universal appeal.

Stand By Me” is unique in other ways. For one thing, it rivals “The 400 Blows” in its ability to evoke complex characterizations from young actors. Not only Phoenix as spiritual leader Chris Chambers, but co-stars Wil Wheaton as sensitive Gordie Lachance, Jerry O’Connell as wisecracking Vern Tessio, and Corey Feldman as hot-tempered Teddy Duchamp, »

Watch: Fan-Made 15th Anniversary Trailer for 'Fellowship of the Ring'

20 July 2016 9:55 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"You will unite, or you will fall." The first film in the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy first hit theaters December of 2001, nearly 15 years ago. To celebrate the anniversary, Miguel Branco edited together a brand new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and it's rather wonderful. This is one of my all-time favorite films (only topped by The Return of the King) and I still remember seeing it in theaters on a cold, snowy night in December. Elijah Wood stars as Frodo, with Sean Astin as Samwise, and Ian McKellen as Gandalf; including Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, and many others. This trailer should make you smile, and put a tear in your eye. Hard to believe it has been 15 years. Here's the fan-made 15th anniversary trailer for The Lord of the Rings »

The Goonies Sequel Unlikely To Get Off The Ground, According To Corey Feldman

5 July 2016 9:41 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Corey Feldman, better known to you, I and the residents of Goon Docks as Mouth, has cast doubt over the possibility of The Goonies 2.

Despite reports claiming that the long-rumored sequel was close to entering production, with Steven Spielberg even claiming he was in possession of a story, Feldman recently told Movie Web that a direct follow-up is unlikely to ever materialize.

Much of that comes down to the age of director Richard Donner. Held up as the creative driving force behind both the 1985 cult classic and the languishing sequel, Feldman admitted that hopes of The Goonies 2 ever kicking into gear have been dwindling away for some time.

Richard Donner is 87 years old. And it’s like, no one really wants to make it without him. He’s the driving force behind it. He says it’s still alive. But as we all know…When you get to that age, »

The Goonies 2: Corey Feldman doubts it’ll happen

Simon Brew Jul 5, 2016

Corey Feldman throws fresh doubt on whether we'll ever get to see The Goonies 2...

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any kind of news on the planned The Goonies 2. The last real update came from the writer of the original, Chris Columbus, back in April 2015, where he revealed that he, director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg hadn’t yet come up with a story that they liked for the new film. As he said last year, “we are in the thick of it now, trying to figure it out”.

Yet 15 months later, there’s been no obvious sign of progress, and one of The GooniesCorey Feldman – has cast doubt over whether the film will happen at all.

The news that The Goonies 2 actually existed at all was broken by Richard Donner two years ago, but as Feldman told Movieweb, »

The Real Reason Goonies 2 Probably Won't Happen | Exclusive

4 July 2016 10:04 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Like other classics before it, such as It's a Wonderful Life and The Big Lebowski, The Goonies was not heralded as a piece of iconic Americana right out of the gate. In fact, when it arrived in the summer of 1985, it received fare to middling reviews with some critics calling it a noisy, vulgar Indiana Jones rip-off for the prepubescent set. Times change, though, and what may have initially been written off as fun seasonal fodder is now considered one of the all-time cinematic greats, and has gone on to become the most popular family movie in Warner Bros.' long and storied catalogue history, even eclipsing The Wizard of Oz. Like other true classics of a bygone era, The Goonies didn't ever get a sequel. Upon its release, it looked like a 'one and done' deal. But low and behold, over thirty years later, people involved with the original »

What do U.S. military veterans know about making movies? If the early success of the zombie comedy “Range 15” is any indication — kind of a lot, actually.

Billed as the first film to be produced by and star primarily U.S. military veterans, the movie claimed the Best Film Award at the GI Film Festival last month and has already generated more than $500,000 in its first week at the box office, showing on more than 550 screens through the crowdsourcing company Tugg, which lets individuals choose a film they want to pay to see in theaters. The film first hit theaters on Wednesday, June 15.

One-Eyed Willy to Return in Goonies 2?

6 June 2016 8:41 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The truth of the matter is, we may never see The Goonies 2. This, despite the fact that most cast members and the creative team behind the original really want it to happen. It's been years since original director Richard Donner confirmed the movie was happening. And since that time, we've heard both stars Sean Astin and Corey Feldman talk up the movie. Now, Sean Astin is back at it again, and while there is no real update on when the movie will happen, he does promise that a key player, however dead he may be, will be back to haunt the sequel.

Sean Astin played Mikey in the original The Goonies, and he was the defacto leader of the gang who lives in the lower class division of the Goondocks. Astin has probably been one of the loudest supporters of a sequel. At various points, he's said that The Goonies 2 »

The Important Character The Goonies 2 Plans On Bringing Back

6 June 2016 6:53 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The oft-discussed The Goonies 2 is one of those projects that we won.t really believe in until it.s actually playing in a theater near us. Key cast members, and even director Richard Donner, have discussed the projects at varying stages over the years (really, we have been covering it for a while now), so we take each new update with a grain of salt. This latest comes from a reliable source . aka, Mr. Sean Astin . so we trust it. We just don.t know how far we.re willing to go with this one.   Sean Astin, who of course played Mikey in the original The Goonies has been one of the most consistent supporters of The Goonies 2 over the years. He has teased that the sequel might be an adventure for the older members of the team, who.d now be adults. He has hinted that it »

Movie Review – The Do-Over (2016)

The Do-Over, 2016.

Directed by Steven Brill.

Starring Adam Sandler, David SpadePaula Patton, Kathryn HahnLuis Guzman, Nick Swardson, Sean Astin, Matt Walsh, Catherine Bell and Michael Chiklis.

Synopsis:

The life of a bank manager is turned upside down when a friend from his past manipulates him into faking his own death and taking off on an adventure.

As grossly repugnant as a failed bout of colonic irrigation, Adam Sandler’s latest paradise set circle jerk The Do-Over finds the literal one-time funny man scooping the very bowels of comedy to no effect. Sandler’s retreat into the bosom of Netflix maybe signals a sudden, if unremarkable awareness of the universal critical disdain of his last 15 years of cinematic output. Yet that would be to give Sandler credit where credit’s not due. Most likely, akin to some vague Kafka-esque, moustache-twirling villain, he saw an opportunity to peddle his bilious »
