Pixar turned to female exployees to make sure 'Inside Out' rang true

27 May 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

My first trip to Pixar’s Emeryville campus was 13 years ago. That alone was enough to give me pause when I was invited to the “Inside Out” press day. I’ve done it. I’ve taken the tour. I’ve seen the campus. I’ve met the artists and I’ve seen their amazing work spaces and I’ve had a chance to walk through pretty much every department. I remember standing outside the server room my first time up, looking in at the brain of this remarkable company, amazed at how those racks of black technology represented this collision of all this amazing human artistry. My other hesitation, honestly, was because we were told that we’d be seeing “part” of the movie. I’ve grown wary over the years of seeing movies in chunks because you can’t really react in any meaningful way since you’re not seeing something that’s complete. »

The 57 Greatest Westerns Ever, Ranked

26 May 2015 2:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

It's fitting that Clint Eastwood and John Wayne both have the same birthday week. (Wayne, who died in 1979, was born May 26, 1907, while Eastwood turns 85 on May 31). After all, these two all-American actors' careers span the history of that most American of movie genres, the western.

Both iconic actors were top box office draws for decades, both seldom stretched from their familiar personas, and both played macho, conservative cowboy heroes who let their firearms do most of the talking. Each represented one of two very different strains of western, the traditional and the revisionist.

As a birthday present to Hollywood's biggest heroes of the Wild West, here are the top 57 westerns you need to see.

57. 'Meek's Cutoff' (2010)

Indie filmmaker Kelly Reichardt and her frequent leading lady, Michelle Williams, are the talents behind this sparse, docudrama about an 1845 wagon train whose Oregon Trail journey goes horribly awry. It's an intense »

It’s here, dear readers, I’m on vacation! I’ll be out of town for the next couple weeks, and in order to not deprive you of Trailer Trashin’, I’ve written four columns that will make their way to you over the next week or so, covering four of the biggest trailers that dropped in the later part of April. Third of these is the teaser trailer for next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Premise: Two years after the end of Man of Steel (2013), Superman (Henry Cavill) has taken a place among society as an icon and hero and has made the world safer to live in, but many distrust his altruism due to remembering the destruction from his battle in Metropolis, the foremost being corporate mogul and prominent Metropolis citizen Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Every Secret Thing movie review: skeletons in the heart

17 May 2015 8:35 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

A slow burn mystery in which the secrets aren’t so much about the crimes it explores but truths of women’s emotional lives that are too often ignored. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Mere weeks after two teenaged girls are released after seven years in juvenile detention for the horrific kidnap and killing of a baby, another little girl — one who bears a striking resemblance to the dead child — goes missing. Did they commit another murder? (Did they even both commit the first crime? Each is still placing all the blame entirely on the other.) Or does their small upstate New York town merely want this new kidnapping to be their doing?

Every Secret Thing Review

16 May 2015 10:02 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The crime happened in a place called Orangetown, yet in its aftermath, the town was shaded with grey. An infant rocking in her stroller outside on a balmy day was snatched, randomly. The culprits were two pre-teen girls who then tried to raise the child in secret. The baby was the granddaughter of the town’s first African-American judge. The young thieves didn’t last long and authorities promptly arrested them. However, mere weeks after the suspects – the heavy-set Alice (Danielle Macdonald) and the introverted Ronnie (Dakota Fanning) – are both 18 and out of juvenile detention, a toddler that is a near mirror image of the infant snatched years earlier disappears.

This is the set-up for Every Secret Thing, an adaptation from Laura Lippmann’s 2004 paperback bestseller. The mystery is notable for boasting a terrific collection of actresses in front of the camera – many of whom play autonomous, intriguing, flawed women – and behind the scenes. »
