It's Madonna's birthday!! Chris Feil looks back at one of her biggest soundtracks...
By the mid-90s, musicals were all but dead, even though Disney created their own resurgence in animated form. Madonna’s career however was always heading toward reviving it: she constantly reinvented the game for the music video and her Breathless Mahoney songstress was Dick Tracy’s genre flirtation device. With her divisive performance in Evita, she brought the cinematic musical back into the popular culture and delivered a hit soundtrack in the process.
And I should qualify that for emphasis: a hit soundtrack to a quasi-opera about propaganda and Argentine political figures when the popular music landscape highlighted Alanis, Tupac, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Madonna did that in arguably the least accommodating musical or cinematic climate, and perhaps only Madonna could have done it. Like it or not, much of the film’s success (even »

With just a few weeks to go before the kickoff of football season, advertisers may be questioning whether primetime NFL games can still score as many marketing touchdowns as it has in the past.
A Variety survey of commercial-ratings projections for the 2017-18 broadcast-network TV season finds that ad buyers believe fewer people than last season will watch commercials during such primetime stalwarts as NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and the “Thursday Night Football” broadcasts on both NBC and CBS. To be sure, the games remain TV’s top draw, with higher ratings expected for football than almost anything else on next season’s grid. But NFL games are proving just as vulnerable to audience erosion as their scripted counterparts. Advertisers’ commercial ratings predictions are culled by using estimates from three top media-buying agencies, which negotiate prices for and placement of billions of dollars in TV commercials each year.

Sinéad O’Connor achieved pop culture immortality with a soulful cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U” that built on the pain and vulnerability of Prince’s original, but the tears shed in the iconic video weren’t just for show. The ethereal voice and wounded eyes masked a past marred by child abuse, incarcerations, and tragedy, and those inner demons followed her through the gilded door of fame and haunt her to this day.
They ultimately led her to a New Jersey Travelodge, where she lived a solitary existence away from family in her native Ireland, whom she claims couldn’t cope with her mental illnesses. »

Growing up in Oakland, Calif., Zendaya knew from an early age that she wanted to be an actress. But her contributions to Hollywood aren’t limited to starring in the Disney Channel sitcom “K.C. Undercover,” where she portrays a savant daughter in a family of spies. She also produces the show, has emerged as a millennial fashion icon, sings, dances (as seen on “Dancing With the Stars”) and manufactures her own line of clothes for young people.
Branching out into movies was more daunting. “There were a lot of opportunities that weren’t really what I wanted to do,” says Zendaya, who is 20. “I think a lot of people look at me in a certain way because I’ve been on the Disney Channel a long time.”
Indeed, it’s hard out there for a Disney star. Many of them, in a hurry to grow up too fast, crash and burn, while »

Simply titled Linda and Monica, the film will explore their rollercoaster friendship, which came to an abrupt and public end when it thrust Lewinsky’s affair with then-President Clinton into the national spotlight.

Bobby Moynihan may be moving on from Saturday Night Live, but he's still happy to talk about what it was like to live his "life's dream." The star appeared during the TV Critics' Association summer press tour to promote his new CBS series, Me, Myself, & I, in which he plays the present day 40 year-old version of a character who's also played by John Larroquette and Jack Dylan Grazer, and spoke a bit about what it was like to be a primetime player during on hell of an eventful year, before and after the unexpected election of Donald Trump. Bobby Moynihan came to TCA to talk about his new CBS comedy Me, Myself & I, but, understandably, took a lot of Saturday Night Live questions. “I'm an unabashed fan of SNL and would have stayed there forever and ever,” Moynihan acknowledged. “The day you get SNL you start worrying about your exit from SNL; it was always on my mind. It was 13 years of getting it, and then, one day you get it” and then you start thinking ‘This is my life's dream, what am I going to do after… »

Too Hollywood for art houses and too art house for Hollywood, iconoclastic French filmmaker Luc Besson has always had to blaze his own trail. Unwilling — or unable — to compromise from the very start (his debut feature was a dialogue-free post-apocalyptic drama about a waterless future where it occasionally rains fish), Besson continues to offset his pigheadedness with his passion. He eventually got so sick of looking for support that he launched his own production company, EuropaCorp, which has become one of the most profitable in all of Europe by churning out the kind of carnivalesque shlock that made its founder so famous in the first place. Besson may not have directed the likes of “Taken,” “Lock-Out,” and “Colombiana,” but his fingerprints are all over them.
