The 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2010

31 December 2009 9:38 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

For many people, a new year means a time for new habits, resolutions, and fresh starts.  For myself though, it’s always been about one thing and one thing only:  365 days of brand-new films!

And of course, Hollywood being Hollywood, there’s the usual litany of sequels, super-hero spectacle, remakes, and state-of-the-art Hollywood summer craziness filled with all manner of digital monsters and explosions.  But there’s also new films from Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and - most intriguing of all - a ballet thriller from Darren Aronofsky.  Come on, admit it - you know you got excited when you heard the words “ballet thriller!”  All that, and we also see the return of Michael Douglas in his seminal role as Gordon Gecko.

Read on after the jump for my list of the ten films that - for reasons both good and bad - I’m most looking forward to seeing in the new year. »

2010 movie preview: 15 films you probably didn’t know you should be excited for

29 December 2009 9:37 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

A few days back John made the rather excellent list of 15 films that are sure to get audience’s pulses racing with anticipation for next year. Yet away from the marketing hype, pre-release publicity and away from the A-List names there are a slew of movies that, whilst not overly commercially minded, look like they may just be delightful. Some might be sleeper hits, some might not. Either way here is a list of 15 films, five each from the U.S., Asia and Europe, you may not have heard of to look out for next year:

The United States

The Fighter

Perhaps tainted by Christian Bale’s lost lustre or director David O. Russell’s reputation, The Fighter is receiving much less attention than I initially envisioned. Mark Wahlberg is to star in the lead role of professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward with Bale as his half brother. The Fighter »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Clint Mansell Has Ambitious Plans for the Black Swan Soundtrack… And How About Source Code?

26 December 2009 4:04 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

At the very least, each of Clint Mansell's movie scores strengthens the film it accompanies and at the very best, his music works extraordinarily both in the picture and as standalone listening. With Lux Aeterna, his most astonishing cue from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack, he managed to write one of the most beloved, discussed and arguably overplayed pieces of film music in the medium's entire history. After a career in the band Pop Will Eat Itself, Mansell's first two scores were for Darren Aronfosky's Pi and Requiem for a Dream, and he's gone on to write the music for every one of Aronfosky's films since. That will continue, unsurprisingly but still thankfully, with Aronfosky's next movie, Black Swan. If you're not up on Black Swan, and perhaps know it only as the film where Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are going to have an 'intense' bedroom scene, »

Talent 2010: The actress, Imogen Poots

25 December 2009 4:00 PM, PST | The Independent | See recent The Independent news »

Imogen Poots is all set to build on the success of her recent releases Me and Orson Welles and Cracks and become the most talked-about young British acting talent of 2010. The 20-year-old has been on the fast track to success ever since she was cast as the younger version of Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta as a sprightly 15-year-old. She was mesmerising in the apocalyptic sci-fi sequel 28 Weeks Later and then showed she could do costume drama in Miss Austen Regrets. The actress seemed perfectly suited for a period piece, with her classic beauty, wavy blonde hair, high cheekbones and cat-like eyes. »

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus: A Little Too Crazy

25 December 2009 10:30 AM, PST | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Not to be confused with that movie starring Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman (Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium), The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is perhaps best known as late actor Heath Ledger’s final role. You may recall that his death occurred during production, in which case Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law stepped in to finish his role. The good news is that the transition from actor to actor is virtually seamless and works within the story’s construction perfectly. The bad news? The film is still a bit of an all-over-the-map mess. To hear why, just read more. The movie follows Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), an immortal man who runs a circus-style sideshow where he invites people into his imagination via a mirror. Once there, the participants must make a choice - will they side with the devil-like Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), or are they good at heart »

Multiple Personality Disorder Report

#1 James Cameron to redo “The Fantastic Voyage

Now don’t be getting too excited because there’s no news that Cameron will direct the project but Variety does report that Cameron is producing the film and from what I can gather, the project (and a few more to follow) is an effort to make use and money from the expensive technology he spent years prepping for Avatar. It’s a great opportunity to remake this sci-fi classic but with “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” writer Shane Salerno on board to adapt the original story, I can’t say I’m all that excited.

#2 Natalie Portman starring in “Pride Prejudice and Zombies”

This seems like an odd pairing but Portman does have the looks for period drama though I’m not sure what possessed her to agree to a period piece about a man searching for love amidst a zombie outbreak. Portman »

Jude Law Denies 'Thor' Casting Rumor

22 December 2009 9:44 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Sherlock Holmes" arrives in theaters this week, pairing "Iron Man 2" star Robert Downey Jr. with actor Jude Law — who remains a far less prominent star in the comic book movie world than his co-star, despite his comics cred-inspiring ink. (He has a tattoo of Rorschach from "Watchmen.") However, an October rumor seemed to indicate that Law was on track to change all that with a role in "Thor" alongside Robert DeNiro.

Unfortunately, the rumor turned out to be just that, as Law explained to MTV News during the recent "Sherlock Holmes" red carpet event.

"Was there?" said Law when told there was a widely circulated rumor tagging him for a role in Kenneth Branagh's film about the Marvel god of thunder.

When asked whether he'd ever been approached about a role in the film, the actor answered, "No, I had no idea!"

Discuss: Is the R-Rated Hit-Girl 'Kick-Ass' Trailer a Little Disturbing?

22 December 2009 7:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you're still not sold on the subversive superhero movie Kick-Ass, even after hearing the "bananas" buzz out of this year's Butt-Numb-a-Thon, maybe a new trailer spotlighting the character Hit-Girl will entice you. You just might not want to admit that you got excited for a movie based on a spot focusing on a little girl who says the f-word and the c-word nonchalantly and shoots bad guys in the cheek and chops off their legs with even less of a thought.

Really, who is this trailer for? People who thought Natalie Portman wasn't young enough, foul-mouthed enough or violent enough in Leon (The Professional)? Guys who went to see Kill Bill Vol. 1 for the meteor hammer-wielding schoolgirl? Nostalgic audiences who will be too busy enjoying the Banana Splits theme song to realize what they're watching?

Okay, so it's all over-the-top enough to get the simple defense, "dude it's just a comic book movie. »
