Interview: on the Ghostly Costume Design of "The Beguiled"

 by Nathaniel R

The costume designer Stacey Battat has, to date, worked mostly in female-oriented contemporary indies. That's quite a perfect niche to build a design career from. Or at least it is when the women who've visually helped define your early work are such stylish talented icons themselves. Battat first made her mark on two Parker Posey features in the late Aughts (Broken English, Happy Tears). Soon after she was deep in the Julianne Moore business (Still Alice, Freeheld, What Maisie Knew). Other credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her and Him and Mozart in the Jungle but it's been her partnership with writer/director Sofia Coppola that's come to define her young career.

The two began working together on the La dreamy Somewhere (2010). Battat proved invaluable to all the fashiongasms of Coppola's arguably most underrated feature The Bling Ring (2013). Then came an atypical challenge: a forgotten girls

To answer that question, we called in the authorities: Celebrity stylists. We asked the experts behind some of the most memorable looks of the year for their honest thoughts

'The Hours': THR's 2002 Review

'The Hours': THR's 2002 Review
On Dec. 27, 2002, The Hours, starring Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman, opened in limited release. The film went on to be nominated for nine honors at the 75th Academy Awards, winning best actress for Kidman. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:

The Hours deserves the title "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" even more than the Almodovar film. This movie meticulously intertwines a single day in the lives of three women in different eras, each of whom is suffocating from an unnamable depression. The movie also is something of an A-list "cook-off" among three...

Philip Seymour Hoffman's Partner Mimi O’Donnell Opens Up About Late Actor's Drug Addiction
Philip Seymour Hoffman's partner of over 14 years remembers when she first noticed that something was "brewing" with the actor.

Mimi O’Donnell opens up in a moving essay for Vogue's January issue about first meeting Hoffman at a theater in New York City in 1999 and the beautiful love story that ensued, which included the two parenting three children, Cooper, 14, Tallulah, 11 and Willa, 9. "When I look back at how close we all were, I wonder whether Phil somehow knew that he was going to die young," she reflects. "He never said those words, but he lived his life as if time was precious."

After being sober for well over a decade, O'Donnell says Hoffman was faced with a lot of trials all at once, which led to him returning to drugs and ultimately dying from a heroin overdose in early February 2014 at the age of 46.

"His longtime therapist died of cancer, which was devastating
