Business and art often mix as well as oil and water in the world of making movies, and perhaps no statement makes that clearer than this statement by Morgan Creek CEO Jim Robinson to Deadline about the sale of the production company's library of films: "I’m selling the library strictly for economic reasons. It will go back into the company to fund more production. We have a number of properties that we are looking to move forward on." Some of those properties he's talking about? What does Pope Francis have to do to get you in a Fiat today? The 1990s comedy sequels that deserved better

22 September 2015 10:07 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Bill & Ted, Addams Family Values, Wayne's World 2 - the 1990s wasn't short of good comedy sequels. It's just not enough people watched them.

In recent times, Hollywood has enjoyed going back into the 1990s to come up with belated sequels to previous hit movies. So, we finally got Dumb & Dumber 2, for instance, whilst a third Clerks, a second Mallrats, a new Sister Act and a Naked Gun reboot are being cooked up somewhere. Further belated sequels? Zoolander 2 finally arrives next year, and Anchorman 2 celebrates, quietly, its second birthday this Christmas.

It was only at the end of the 1990s that comedy sequels suddenly really took off. There were exceptions beforehand of course, but few things raise the eyebrows of Hollywood high brass than lots of cash. This, whilst the enormous box office takings of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me were in part down to an utterly inspired marketing campaign, »

Jimmy Kimmel wants to know the specifics of how Donald Trump plans to make America great again. “The strangest thing about the Trump campaign being on top for a full month now is that apart from his plant to build a wall to keep the Mexicans out, we know absolutely nothing about what he plans to do as president,” the ABC late-night host said. West. Kilmer. Keaton. Clooney. Bale. Affleck. Brosnan? Speaking in an interview with Details, former 007 Pierce Brosnan revealed that he was once offered the chance to play The Caped Crusader for Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film.

At the time, Pierce Brosnan was one of a number of stars in line for the coveted part, rubbing shoulders with Mel Gibson – fresh off the Mad Max trilogy – Tom Selleck, Charlie Sheen, Kevin Costner and Bill Murray. The stories behind TV production company closing logos

10 August 2015 10:59 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Grr, argh. Sit, Ubu, sit. I made this! What’s the story behind the production company tags added onto our favourite TV shows?

Closing logos have evolved into a TV production company’s tiny stamp of individuality. They’re a single snippet of screen time not at the mercy of network notes, audience feedback or sponsorship concerns.

A closing tag doesn’t need to sell a show, tell a story, or lasso an audience back for the next episode. It’s simply a signature, a few seconds entirely belonging to the creatives, to do with what they will.

As such, closing logos are as self-indulgent or esoteric as the production company wills them. They’re perhaps the only place in television production where in-jokes, family photos, personal homages (or extended rants in the case of one comedy producer) and kid-drawn scribbles usually found taped to the fridge door are entirely welcome. »
