Mira Sorvino Agrees To Union Square

25 November 2010 10:57 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Is it weird Mira Sorvino won an Oscar and people still think of her as Romy from Romy And Michele.s High School Reunion? I don.t think so, but then again, to me, Paul Newman will always be Reg from Slap Shot. You can.t change how people perceive you. That being said, you can continue to take risky, challenging movies and hope your work will stand for itself. According to Deadline, the former Woody Allen muse has agreed to star in indie director Nancy Savoca.s upcoming Union Square. You may remember Savoca as a force behind the made for HBO movie If These Walls Could Talk that saw Demi Moore play a 1950s woman trying to get an abortion. Union Square will follow two sisters, played by Sorvino and Emmy winner Tammy Blanchard, who reluctantly get together. One is ready to marry and one is ready for »

Mira Sorvino Moves To Union Square

24 November 2010 4:02 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

With America’s collective noggin now firmly in Thanksgiving mode, the news has slowed to a crawl. But there’s still time to report that Mira Sorvino has locked in a deal to star in Union Square, a new indie drama.Nancy Savoca co-wrote and will direct the film, which will also star Michael Rispoli, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Tammy Blanchard and Patti LuPone.Union Square sounds like it’s taking a page from Rachel Getting Married’s book – as the plot focuses on two sisters, one who seemingly has her life together and is about to get married, the other who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. But who wants to guess that the sibling on the eve of her nuptials will eventually find problems? There’s no word on when the film will get shooting, though given the apparently tiny nature of the production, it’ll probably kick off before Christmas arrives. »

Chicks of the Assimilated Animus

16 November 2010 8:21 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jung talks of the anima and animus as the unconscious's ego--a dark figure of our dreams--for men it's an elusive princess, devouring witch, beautiful maiden asleep in a block of ice; for women a werewolf lover, a dark demon wolf with big eyes all the better to drink your essence with, like Twilight. The animus is best exemplified in the Beauty and the Beast myth. The unassimilated animus is a wild beast, untamed and surly. The assimilated is tamed and 'absorbed' into the female consciousness, i.e. once the animus becomes a prince and not a beast, the woman starts to get bossy and surly herself!

Don't we see this all the time in marriages? Before the marriage the man is in charge, tall and dominating... sometime after the wedding the alchemical change occurs and the woman starts bossing him around, making important decisions. In my essay on the Twilight mythos, »

Sorvino Renews Calls To End Human Trafficking

19 October 2010 5:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino has renewed her call to end human trafficking, insisting American officials need to step up their efforts to break down the illegal slave trade.

The Mighty Aphrodite star has been involved with human rights organisation Amnesty International for many years and was invited to become a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations after starring in 2005 TV movie Human Trafficking.

Sorvino admits the project fuelled her interest in the cause and she has vowed to continue fighting to make sure the barbaric practice is stamped out.

She tells U.S. TV host Larry King, "I was originally Stop Violence against Women campaign ambassador for several years. And underneath that canopy of abuse to women, both domestically and internationally, it was the subject of human trafficking, and right as we were starting to explore and do events about it, and give speeches about it, I was offered the film Human Trafficking... And I decided to take it on because it was a way to marry my activist and my artistic interests.

"And I became very, very passionate about this particular cause... In almost all trafficking situations whether it be any kind of labour trafficking, slavery or sexual trafficking, and usually if it's a female trafficking victim, that person will be a victim of rape. Whether or not they are a sexually trafficked person.

"They are constantly kept under the threat of physical harm to themselves, the threat - very definite threat to their family... They stay in their trafficking situations to protect their families because, as one victim said to me here in the states, she said, 'It was all I had left to give. I knew I was keeping my family safe by staying there, by not running away. I knew if I tried to run away, he told me he would kill them'." »

Guillermo del Toro at Ciff 2010 -- photo by Nick Allen

This previous Friday night, the Chicago International Film Festival honored writer/director Guillermo del Toro during their “Cinema of the Americas Tribute.” Wholly worthy of such honor, del Toro has earned the title “visionary” with films like Hellboy, Mimic, The Devil’s Backbone, and Pan’s Labyrinth.

Delivering a speech in his honor was actor Ron Perlman, (Hellboy, FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,”) who also appeared on the red carpet for the event. I had the opportunity to speak to both.

Click Here for complete coverage of the Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff 2010)

First, Ron Perlman:

What would the horror world be without del Toro?

Not nearly as rich.

What have you learned as an actor while working with him?

She may be a veteran mother-of-three, but Mira Sorvino will forever try to live up to her own mother’s parenting example.

“My mother was a full-time stay-at-home mom, so I find it really, really guilt-making when I go and work,” the Like Dandelion Dust actress, 43, reveals in the Fall issue of Mom.

“She used to do treasure hunts in the back yard and write clues and hide things in trees and she made her own piñatas — and she’s not Mexican … I don’t always measure up to her standard, but I try.”

“I would die for my children. I would kill for my children if someone were trying to hurt them,” the actress, who plays a mother in her new film Like Dandelion Dust, tells People.

“I have become a very fierce mama bear, and I’d lay down my life in a heartbeat if it could save theirs.”

Olivier Martinez: Halle Berry hooks up with Kylie Minogue's ex

8 September 2010 11:01 AM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Halle Berry gets rid of one hot guy (Gabriel Aubrey) and promptly gets a new one. And predictably, the replacement is her costar.

In a scene that looked right out a romantic movie, Halle was spotted making out with her "Dark Tide" costar Olivier Martinez in a doorway in the Left Bank of Paris. They roamed a flea market hand-in-hand during the day and ate a romantic dinner at Casa Bini.

"It was the classic 'I'm going to kiss you here in a dark corner' move," an onlooker tells People of their back alley action.

The new couple has just finished shooting their action thriller about killer sharks in South Africa. Directed by John Stockwell, this one's about a diving instructor who returns to the ocean where she had a near fatal attack with a Great White Shark.

In our book, this movie already has three things going for it. »
