When “Patti Cake$” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, it was heralded as an “8 Mile” for 2017, bolstered by stellar breakout performances from newcomer Daniel Macdonald and powerhouse singer Bridget Everett. After a delayed release, Geremy Jasper’s rousing debut will finally hit theaters this weekend. Fox Searchlight released a zippy music video to remind viewers why the New Jersey-set underdog tale is the freshest thing since Tony Soprano.

International Justice League Poster Keeps Superman In The Shadows

12 August 2017 2:07 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

For a figure that has been largely absent from the Justice League marketing blitz hitherto, Superman has caused an awful lot of debate online.

Those who are fully up-to-date with the DC Extended Universe will know that Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel died in the battle against Doomsday at the tail end of Batman V Superman, leaving the world to fall into disarray without its untainted beacon of hope leading by example. Crime rates are through the roof, and to make matters worse, Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader has been totally absent from Metropolis and Gotham City. Or has he?

To prepare for the oncoming Steppenwolf, the Dark Knight and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman have been busy tracking down the remaining metahumans – namely Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg – to mount a defense against Ciaran Hinds’ alien entity and his army of winged Parademons. IndieWire Fall Film Festival Wish List: The 58 Movies We Want to See Most

“Dunkirk” aside, deep summer looks like a fallow season for major films — but appearances are deceiving. This is perhaps their most-essential moment on the movie calendar, as it’s when distributors huddle, haggle, and negotiate to determine which movies will head for the almighty awards-season launch festivals of Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York.

From the festivals’ perspectives, they’re vying for the starriest red-carpet gala world premieres. (The exception is Telluride, which doesn’t have to vie; it gets to cherry pick its impeccably curated four-day Labor Day Weekend selection in secret.) Ahead of next week’s rollout of announcements, we called around for intel on what we can expect to see.

Justice League Villain Actor Never Met the Main Cast of Heroes

11 July 2017 10:50 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in November, Warner Bros.' highly-anticipated Justice League added the talented British actor Ciaran Hinds as iconic villain Steppenwolf. While not much has been revealed about this character, the actor revealed in a new interview that, since he did all of his work in motion capture, he never got a chance to meet any of the cast members in Justice League. Here's what he had to say.

"No, I don't know whether they're all afraid to come and meet me. No, no they weren't, really. Because it's imaginary, you do it with green screen. That was another challenge, you could say, yeah. But it was quite fun. And they're very encouraging in what you do, suggesting 'Over here, look over there, imagine that, do this here, they're coming at you now.'"

Ciaran Hinds made these revelations during The Michael Hill Show on BBC, although he wouldn't divulge any specifics about the story, »

‘The Big Sick’ and ‘The Beguiled’ Rescue Indie Box Office, Top All 2017 Specialty Openers

25 June 2017 10:45 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Things are looking up at the specialty box office as two festival hits, Sundance breakout “The Big Sick” (Amazon/Lionsgate) and Sofia Coppola’s Cannes director-winner “The Beguiled” (Focus Features) both beat all the 2017 limited openings to date. With $87,000 and $60,000 per theater averages respectively, they both accomplished something only one platform film (“Cafe Society”) achieved all last summer. And they did so the same weekend in some of the same theaters.

This shows that core specialty audiences are starving for cinematic nourishment they aren’t getting from mainstream studio fare.

The two new films join “Beatriz at Dinner” (Roadside Attractions), which expanded well in its third week. A box office rebound for specialized non-mass-audience film is finally under way.
