When directing episodes of the TV show Bonanza
(1959), Altman became close friends with actor Dan Blocker
, who portrayed Hoss. Altman wanted Blocker to play the Roger Wade character in his version of Raymond Chandler
's The Long Goodbye
(1973), but he died before the commencement of shooting. The movie was dedicated to Blocker.
