Battle of the Sexes

Emma Stone just won her first Oscar in February, and the “La La Land” actress may be in running for the 2018 Academy Awards as well. Fox Searchlight has announced an awards-friendly release date for Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton’s “Battle of the Sexes,” Deadline reports. The film will hit theaters September 22. Stone stars in the tennis comedy alongside her “Crazy Stupid Love” co-star Steve Carell.

The film chronicles the “legendary 1973 tennis match between ex-champ/hustler Bobby Riggs and world №1 Billie Jean King,” the source summarizes. The 29-year-old King handily defeated the 55-year-old Riggs in one of the most-watched sports events of all time.

Penned by Simon Beaufoy (“Slumdog Millionaire”), “Battle of the Sexes” co-stars Elisabeth Shue (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”), Alan Cumming (“The Good Wife”), Andrea Riseborough (“Bloodline”), Sarah Silverman (“Masters of Sex”), and Bill Pullman (“The Equalizer”).

Carell appeared in Faris and Dayton’s feature debut, 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” The comedy, which follows a dysfunctional family as they embark on a road trip to a beauty pageant, received four Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and took home two trophies. The collaborators’ critically acclaimed follow-up, 2012’s “Ruby Sparks,” was written by Zoe Kazan, who also starred in the unconventional romantic comedy about a writer (Paul Dano) who writes a love interest into existence (Kazan).

There have been previous films about the King-Riggs match, including Jane Anderson’s 2001 TV movie “When Billie Beat Bobby” starring Holly Hunter, and James Erskine and Zara Hayes’ 2013 documentary “The Battle of the Sexes.” The epic rivalry between King and Riggs will be depicted by Elizabeth Banks (“Pitch Perfect” franchise) and Paul Giamatti (“Billions”) in an upcoming HBO film, and serves as the inspiration behind “Balls,” an upcoming opera from composer Laura Karpman and librettist Gail Collins.

Emma Stone and Steve Carell’s Battle of the Sexes to be released in September

Fox has set a release date for the Emma Stone and Steve Carell-led biopic Battle of the Sexes, which will open on September 22, 2017.

The film will see Stone as tennis player Billie Jean King as she prepares for her intergender match against ex-champion Bobby Riggs. The 1973 match began a discussion on gender equality and became a big moment for the feminist movement.

The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs became the most watched televised sports event of all time. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With her husband urging her to fight for equal pay, the private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past. »

Fox Searchlight has given an awards season release date to “Battle of the Sexes,” starring Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. The film is scheduled to debut on Sept. 22.

Variety first reported in 2015 Stone was attached to the project. “Little Miss Sunshine” filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris directed from a script by Simon Beaufoy. Danny Boyle is producing under his Decibel Films banner along with Christian Colson and his company Cloud Eight.

Shooting began in April in Los Angeles. The competition between King and Riggs captured the public imagination in 1973, when the No. 2 ranked King — who was 29 — beat Riggs, a 55-year-old former Wimbledon champion.

New Piranha Movie Happening, Concept Art Unveiled

24 February 2017 4:04 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

There are no sea creatures that can match the terror that was permanently placed in moviegoers when Steven Spielberg made Jaws, but if anything were to come close, it might be Piranha. No, the Piranha franchise, which actually started as a spoof of Spielberg's classic shark thriller, has never quite been the critical darling and beloved blockbuster that the original Jaws was, but the series has persisted over the years and has provided some solid, if campy, sea creature horror. Now it looks like after a few years away, the Piranha franchise is ready to make a return to the big screen next year.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Producer Hisako Tsukaba is currently working on a new movie in the Piranha series that is set to be released at some point in 2018. The movie is titled Summer of the Piranha and is reportedly already in the pre-production stages in Japan. »
