Irritated moviegoer slugs obnoxious boor half his age. That's not the half of it.

23 May 2012 1:30 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

You know those empowering stories about a mild-mannered Average Joe who gets pushed and pushed and pushed, until he finally stands up and puts a couple of nudniks half his age in their place. This is not one of those stories.

On April 11, a man who was watching Titanic 3-D with his girlfriend in an AMC theater in Kent, Wash., finally lashed out at the group of loud ruffians sitting behind him. He punched one, bloodying his nose and knocking out a tooth. What prevents this story from being heroic in any way is the fact that the annoyed moviegoer »

Kristen Stewart Offered Role In Adrian Lyne’s ‘Back Roads’

20 May 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I spent this afternoon visiting Adrian Lyne‘s 9 1/2 Weeks (which I’d never seen before), so I suppose it’s only natural that casting news should now surface on the director’s first project since 2002′s Unfaithful. We’d previously speculated that Lyne would be following up his Richard Gere-Diane Lane romantic stinger by adapting John Grisham‘s The Associate, but this up-to-date Moviehole report suggests a very different novel-to-film undertaking — that of Tawni O’Dell‘s best-selling Back Roads, which he was rumored to take on in February of 2011.

The report speculates furthermore about the potential casting choices on Lynn‘s adaptation. Chloë Moretz — who’s currently on screens worldwide in Tim Burton‘s trivial Dark Shadows — is thought to already be on board with the project, while Kristen Stewart — who will soon appear in On the Road — has merely been offered an unspecified part.

Moretz‘s task, »

Cinema Verite | Review

12 May 2012 9:47 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Reality television is one of today’s most consumed forms of entertainment. One of the first forays into this genre was by PBS in 1973 with a show called An American Family. A small camera crew followed and documented the Loud family, a suburban middle-class family which seemed like the perfect average American family. PBS was hopeful audiences would tune in to see this revolutionary show and the rest is history. HBO Films released a TV movie called Cinema Verite, shedding light on the inner workings of the reality show’s production as well as its impact on pop culture.

Craig Gilbert (James Gandolfini) is a TV producer who selects the Loud family as the first American family to be filmed and documented for mass audiences to see. The family consists of the patriarch Bill (Tim Robbins), matriarch Pat (Diane Lane) and five children. The film shows the progression of the »

100 Facts on Universal Pictures' 100th Birthday

30 April 2012 11:28 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Today marks the 100th birthday of Universal Pictures and to celebrate the studio has released a list of 100 facts based on its first 100 years in existence. I have placed in bold some of the ones I found interesting as well as offered a selection of photo and video accompaniments here and there. 1. Universal Film Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in New York on April 30, 1912. Company legend says Carl Laemmle was inspired to name his company Universal after seeing "Universal Pipe Fittings" written on a passing delivery wagon. 2. The only physical damage made during the filming of National Lampoon's Animal House was when John Belushi made a hole in the wall with a guitar. The actual Sigma Nu fraternity house (which subbed for the fictitious Delta House) never repaired it, and instead framed the hole in honor of the film. 3. The working title for Et: The Extra Terrestrial was "A Boy's Life. »

Marian Salzman: The All-New American Family

30 April 2012 8:57 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

I remember being blown away by An American Family, which was a compelling and unorthodox documentary miniseries when it was made back in 1973 that showed the world the "typical" American family was anything but. Much time has passed since the Louds captivated our psyches (HBO recently did its own take on the wacky family, starring a rather fetching Diane Lane as the reluctant matriarch), so it's worth exploring what today's "average" American family looks like.

The new American family has taken all the old averages -- divorce rates, notions of wealth, favorite pastimes, social norms, etc. -- and dumped them on their perfectly coiffed heads. As psychologists try to make sense of our new normal and America's drastically altered demographics emerge ready for dissection, I've been keen to observe the impact of the redefined American family. Look no further than the recent political debates that had us discussing everything from »

Blu-ray Review: Diane Lane, James Gandolfini Shine in ‘Cinema Verite’

26 April 2012 4:49 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – HBO’s under-appreciated original movie recalls the moment when entertainment-seeking Americans averted their eyes from actors to their neighbors over the fence. Voyeurism had a new name, “cinema verite,” and one-time producer Craig Gilbert was determined to take it from art houses to small screens in homes across the country.

His target was the Loud family—a large and popular clan headed by the philandering Phil and the strong-willed Pat. Their son Lance was openly gay and his flamboyant exuberance was celebrated within the walls of his home but proved to alarm conservative viewers once it was broadcast on TV. The show resulted in the dissolution of Pat and Bill’s marriage, which was already ailing but wasn’t at all aided by Gilbert’s manipulative strategies to intensify their domestic conflict.

Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

The enormous timeliness of the subject matter makes “Cinema Verite” a fitting entry in HBO’s ever-impressive filmography. »

The Lucky One Movie Box Office: Zac Efron Third Best Opening

Taylor Schilling, Zac Efron, The Lucky One movie Think Like A Man Breaks Record At no. 2 this weekend, the Zac Efron romantic movie The Lucky One collected $22.51 million at 3,115 sites, averaging a good $7,137 per-location according to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Following a solid opening on Friday, The Lucky One was expected to gross somewhere between $22-25 million by Sunday evening. It failed to reach the higher mark because, unlike the weekend’s other top-twelve movies, it was down on Saturday (-6%). Best known as the leading lady in the nearly universally panned film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s libertarian novel Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, Taylor Schilling plays Zac Efron’s love interest in this nearly universally panned adaptation of Nicholas Sparks‘ tearjerking novel — The Lucky One has a dismal 16% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics. Zac Efron/The Lucky One Box Office: Overperforming

Zac Efron, The Lucky One Box Office: Think Like A Man Beats The Lucky One At no. 2 this weekend, The Lucky One is expected to take in $25 million (up from an estimated $22 million a few hours ago) after collecting $8.8 million at 3,115 sites (about 1,000 more than Think Like a Man) on Friday according to estimates found at Deadline.com. (This may sound bad for Schilling, but it's not. The Lucky One was a smart, high-profile career move following the Atlas Shrugged critical and box-office disaster.) The big blockbusters of summer 2013

17 April 2012 4:02 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises get set to do battle in the summer of 2012, what blockbusters are lining up for the summer of 2013…?

2012 marks, arguably, the biggest blockbuster showdown in recent years, with three major comic book franchises all going head to head. 2013 is a bit quieter in that regard, with just Superman and Iron Man, both with enough space to make a mark of their own.

In fact, the trend at the moment for summer blockbuster season 2013 is the end of the world to some degree. That’s along with the usual range of sequels, franchises and remakes. Here’s what’s currently in store, with dates based on Us planned release at the time of writing…

Blockbuster season 2013 kicks off not with a Marvel project, as has been the case the past few years, but with a Tom Cruise movie. Cruise, since »

Tonight I See My First Nicholas Sparks Adaptation in Eight Years

16 April 2012 11:15 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

For some reason I thought there had been more Nicholas Sparks adaptations since 2004's The Notebook. However, there have only been three -- Nights in Rodanthe with Richard Gere and Diane Lane, Dear John with Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried and The Last Song with lovebirds Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. Before that there was A Message in a Bottle with Kevin Costner, Robin Wright and Paul Newman and A Walk to Remember with Mandy Moore. Come to think of it, tonight, when I see The Lucky One, it won't only be my first Sparks adaptation since The Notebook, it will be my second Sparks adaptation altogether. The only reason I mention this is because I had such a strong, negative reaction to The Notebook it has taken me this long to gather my composure to the point I felt I could give another Sparks adaptation a shot. That film »

Adrian Lyne Up For The Associate

15 April 2012 10:51 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

This year marks a decade since Adrian Lyne last released a movie (that would be Diane Lane / Richard Gere / Olivier Martinez bonk triangle Unfaithful), but it hasn’t been for want of tying. He’s developed projects here and there through the years, but nothing has seemed to come of them until recently. And now he’s circling a likely prospect with John Grisham adaptation The Associate for Paramount. The legal drama, which finds a Yale graduate coerced into taking a job with a big law firm after he learns crucial information about a big case, has had its own stumbles on the road to the screen. Back in 2008, Shia Labeouf was attached to star as the main character, with Tony Scott showing interest in 2010, attracted by a script from William Monahan. But the deals never quite worked out.Enter Lyne, for whom “briefs” in a film usually means underwear and the shedding thereof. »

How to polish your screenplay: notes from Mahindra–Sundance Screenwriters Lab

12 April 2012 10:39 PM, PDT | DearCinema.com | See recent DearCinema.com news »

Vikas Chandra was selected for the inaugural edition of Mumbai Mantra—Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in India for his script ‘Toothache’. He, along with seven other screenplay writers, participated in a 5 day- workshop in Lonavla. Vikas Chandra sums up his learning from the workshop in this article:

Your donkeys are not carrying enough load!

In the beginning I had no clue on how to prepare or even what to expect from the lab. Worse, I was gripped with the fear that in no time I would be exposed as a writer!

I expected to be bombarded with questions I had no answers to, at least not at that moment. With such apprehensions, I approached my first session, which was with Audrey Wells.

Thankfully – nothing of the above happened.

We started talking about the central character in my script. Why did I choose my protagonist? What do I like about her? »

Adrian Lyne May Direct the Adaptation of John Grisham’s The Associate

12 April 2012 9:49 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As the last movie he directed is one of my personal favorites (mostly because I'm in love with Diane Lane), I welcome the possibility of Adrian Lyne returning to the director's chair.  His last go round was in 2002's Unfaithful, for which Lane received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination.  Lyne is reportedly now in negotiations to direct the adaptation of John Grisham's The Associate for Paramount.  The twisting and turning plot follows a young lawyer who is blackmailed by a number of organizations who each have their own nefarious interests in mind.  The picture previously had Tony Scott attached to direct with Shia Labeouf starring and Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing.  Only di Bonaventura remains attached. Hit the jump for more. Variety reports that Lyne is in talks to direct The Associate from a script originally drafted by William Monahan. Scott and Labeouf had dropped out of the »
