2010 in Reviews: 60 movies we watched and rated this year!

31 December 2010 8:04 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

[Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]

Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.

I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.

I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Robert De Niro Tops List of Most Movie Deaths

27 December 2010 4:16 PM, PST | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

ChaCha put together a list of actors who have died the most in their movies. Topping the list is Robert De Niro with fifteen deaths, including ones in "Cape Fear," "Frankenstein" and "Jackie Brown." Bruce Willis also made the list and was actually killed twice by his ex-wife Demi Moore in "Mortal Thoughts" and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Brad Pitt is in top ten as well, but his deaths are a bit odd. He died in "Cool World," but returned as an animated character. He died in "Fight Club," but never actually existed. And he died in "Meet Joe Black," but came back as Death. The list is far from perfect, since it doesn't include Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed, Titanic, Blood Diamond), Kevin Spacey (Se7en, American Beauty, La Confidential), Samuel L. Jackson (Deep Blue Sea, True Romance, Jurassic Park), or John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Face/Off, The Punisher). Plus, there »

Most Hollywood A-listers have taken on a variety of roles to reach the top of the Tinseltown totem pole. Some actors have played the hero and others have made a career out of portraying the despicable villain, but the good guys and bad guys share one common trait: many of them have died multiple times in their movies. ChaCha.com has gifted us with an answer to a question that may be plaguing the most morbid of cinephiles -- which actors have died the most during their careers? A nifty little diagram -- which you can check out in the gallery below -- maps out how many times 15 of Hollywood's most killed stars have met their maker, along with an interesting fact about each one.

The first images of Tom Hardy (Inception, Bronson) have leaked online from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on Just Jared showing Hardy with some old school, betting shop type tattoos and blonde locks.

The film stars Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and is based on the 1974 novel, by John Le Carre, of the same name, where;

In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6′s echelons.

(imdb.com Source)

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has previously been adapted as a BBC TV mini-series back in 1979 with the fantastic Alec Guinness as George Smiley now played by Gary Oldman in the updated instalment.  One of the reasons that this is an important film to look out for in 2011 (and not just because of Tom Hardy) as it is directed by Tomas Alfredson »

New Images Of Tom Hardy From Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

23 December 2010 8:49 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Tom Hardy scuzzes up real nice, as proven by some new images from the set of Tomas Alfredson’s (“Let The Right One In”) “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”. Covered in homemade/prison looking tattoos and topped off with a dirty blond wig, Hardy plays a British operative named Ricki Tarr in this adaptation of John Le Carre’s 1974 spy novel. The film tells the story of George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman), as he roots out a mole inside of British intelligence. “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is the first book in Le Carre’s “Karla Trilogy”. In 1979 the BBC adapted the book into a seven-part series starring Alec Guinness as George Smiley, and BBC Radio 4 has adapted the book, twice, once in 1988, and again in 2009. In addition to Hardy and Oldman, the cast of “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” includes Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Stephen Graham. Here are the pictures via Collider. »

One of the films that's already being highly anticipated for next year is director Tomas Alfredson's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. First Look at Tom Hardy in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

23 December 2010 7:07 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The first images of Tom Hardy on the set of Tomas Alfredson's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy landed online recently.  Sporting a slew of ill-conceived tattoos and a blonde wig, Hardy looks to be settling in nicely to the role of British operative Ricki Tarr.  Based on the 1974 John Le Carre spy novel of the same name, the film tells the story of George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman) and his attempt to uncover a mole within British Intelligence.  Although I've never read the novel, given its solid cast (mentioned below) and its status as Alfredson's follow-up to the terrific Let the Right One In, this project is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated for 2011. Hit the jump to check out the set images for yourself.  In addition to Hardy and Oldman, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy also stars Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Stephen Graham. »

Choose The 1998 Academy Award Winners!

23 December 2010 6:30 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

I love that a heated discussion over Titanic’s infamous Oscar sweep of 1998 has already begun over at Laurent’s excellent retrospective. I guess it’s just the nature of this particular film. There is something about Titanic that hits a raw nerve in people and they feel a need to defend/criticize it so passionately.

As it happens, I fall in the ‘unconditional love’ category and I’m not afraid to admit it. To this day I have a passion for Titanic, a film that so perfectly matches what a glorious, spellbinding, big spectacle romance against an historic backdrop should be, and those films are so rare, especially when they are made with such precise and meticulous detail from James Cameron.

We shouldn’t be embarrassed over how much we loved Titanic in the 90′s. We should embrace it. So as our third ‘Choose The Winners’ article, we are »

Tom Hardy Set Pics from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

23 December 2010 3:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Tomas Alfredson’s forthcoming adaptation of John LeCarre’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has some amazing talent in front of and behind the camera, with Alfredson on a high from his 2008 film Let the Right One In joining with Peter Morgan to adapt the spy classic, made famous in the late Seventies with an iconic performance from Alec Guinness.

The cast list reads like a wish-list and today snaps of Tom Hardy appeared on the net and it’s a very different look to his suave Inception persona. Appearing with Hardy in this post-Cold War thriller is Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, the ever wonderful Mark Strong and Moriarty in waiting Jared Harris. The film is set to appear on the 16th of September in the UK.

Here are the pics,

Haberturk (via Coming Soon) had these and there are a few more if you’d care to click. »
