Behind Hollywood's Closed Doors, A-List Stars Are Playing Dungeons & Dragons

19 July 2016 6:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Vin Diesel plays it. So do Dwayne Johnson, Drew Barrymore, Stephen Colbert, Mike Myers and Jon Favreau, among other bold-face names. Some even built their careers by playing it. “I played compulsively for years,” admits D.B. Weiss, the 45-year-old Game of Thrones showrunner, who says infatuation with Dungeons & Dragons during his teenage years in Chicago was the perfect preparation for his current job. “It was my first experience with world-building,” he explains. “You’d see hundreds of ‘what if’ scenarios play out in real time as players attempted to achieve their various goals

‘Austin Powers’ Is a Dramatic Man of Mystery in Gritty Trailer Recut (Video)

27 June 2016 8:03 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

A new “Austin Powers” trailer makeover proves Mike Myers‘ goofy international man of mystery can be just as dramatic as Daniel Craig‘s James Bond. All he needed was the right music. The fan-made “modern trailer” recuts scenes from the comedic trilogy with a dramatic score, action scenes, and intense dialogue, like the moment Powers confronts his father. Rob Lowe on Grinding On After ‘The Grinder,’ and Why It Still Deserves Awards Love (Consider This)

20 June 2016 12:09 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The funny thing about the Emmys is how long the campaign season actually runs. Even though the first round of voting takes place in June (with nominations announced on July 14), the PR machines kick in as early as February – for awards that aren’t announced until September 18. That means some Emmy “For Your Consideration” interviews are conducted long before stars and producers learn the fate of their shows.

Such was the case of Rob Lowe and his exquisite experiment, “The Grinder.” Indiewire spoke with the talented thespian a month before Fox axed the critically-hailed comedy, and — while we spoke again for the season finale — what he had to say at the time is relevant to what happened to “The Grinder.” We talked to him again after news of the cancellation hit, and the below interview represents a lightly edited transcript of those two conversations.

Review: Shrek Anniversary Edition

20 June 2016 11:41 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Hard to believe it was just fifteen years ago that DreamWorks introduced us to Shrek. In an attempt to further distance itself from Disney’s fairy tale-driven output, they came up with a contemporary satire that used the very same fairy tales and nursery rhymes but turned them all on their heads with equal doses of charm and cheek.

The first film earned an astonishing $484.4 million worldwide and have us three more films and numerous spinoffs. It helped make gross cool and gave us a delightful soundtrack album with memorable renditions of pop tunes, notably “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.

20th Century Home Entertainment is celebrating with the release of Shrek Anniversary Edition, a single Blu-ray disc containing the film and a bunch of bonus features. There is also the four-film box set with even more green-skinned grossness.

But it all comes down to this first feature, which earned the premiere »

New Chapters Planned For The Shrek Franchise

16 June 2016 3:19 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The quest to improve the fortunes of DreamWorks Animation continues, with news that the purchase of the company – by Comcast’s NBC Universal – includes plans to wring more money from the Shrek franchise. NBCU will hand over a reported $3.8 billion for the struggling studio, and will quickly move to put more Shrek chapters into production.

The Shrek franchise launched in 2001 and was immediately embraced by audiences for its wonderful spin on fairytales, its great vocal performances and its heartwarming script. With Mike Myers providing the voice for the titular ogre, supported by Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy, among others, the concept became a firm fan favourite, to the tune of $484.4 million in box office receipts. Shrek 2 in 2004 built on that momentum, earning a total of $920 million in theatres.

This proved to be the peak for the franchise, however, as 2007’s Shrek The Third, and 2010’s Shrek Forever After posted diminishing returns of $799 million and $753 million respectively. Even the Shrek spinoff movie, 2011’s Puss In Boots, couldn’t pull the franchise out of its downward spiral – earning $555 million in total. Individually, these films and their earnings are not failures by any means – but in the context of the franchise as a whole, the numbers indicate dwindling interest.

So, it is, perhaps, surprising that the new owners of DreamWorks Animation might seek to invest further in a worn-out property, rather than muster up an original idea. But, this is where NBCU’s existing relationship with Illumination Entertainment comes into play. Speaking at the Guggenheim Tmt Symposium in New York recently, NBCU Chief Executive Steve Burke explained that Illumination producer Chris Meledandri (the Despicable Me franchise) will be helping breathe new life into Shrek.

“He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek.”

Whether this proves to be a foolhardy pursuit remains to be seen, but there is some logic to consolidating a fledgling business venture using existing brand recognition. Hopefully, going forward, any new Shrek sequels will bolster DreamWorks Animation enough to allow it to come up with something fresh and new sooner, rather than later. »

17 Movie Scenes With Pizza, From “Tmnt” to “Toy Story” (Videos)

5 June 2016 12:29 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

You’ll be hard pressed to find a franchise that has found such longevity in such a ridiculous concept as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” The “Tmnt” series is loaded with bizarre quirks, with one of the most famous being the turtles’ undying love for pizza. It’s one of the most well-known examples of this foodstuff in modern cinema, but it’s far from the only one. Arguably the most iconic moment in Mike Myers‘ career is his lampooning of product placement deals in “Wayne’s World,” a scene that starts with him taking a nice bite of some Pizza Hut with the logo. »

Terminal Casts Simon Pegg And Mike Myers Opposite Margot Robbie

24 May 2016 2:52 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Noir thriller Terminal may have already entered production in Hungary, but The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Vaughn Stein’s actioner has made room for a few last-minute cast additions.

Among them is Star Trek Beyond alum Simon Pegg and Mike Myers, who have boarded the in-development feature in undisclosed roles, joining fellow newcomers Mike Myers, Max Irons and Dexter Fletcher of Kick-Ass fame. They now round out an ensemble anchored by Suicide Squad‘s Margot Robbie, who assumes the role of a “dynamic woman” capable of sparking an international game of cat-and-mouse with two hitmen.

Picking up arms as that pair of hired guns are Fletcher and Irons, who “embark on a borderline suicide mission for a mysterious employer and a large paycheck. Along the way, the unlikely pair discover that a dynamic woman named Annie (Robbie) may be more involved than they had originally suspected.”

‘Austin Powers 4’ may still happen, says director

23 May 2016 11:33 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The last Austin Powers movie, Austin Powers in Goldmember was released fourteen years ago, and while we all thought that the franchise was officially done following a very successful trilogy, it seems that a fourth film may still happen.

The films’ series producer Jay Roach commented to Larry King that an Austin Powers 4 is still being considered.

Here’s what he had to say: “You know, Mike Myers and I talk about it every time we get together. I would say it’s in a latent phase right now, but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure. Mike gave me the break of a lifetime in letting me direct [Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery] so I’m always good to go.”

Wow. The last we heard was that a potential plot man actually revolve around Dr. Evil and his son Scott (Seth Green) and would »
