‘Family Guy’ Won’t Do Any More ‘Star Wars’ Parodies, and Here’s Why

23 July 2016 2:05 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Don’t expect to see any more “Star Wars” parodies from Fox’s animated hit “Family Guy.”

The show produced three “Star Wars” homages (2007’s “Blue Harvest,” 2009’s “Something, Something, Something Dark Side” and 2010’s “It’s a Trap!”) several years ago. But that was back before Disney acquired Lucasfilm and jumpstarted the franchise.

“The new regime is a little more difficult to deal with,” executive producer Alec Sulkin said. “Before we were just dealing with Lucasfilm. Seth [MacFarlane] had a good relationship with them. It’s not that Seth has a bad relationship with Disney, but they’re a bit more rigid.”

Executive producer Rich Appel said it was understandable, as “they’re a little more careful now that they’re rolling out new movies.”

That roster includes 60 different heroes, and 40 different villains, according to producer Butch Lukic. That list includes favorites like Plastic Man, John Constantine, Lex Luthor, Mr. Freeze, Riddler, Mr. Mxyzptik, Zod, and Darkseid, as well as lesser-knowns like Demons Three, Space Cabby (voiced by Patton Oswalt), Atrocitus, and Steppenwolf. »

‘The Bell Jar’: Kirsten Dunst’s Entire Career Has Been Leading Up To Her Feature Directorial Debut – Girl Talk

21 July 2016 8:38 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present and future.

In the spring of 1999, Sofia Coppola’s feature directorial debut, a big screen version of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel “The Virgin Suicides,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. A delicate, deeply feeling and achingly human portrait of suburban ennui and teenage depression, the film was anchored by a performance by a then-17-year-old Kirsten Dunst. As Lux Lisbon, the prettiest and wildest and most broken of the five Lisbon sisters that the film so intimately chronicles, Dunst was tasked with straddling the gap between deep pain and flickering hope.

The film follows the Lisbons after their youngest sister, Cecilia, twice attempts suicide, completing the act on her second try, all during party thrown by her terrified parents in hopes of cheering her up enough to keep her alive. The Lisbons, by and large, are suffocated by their »

Promo Art For Cartoon Network's Justice League Action Adds Some Surprising Heroes To The Team

27 June 2016 3:55 PM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

It's hard to imagine the classic Justice League Unlimited series being topped, but Cartoon Network will launch a new 11 minute show revolving around this DC Comics superhero team this Fall. While it appears to be aimed at younger fans, the roster should definitely intrigue fans, especially as four very surprising additions have been made today (as you can see from the promo poster below).  Joining Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman will be Green Arrow, Plastic Man, Firestorm, and, er, Space Cabbie. The latter is particularly surprising, but this is a fun and unique mixture for sure.    With the likes of Kevin Conroy (Batman), Mark Hamill (The Joker), James Woods (Lex Luthor), and Diedrich Bader (Booster Gold) lending their voices to Justice League Action, it's shaping up well so far, and there may be enough here for comic book readers so that they too can enjoy what's on offer. New characters revealed for animated series Justice League Action

7 June 2016 1:20 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back in January it was announced that the Justice League is returning to the small screen in animated form, with Cartoon Network set to launch the new series Justice League Action.

At the time, it was revealed that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill will voice Batman and The Joker along with James Woods as Lex Luthor and Dierich Bader as Booster Gold, while Wonder Woman’s inclusion was confirmed by the official promo art.

Now, thanks to Bleeding Cool, we have a look at more characters set to feature in the series, including the likes of Shazam, Firestorm, Martian Manhunter, Harley Quinn, Hawkman, Lobo, Blue Beetle, Doctor Light, Doctor Fate, Big Barda, and a few others I’m struggling to make out…

As yet there’s been no word as to when we can expect to see Justice League Action, but hopefully an announcement will be forthcoming soon.

Why Shia Labeouf and Joel Edgerton are the Born-Again Stars of Cannes

17 May 2016 9:18 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

At a film festival, an exciting new actor can become the talk of the town. But there are also moments when that star-is-born magnetism gathers around a performer who is already well-established. He has simply redefined himself — or, perhaps, fully defined himself for the first time. At Cannes this year, that’s happening with two actors whose madly buzzed-about performances place them at a newly elevated square one. The first is Shia Labeouf, who strikes a note of mesmerizing James Dean-as-millennial-wastrel authenticity in “American Honey,” Andrea Arnold’s extraordinary hand-held youthquake of a road movie. The second is Joel Edgerton, who has, of course, been a dynamic star on the rise for several years now — but when you watch his performance in Jeff Nichols’ delicate and original civil-rights drama, “Loving,” you feel as if you’re seeing a brand new actor. And that’s a sign of the kind »

11 Good Movies to Watch on Hulu in May 2016

10 May 2016 3:47 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

That’s right. Hulu.

I’m here to tell you that there’s a cinematic streaming goldmine available on Hulu that includes recent hits, older classics, domestic releases, and foreign imports. It’s even home to hundreds of Criterion titles. Sure there’s plenty of filler and seemingly thousands of titles that can’t possibly be real, but I’m here to recommend some good movies to watch this month on Hulu.

Pick of the Month — Hwayi: A Monster Boy (2013)

South Korean cinema features no shortage of brilliant and brutal action thrillers, but while everyone knows about the likes of I Saw the Devil and Memories of Murder there are more than a few gems that have slipped through the cracks. Jang Joon-hwan’s long overdue follow-up to Save the Green Planet is a fast-moving, creatively violent mix of dark deeds and beautifully choreographed fights and stunts. There’s a wicked sense of humor running through it »

Justice League Wasn't the Only Film George Miller Almost Directed For Warner Bros.

2 May 2016 12:25 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

By now, most of us know the story of Mad Max director George Miller and his never-realized Justice League project. But did you know there was another famous film he almost went on to direct for Warner Bros.? Some of us may never get over what Justice League: Mortal could have been. Perhaps the pain will be less acute over this new information, considering the final product was a relatively well-received movie. Miller (along with Roland Joffé) were at one point set to direct Contact. Ultimately directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump), 1997's Contact starred Jodie Foster as Dr. Eleanor Arroway, a Seti scientist whose long search for alien life leads to actual discovery and more doubt than she's every experienced in life. It also starred Matthew McConaughey, Tom Skerritt, James Woods, John Hurt, and Angela Bassett. The film changed a bit from Carl Sagan »

Review: "Diggstown" Starring James Woods, Louis Gossett Jr. And Bruce Dern; Kino Lorber Blu-ray Edition

1 May 2016 4:30 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Doug Oswald

James Woods plays a down on his luck con artist who teams up with retired fighter Louis Gossett, Jr. to score a huge win against a local mob boss in a high stakes boxing match in “Diggstown,” now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. Michael Ritchie directs an impressive cast in this entertaining 1992 comedy. However, the MGM release never found its audience and underperformed at the box office upon its release.

The movie opens in Winfield Prison, Olivair County Georgia, where a fight is taking place in the common area with the full knowledge of the prison guards and Warden Bates (Marshall Bell). Wolf Forrester (Randall “Tex” Cobb) is fighting Minoso Torres (Alex Garcia) as Gabriel Caine (Woods) helps an inmate escape. Wolf ends up in the prison hospital after losing the fight and he and Gabe discuss their plans as fighter and promoter after they’re released. »

When Actors Stop Acting And Start Living A Role

17 April 2016 4:05 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

This week, Neil Calloway argues that method acting is often unnecessary…

This week it was revealed that Jared Leto sent pornography and condoms to his Suicide Squad co-stars in preparation for his role as the Joker. When I did that with my work colleagues I got arrested, but it turns out to be Ok if you’re an Oscar winning actor. It does also highlight the issue of when acting crosses the line into living a role.

There is a long and not so proud history of actors going above and beyond to immerse themselves in the character they are playing to ensure a great performance.

Daniel Day-Lewis is currently not looking for acting work as he believes it would be hard to top his performance as the title character in Lincoln, during which he would send his co-stars text messages in character as Abraham Lincoln; I do hope Sally Field »
