Music: Review: The Lemonheads

29 June 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Give Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando credit for tackling an eclectic set of songs and styles for the band’s covers album Varshons. Dando takes on the likes of Gram Parsons, Wire, G.G. Allin, and Townes Van Zandt, with the help of producer Gibby Haynes, guest vocalists Kate Moss and Liv Tyler, and his own so-deadpan-it’s-almost-inert sense of humor. The album clocks in at just over 30 minutes, and when The Lemonheads find a song that’s in their scruffy roots-rock sweet-spot—like their cover of Sam Gopal’s freakbeat chestnut “Yesterlove,” or Leonard Cohen’s ethereal “Hey, That ...

The Autobots and Decepticons once again duke it out with Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox constantly in danger. Is it worth your Independence Day dollar? Let’s get things started with Him No. 1 (Jeff Bayer), followed by Him No. 2 (Nick Allen).

He Said (Bayer)

Two and a half hours? Two and a half hours. Sigh. Out of all the bad decisions I think that is the worst. Forget about the Fallen being a knock-off of Emperor, which would make Megatron, Darth Vader, that’s nothing compared to being completely exhausted by the length.

Is Technology Ruining Movies?

18 June 2009 2:41 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

First off, the question the headline poses has nothing to do with CGI or actual advancements in filmmaking. I am asking whether everyday technology seen in movies is ruining the ability for filmmakers to tell their stories? This involves cell phones, satellite technology, wireless signals, Internet, etc. My biggest problem over the past few years involves cellular telephones. Everyone has a cell phone now and the movies mimic this advancement in technology, but it always seems to cause logic problems or moments I simply throw my hands in the air and say, "Not again." One example I can think of off the top of my head -- and I am sure many of you can think of others -- involves the little seen thriller P2 released by Summit in 2007. In this film a woman is stalked by a crazy man in the bowels of a building parking garage. While down

From the Palantir! (A Fantasy News Round-Up)

10 June 2009 8:15 AM, PDT | From thetorchonline | See recent thetorchonline news

Sadly, fantasy legend David Eddings, author of the Belgariad books and many others, died last Tuesday at age 77. Wow, this article on The Lord of the Rings' Liv Tyler is among the stupidest celebrity puff pieces I've ever read. Sample: "She seems more in control - even of her sexuality, which used to spill out like its own force field, just like those soap suds she wallowed in while washing the car in that famous scene from the movie One Night at McCool’s." What, is it a requirement that women, in fantasy films or otherwise, be written about in the most insipid, superficial way possible?

Bad News… Spider-Man 4 Will Probably Still Have a Girl In It

8 June 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

We've sort of joked in the past about how comic book fans always seem to have a problem with the women in all their favourite comic book movies, whether it's Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, Liv Tyler in Incredible Hulk, Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four, or Halle Berry in Catwoman (ha), they can't seem to come to grips with the fact that characters of the opposite sex might actually share screen time alongside their beloved men in tights. Kirsten Dunst is another actress who has taken a lot of flack for her performance in the Spider-Man films, and while I can understand some people not liking her portrayal of Mary Jane specifically, the idea of a Spider-Man movie without Mary Jane at all almost seems ridiculous. But hey, don't worry Spidey fans... she'll be back for Spider-Man 4! Producer Todd Black recently told the NY Post [1] that Kirsten Dunst is

Cameron Has Her Friends and Costars to Keep Her Smiling

Cameron Diaz still had her sun-kissed Hawaiian glow at Stella McCartney's backyard screening of the environmental film Home in La on Friday night. She giggled with Liv Tyler and Rachel Zoe while other celebrities like Charlize Theron and Rosario Dawson posed for photographers. Cameron's been working hard lately promoting My Sister's Keeper and recently talked about how her costars in the film helped her cope with her father's death. It could be tough to rehash the difficult time as she talks to the press, but it looks like the actress knows how to kick back and unwind with her girlfriends when she can. The Hobbit: Who will play Bilbo Baggins and how many films will there be?

7 June 2009 2:37 PM, PDT | From The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news

We've known for a while now that director Guillermo del Toro is hard at work on a big-screen adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit, with Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson serving as executive producer .

Beyond that, there have been lots of questions about casting and how many films will be made.

At one point Del Toro said they planned to turn The Hobbit into just one movie and then create a second film that fills in the undocumented 59 years between the end of that story and the start of The Fellowship of The Ring.

In some new interviews, Del Toro addresses the questions of casting and exactly how many Hobbit-related movies will be coming to the big screen.

Firstly, Guillermo (who also directed both Hellboy movies and Pan's Labyrinth) said they were very close to announcing the name of the actor to play Bilbo Baggins.

Potter's Radcliffe Advises Sex Scenes 'Tedious, Boring'

1 June 2009 4:34 PM, PDT | From TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news

”Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe, who by now has done enough of them, thinks sex scenes are boring. And, actress Liv Tyler is simply too embarrassed to watch her sex scenes. But UK actress Kiera Knightley is comfortable with them, if the scene requires it. And, "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens was open to the idea in a recent interview. The subject is a recurring one among Young Hollywood stars like Emma Thompson and even teen sensation Miley Cyrus. It’s a hurdle they may face, sooner rather than later. Veteran actress Kate Winslet did several nude scenes in her Oscar winning performance for “The Reader,” and it’s hard to see how the movie would have had the same dramatic impact without them. Still some veteran A-listers like actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep have never bared themselves in front of the cameras.
