The spice continues to flow as Dune: Part Two takes another big sip of the Water of Life and carries on with its money-making run, now three weeks since the title celebrated its domestic opening. Likewise, Kung Fu Panda 4 also continued to be a hot contender as it rolled out in other markets, including a three-day preview session before its full opening in the country on March 22. Other titles like the Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian-led Love Lies Bleeding and Mark Wahlberg-starrer Arthur the King also rang in their broad premieres but, unfortunately, didn’t gather the same amount of viewers as titles from previous weeks.

The first trailer for the remake of The Crow was finally released last week, and although it had its fans, it generated quite a lot of backlash. Alex Proyas, the director of the original movie, doesn’t seem to be a fan of the remake and took to Facebook to say that The Crow should remain the legacy of Brandon Lee.
“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work,” Proyas wrote. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. The Crow is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.

Exclusive: Former USC football-turned convicted global drug kingpin, Owen Hanson, has been released early from a federal prison term of 21 years, and is on his way to transitional housing in Long Beach, CA, Deadline has learned per his attorney Mark F. Adams. Hanson is the subject of an Amazon Sports docuseries that’s being produced by Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas, which Deadline first told you about. Hanson’s release, which becomes official in June 26, 2025, should make for great fodder for this docuseries directed by Jody McVeigh-Schultz, and produced by Adam Ridley, Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Archie Gips’ Unrealistic Ideas.
Hanson was sentenced in late 2017 after being in arrested in September 2015. He’s served slightly less than seven years in a federal prison located in Englewood, Co.
Hanson’s drug-dealing career boomed from selling recreational drugs and steroids to teammates in college during the early aughts to an empire that spanned U.

T.J. Miller is best known for his work alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool as the bartender Weasel, but before that, he first collaborated with Michael Bay on the Transformers franchise, Age of Extinction. After his experience there, the actor did not seem eager enough to work with the director anymore.

Arthur the King's title misleads audiences, sounding like a medieval epic instead of a dog movie. Mixed reviews and a score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes suggest mediocre reception. Mark Wahlberg's declining box office draw and a poor marketing campaign may have led to the film's flop.
Mark Wahlberg’s new adventure movie, Arthur the King, has flopped at the box office with a measly $7.5 million opening weekend, but why is the film doing so poorly? Adapted from Mikael Lindnord’s memoir Arthur – The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home, Arthur the King stars Wahlberg as Lindnord, the captain of a team of mountain climbers, who finds a stray dog during a grueling 435-mile climb. Arthur the King was directed by Simon Cellan Jones, scripted by Michael Brandt, and released into theaters by Lionsgate following an ill-advised, male-skewering marketing campaign.

Mark Wahlberg clashed with director Martin Scorsese during the filming of 2006's The Departed. The actor revealed that he got hair extensions for Invincible, his next movie, and he refused to remove them after his filming as Dignam went longer than expected. The Departed was worth the behind-the-scenes friction in the end, as it was a major critical and commercial success.
The Departed star Mark Wahlberg addresses the behind-the-scenes clashes that occurred with Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio leads The Departed's cast as Billy, an undercover cop who works to identify a mole in the Boston police department. The film, which took home four Oscars, features a stacked cast, with Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin also starring. Wahlberg played Dignam in the film, a hot-headed Sergeant, and he notoriously had some friction with Scorsese during filming.

Simon Cellan Jones-directed Arthur the King was born as a promising flick to do well on the big screen, and Lionsgate had all the reasons to believe in it. But the road to tackle the competitors was not smooth as the move was scrapped badly.
Mark Wahlberg in Arthur the King (2024)
In hindsight, there is not one single reason for the bumpy road to the Mark Wahlberg-led movie. Dog movies that have done quite well in the past include Channing Tatum’s movie, Dog. But what led to the downfall of Arthur the King? What went wrong? One mistake from Lionsgate may have pushed the movie to the edge of box-office doom.

For a second consecutive weekend, Kung Fu Panda 4 held onto the number one spot of the box-office weekend, albeit by only $0.9 million.
In its second weekend of release, Kung Fu Panda 4 brought in $30.0 million to stay on top of the top ten. This gives the Universal Pictures product an overall total of $107.7 million. Meanwhile, still relegated to the second spot of the top ten, Dune: Part Two finished just behind that with $29.1 million over the weekend for Warner Brothers. This brings the film’s three-week tally to $205.3 million. Debuting in third place with $7.5 million was the family film Arthur the King starring Mark Wahlberg. The offering from Lionsgate Films took the place of another Lionsgate film as Imaginary was pushed down to fourth where it added $5.6 million, raising its two-week total to $19.1 million. Arthur the King is a wholesome, tear-jerking adventure film that showcases the unbreakable bond between a racer and his furry companion. Don't be fooled by the cheesy trailer; while it certainly relies on melodramatic 'dog movie' tropes, it's not as cheesy as it could be. While not groundbreaking, the movie provides a feel-good experience perfect for families and fans of canine companions on the big screen.
In our recent interview with Oscar-nominated actor Mark Wahlberg, he dubbed his new project Arthur the King a "big, four-quadrant movie." There is certainly a case to be made for said claim, and don't be surprised if Arthur the King makes at least an adequate profit at the box office. After all, the previous Wahlberg collaboration with director Simon Cellan Jones, aka The Family Plan, shattered Apple TV+ streaming records. Kung Fu Panda 4 barely beats Dune: Part Two to retain the top spot at the domestic box office over the weekend. Mark Wahlberg's Arthur the King debuts at No. 3, while fellow newcomers One Life and The American Society of Magical Negroes both land Top 10 spots. Director Jang Jae-hyun’s supernatural horror film, Exhuma, boasts this weekend's highest per-theater average.
Kung Fu Panda 4 just squeaks by Dune: Part Two en route to winning the weekend box office. After a very slow January and February to kick off 2024, things are heating up in March. And according to the estimates, Jack Black’s return as Master Po Ping will repeat as the No. 1 movie in domestic theaters for the second weekend in a row. But it was an extremely close race.

Real-life adventure racer, Mikael Lindnord, had his story adapted into the film "Arthur the King," starring Mark Wahlberg. Lindnord's book "Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home" inspired the heartwarming tale of a stray dog who joins a race. Lindnord was heavily involved in the production of the movie, ensuring accuracy and bringing his incredible journey to life on screen.
"Based on a true story" is usually a good start when it comes to popular movies, especially regarding athletes and biographies. We're looking at you, Rudy, Miracle, and Remember the Titans. And now, you can add "adventure racing" to the mix of professional sports that have been covered on the big screen with Arthur the King.

Burt Reynolds didn't appreciate Mark Wahlberg laughing at him during their characters' first meeting in Boogie Nights. Wahlberg was not only surprised by Reynolds' Irish accent, which made him bust out laughing, but also the veteran actor's reluctance to embrace the movie's potential. Reynolds' performance as pornographic filmmaker Jack Horner earned the actor the only Oscar nomination of his illustrious career.
“Don’t you ever laugh at me, kid!” This is how the late Burt Reynolds reacted when Mark Wahlberg chuckled at one of his lines of dialogue in Boogie Nights (1997). Reynolds was at one time a preeminent Hollywood A-lister, but his career was in a bit of a funk when he joined the cast of director Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights. And when Reynolds decided to use an Irish accent for his character, porn filmmaker Jack Horner, Wahlberg made the mistake of laughing at the veteran actor.

Transformers One boasts a star-studded cast, including Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson. With a focus on Cybertron and iconic characters, the film promises a unique and immersive experience. Despite high box office expectations, Transformers One may not match the duo's previous record-breaking success.
The upcoming Transformers One movie has high box office expectations thanks to the film’s specific pairing of two actors. The new movie in the Transformers franchise will be a prequel and detail the origins of Cybertron. Produced by Paramount Animation and Hasbro, many familiar Autobots and Decepticons will appear in Transformers One, and it will be the first animated Transformers project since the 1980s. Any animated project has a necessity for talented voice actors and the Transformers One cast features an impressive lineup of actors to bring the Cybertronians to life. How does an “A” CinemaScore and 4 1/2 star PostTrak movie with a major star and a dog underdeliver at the box office?
The adventure sports-charged, doggie-with-a-heart title Arthur the King from Lionsgate had no chance of winning a crown this weekend with an $8M-$10M projection. However, many expected this well-received movie to come at the top of expectations. It did not with a $7.5M opening.
Also, the misfiring of “A” CinemaScore, mid-budget movies at the box office is becoming a trend.
Arthur the King‘s underperformance had to do with the fact that it looked ripe for streaming by today’s standards and not theatrical, right? That’s why people didn’t show up? Yeah, but that’s not 100% of the reason.
True, stars need to have a come-to-Jesus with themselves when making streaming movies in conjunction with theatrical titles: Do you water down your marquee image by making yourself available for free at home?...

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) and “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) came in a close #1-#2 this weekend, with the DreamWorks Animation title edging out Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi adaptation by just under $1 million ($30 million to $29.1 million). The two films, in their second and third weekends respectively, are positioned to exceed their most optimistic pre-release projections.
Going against last year’s trend of disappointing franchise results, the two sequels made up about two thirds of the weekend’s $90 million total. With little help from other new releases, this fell just short of last year’s $92 million. It reduced the year’s deficit to nine percent.
“Dune” joined WB’s “Wonka” as the second film to pass the domestic $200 million total since last July. By next weekend, it will surpass that film’s $218 million gross.
How high could it go? Pre-release, the most optimistic hopes were perhaps $250 million — $150 million more than the first “Dune,...

March has been going along well, but only one new wide release made much of a mark this weekend as “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” continued to reign over all, including an actual “king.” Read on for the weekend box office report.
After scoring one of the second-best openings of 2024, the animated “Kung Fu Panda 4” held onto first place for a second weekend in a row, winning Friday with $8.8 million and then repeating with an estimated $30 million for the weekend, down 48% from its opening weekend. It has grossed $107.7 million in its first 10 days in North America. It added another $39.6 million in 56 international territories for a global weekend of $69.6 million and a global total of $176.5 million.

Mark Wahlberg's Arthur the King opens at a disappointing third place at the box office with $7.5 million in its first weekend. Despite its struggles, the movie received a high audience approval with an A CinemaScore grade, hinting at possible success in the future. Sunday Am Update: The whole marketplace is coming in lighter than expected at $89M, which is -3% off from the same frame a year ago when Shazam Fury of the Gods did $30M. That’s exactly what the second weekend is for Kung Fu Panda 4 which is a great hold at -48%, rising to $107.7M stateside running total. Legendary/Warner Bros’ Dune Part Two isn’t far behind with $29.1M, -37%, for a running total of $205.3M. The domestic endgame on the sequel is expected to be around $275M.

The early weekend box office numbers are in, and it looks like Dune: Part Two wasn’t quite able to take the number one spot from Kung Fu Panda 4 after all. It was very close, with the animated sequel grossing $30 million to Dune’s $29.1 million. It’s so close that I’m not quite willing to admit my prediction that Dune 2 would top Panda was wrong, as Denis Villeneuve’s sequel has been overperforming at Sunday matinees the last few weeks. That said, even if it doesn’t top Panda, it still had a great weekend, with it only dropping a modest 37% in its third week. It also passed the double-century mark, with its final gross at $205 million. Will it cross $300 million? It’s possible, although it will face heavy competition over the next two weeks with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong.

Universal/DreamWorks’ “Kung Fu Panda 4” and Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” are going unchallenged by several new wide releases this weekend, with “Kung Fu Panda 4” getting the narrow edge for No. 1 with $30 million in its second weekend in theaters.
With just a 48% drop from its $57.9 million opening weekend, “Kung Fu Panda 4” now has a two-weekend total of $107 million domestic and is well on pace to blow past the $186 million domestic run of fellow animated franchise feature “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” a year ago. Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two are still going strong at the box office, with both movies celebrating milestones this weekend.
From DreamWorks Animation and Universal, the Jack Black-voiced Kung Fu Panda 4 dethroned Dune 2 in its sophomore weekend with an estimated $30 million from 4,067 theaters as it leaped past the $100 million mark to finish Sunday with a 10-day domestic total of $107.7 million. Overseas, it grossed another $39.6 million for a foreign tally of $68.6 million and $176.4 million globally. The pic fell a respectable 48 percent domestically.
Not far behind was Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2, now in its third weekend. The Legendary-Warner Bros. tentpole is the first release of 2024 to clear $200 million domestically. The pic earned an estimated $29.1 million from 3,847 cinemas, putting its North American total at $205.3 million.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” remained victorious at the domestic box office, collecting a solid $30 million in its second weekend of release. After 10 days on the big screen, the animated family film has grossed $107.7 million in North America and $176.5 million globally.
Those ticket sales easily surpassed the debut of Mark Wahlberg’s canine drama “Arthur the King,” which opened in third place. It arrived on the lower end of expectations with a soft $7.5 million from 3,003 theaters. Lionsgate spent $19 million on the feel-good story, about a man who befriends a wounded stray dog, so its modest price tag could soften its box office shortcomings. Though critics weren’t fond of “Arthur the King” (it has a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes), moviegoers were more receptive and gave the film an “A” grade on CinemaScore.

The protagonist of the comic book-based The Crow saga, Eric Draven is one of the most iconic fictional antiheroes of all time. Created by James O’Barr back in 1989, he was initially played by the late Brandon Lee in the 1994 film of the same name, which became a massive cult classic.
Over the years, it spawned three more installments in the film series till 2005. But then the franchise was once again announced to be resurrected in 2008, and Jason Momoa became the final contender to play the lead in the remake by 2016.

However, Momoa’s tenure as the antihero was cut short due to an unexpected exit from the movie, and the role of Draven was passed on to Bill Skarsgård, who recently got the trailer released for his film and will soon be seen in the upcoming reboot.

Simon Cellan Jones, the director of Arthur the King, spoke about his time working with Mark Wahlberg again, that special connection between mankind and dogs, and adapting the true story.
The film stars Wahlberg (alongside other big names like Simu Liu and Nathalie Emmanuel) as Michael Light, an adventure racer who hopes to win one more race to end his career on a high note. Along the way, he comes across a dog he lovingly names Arthur, who miraculously crosses hundreds of miles of jungles and rough terrain to find himself a new home.
The story is based on the real-life experience of Sweden racer Mikael Lindnord, who wrote a book about the whole ordeal titled Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home.

Recently, Mark Wahlberg's movie Arthur the King broke his streak of poor Rotten Tomatoes scores with a critics' score of 64%. Wahlberg's shift to family-friendly and inspirational movies may explain the positive reception of Arthur the King. Despite polarizing receptions, Wahlberg's movies always draw viewers, even though they can be challenging to get right.
Mark Wahlberg's new drama, Arthur the King, breaks the actor's streak of poor Rotten Tomatoes scores. The movie, which is based on a true story, follows Michael Light (Wahlberg), who is participating in an endurance race in the Dominican Republic with a team of athletes. Along the way, the team runs into a stray dog they cannot shake off. However, the dog, dubbed Arthur, captivates the world as he continues tagging along for hundreds of miles, crossing rivers and mountains to complete a race most humans can't.

With no big new releases at the box office this weekend, sci-fi epic "Dune: Part Two" and "Kung Fu Panda 4" are staying seated at the top of the charts. It's a closer race than last week, though, as the second half of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation continues to draw crowds and rake in those lucrative IMAX ticket sales. Deadline reports that "Dune: Part Two" is tracking to gross $28-29 million in its third weekend at the box office, a relatively small drop of around 38% from last week.
The beauty of counter-programming, though, is that two big movies can dominate at the box office without cannibalizing each other (sometimes they can even team up and help each other). After a strong $57.9 million start last weekend, "Kung Fu Panda 4" is tracking for a $31.5 million second weekend, a drop of around 46%.
While Jack Black's kung fu fighting panda looks likely to land the No.

Mark Wahlberg is one of the most continuously fascinating movie stars of his generation, as he seems to constantly be interested in reinventing the types of films he stars in. While he got his start in gritty dramas like Three Kings and Boogie Nights, Wahlberg has taken a greater interest in playing inspirational historical figures in recent years with films like Deepwater Horizon and Father Stu. Although these biopics still seem geared at the older viewers that may have already been interested in his earlier work, Wahlberg has also taken an interest in appealing to more family-friendly audiences with dramedies like Me Time and Instant Family. Wahlberg’s latest star turn seems to be a synthesis of these two goals, as it's both an inspirational biopic and a family-friendly adventure. Arthur the King tells the true story of Mikael Lindnord’s adventure-racing trek across the Dominican Republic.

Arthur the King is expected to premiere at No. 3 with $8 million. The Mark Wahlberg movie fell behind the holdover hits Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4. However, it outperformed every other new title released the same weekend.
The Mark Wahlberg movie Arthur the King is racing toward the Top 3 in its opening weekend. Per Deadline, the Arthur the King release is projected to debut at the domestic box office with a 3-day opening weekend total of $8 million. This will place it at No.

Universal’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” held on to the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend without any challenge from a handful of new releases, but the gap between it and Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” is quite narrow.
In its second weekend, “Kung Fu Panda 4” is currently estimated to earn $31.5 million, dropping just 46% from its $57.9 million start. Fueled by families who haven’t had an animated movie to see in theaters since “Migration” during the holidays, as well as by some nostalgic millennials who grew up seeing the first “Kung Fu Panda” back in 2008, this DreamWorks sequel is set to blow past $100 million in domestic grosses by the end of the weekend.
“Dune: Part Two,” meanwhile, is just behind “Kung Fu Panda 4” with an industry-estimated third weekend total of $28.5 million. That’s another strong hold as it drops just 34% from its second weekend.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” are both putting up strong holds in North American theaters, staying ahead of Lionsgate’s new based-on-a-real-dog drama “Arthur the King,” which earned $3 million from 3,003 locations on its opening day.
The Mark Wahlberg vehicle is expected to earn south of $8 million heading into the weekend, which would be good for bronze on domestic charts. It’s a solid place to start for the drama, which carries close to a $20 million production budget and boasts a stellar “A” grade from audience survey firm Cinema Score. (Reviews have been mixed.) As a canine comparison, the Channing Tatum-starring “Dog” from United Artists opened to $14 million back in February 2022 before more than quadrupling that with a $61 million total. Lionsgate will hope that “Arthur” can strike a similar chord with audiences.

In recent years, Mark Wahlberg has done projects that are aimed at family audiences. While the actor has done his fair share of intense and bold movies, his recent ventures like Uncharted, Father Stu, and The Family Plan show his intention to attract a larger audience. Wahlberg is continuing this trend with another true-story-inspired film Arthur the King.

While the film’s trailer and promotions have intrigued audiences, it does not have the appeal of recent big-ticket movies like Dune 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4. Information regarding the film’s weekend box office forecast has been revealed and it seems the film will have a slow start at the box office.

In this week’s Box Office Predictions column, I went against the grain of what box office gurus were predicting. They seemed to think Kung Fu Panda 4 would have an easy win over Dune: Part Two, but I had a feeling audiences were really starting to love Villeneuve’s film, with some returning to see it a second or third time. Thus, I predicted Dune 2 would return to first place. While it’s too early for me to brag about being right, it seems both movies are in a dead-heat battle for number 1.
According to Deadline’s early numbers, the final tally for both is too close to call, with Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune 2 heading towards a $27-30 million weekend finish. Panda is looking to dip somewhere in the area of 48% in its second weekend, while Dune is only dropping 35% in its third weekend. Villeneuve...

The Crow, the forthcoming movie directed by Rupert Sanders, has been the talk of the town since its announcement in 2022. The action-thriller is a reimagining of the same-titled 1994 Alex Proyas film, featuring Brandon Lee in the lead role. With its top-notch cast and storytelling, the $94 million movie was a huge box-office success and struck a chord with the audience. Now the official trailer for Bill Skarsgård’s upcoming flick has further piqued the viewer’s interest.
However, some of the most disturbing information regarding the movie—which will hit theaters on June 7—has just recently come to light. In just one day, the trailer garnered a whopping 53,000 dislikes on YouTube, in contrast to just 42,000 likes. These figures put a serious damper on the movie’s potential to do well at the box office.

After more than 15 years of development hell, the reimagining of “The Crow” will finally hit theaters this summer.
“The Crow” is based on the indie comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr that was originally published back in 1989 by Caliber Press. 30 years ago in 1994, a film adaptation of the comic book by visionary director Alex Proyas was released into theaters, perhaps better known as the movie where star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set during the middle of production.
Miramax stepped in and spent $8 million to pick up where production left off and finish the film. “The Crow” went on to gross $93.7 million at the box office against its $23 million budget, and the film eventually became a cult classic. Three lackluster sequels and a television adaptation would follow, however the property had always been earmarked for what current distributor Lionsgate is calling a reimagining.

Mark Wahlberg is back with “Arthur the King.” And the typical Wahlberg experience has been suitably augmented by a very sweet ingredient: the addition of an adorable dog (the titular Arthur). Put your paws together everyone.
Based on the best-selling memoir “Arthur – The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home” by Mikael Lindnord, it details a group of mountain climbers who, on a competition, meet the little dog, who ends up being a key member of the team. Wahlberg plays a character based on Lindnord, the elite Swedish athlete who gave meatballs to a starving stray dog that ended up changing his life. (Lindnord ended up writing another book about how rescue dogs save our lives.)
Action, adventure, a very cute dog. What more could you want? Exactly. Here’s how to watch “Arthur the King” right now and where to expect it on streaming.
When is the release date?...

Mark Wahlberg and director Simon Cellan Jones (The Family Plan) join forces for Arthur the King, a film that tells the incredible true story of a dog who braved the jungle for over 400 miles to find a home. In many ways, Michael is his own worst enemy, driven by his past failures and not really knowing the meaning of being part of a team.
Michael can’t work as a realtor for his father and is always preoccupied with thoughts of racing when he’s at home with his wife and daughter. With a new movie in theaters today in “Arthur The King,” Mark Wahlberg is making the press rounds. And that includes a memorable stop-in with Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, where the actor talked about some of the biggest films in his career. Wahlberg had all kinds of anecdotes, like meeting James Cameron for “Titanic” and his bad haircut in “The Departed,” but one particular story stuck out: the irascible Burt Reynolds on the set of “Boogie Nights,” and a certain accent he used in a scene early in shooting.

Fifty years ago, every studio told Joe Camp — who died Friday after a long illness — he was barking up the wrong tree with Benji.
While working in advertising, the Texas-based Camp dreamed of telling a Lassie-like story from the dog’s point of view, and so he penned a script about a beloved stray pooch attempting to rescue two kidnapped children. Naming the film after his own dog, Camp secured independent financing and helmed the project himself.
“He screened it for every single studio, and each one passed,” recalls Camp’s son, filmmaker Brandon Camp, to The Hollywood Reporter. “They all said, ‘No one is interested in this movie.’ ”
Without a distributor, Joe Camp formed Mulberry Square Productions with Ed Vanston to release the film, which starred Peter Breck, Patsy Garrett and mixed-breed canine Higgins. They managed to book Benji at a single Dallas theater in 1974, and more locations followed as word-of-mouth grew.
