Directed by: William Friedkin
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Thomas Haden Church
Rating: Nc-17
Release Date: July 27, 2012
Trailer Score: 8/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Where is one to begin with this little piece of southern madness? There’s the Nc-17 rating, the fact that it is William Friedkin’s first film since Bug (a polarizing film, but one I love), Matthew McConaughey looking perfectly cast, and someone getting their head bashed in by a can of pumpkin pie filling. What? Nobody said Killer Joe was going to be classy.
One of the quotes used here mentions that the film is funny, something I hope proves true. There are flashes – “That’s not appropriate dinner conversation, Dottie” – but not much. I imagine there will be more pitch black humor once we get a chance to see things play out in context.
Friedkin got fantastic performances from Michael Shannon and Ashley Judd in Bug, »

Back in the late 90s, in what you might remember as his "Ashley Judd epoch," Morgan Freeman played the detective Alex Cross twice, in Kiss the GIrls and Along Came A Spider (which didn't in fact star Judd, but for some reason includes her in my brain). In those films Cross was. well, he was Morgan Freeman, the older voice of wisdom who you trust to handle about anything. But in the upcoming I, Alex Cross, Summit was looking for someone to play Cross in his younger years, searching for the man who killed his wife. After eyeing Idris Elba briefly, Summit decided the man who could convey Cross's strength, vulnerability, and expert detective skills was. Tyler Perry. As hard as it seems to believe, Perry is preparing to star in a film he neither wrote nor directed-- it won't even have his name in front of the title, »

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen the Missing series finale and intend to, stop reading now.
Missing’s 10-episode first season, which became its only season, ended with a rollercoaster hour that gave us a complete ride, then forgot to brake and sent us flying off the track. Dax emerged a hero, helping to break Paul (Sean Bean) out of a Bulgarian prison — though Paul did most of the work shooting his way out. Nice to see Sean Bean get physical. Dax wounded an escaped Violet during a woods chase — is there any kind of chase this series didn’t do? »

The filmmakers are also revealing for the first time that the much-anticipated project is intended to be a sequel to the renowned original. The filmmakers would reveal only that the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded.
The three-time Oscar-nominated Scott and his “Blade Runner” collaborator Fancher originally conceived of their 1982 classic as the first in a series of films incorporating the themes and characters featured in Philip K. Bubble shows are called that because things can really go either way -- for "Scandal," it meant a Season 2 renewal today, but for "Gcb" and a handful of others, it means cancellation.
ABC has officially canceled "Gcb," its Texas-centric freshman dramedy starring Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth and Leslie Bibb, along with three other dramas that were on major life support.
If you were holding out hope for lofty period-spy drama "Pan Am" or the "Paranormal Activity"-esque thriller "The River," hope is lost -- both shows join Ashley Judd's globe-trotting "Missing" (which was set up to be a one-season venture initially anyway) on the chopping block.
But ABC has saved a few fan-favorite shows: Shonda Rhimes' other ABC series "Private Practice" -- which moved from the post-"Grey's Anatomy" timeslot to Tuesdays when "Scandal" premiered -- will get a sixth season; Dana Delany's medical examiner drama "Body of Proof »

After starting with no-brainer renewals on Thursday night and making easy choices through Friday morning, ABC finally got to the tough calls on its bubble on Friday afternoon. On the negative side, ABC won't be renewing "The River," "Missing" or "Gcb" for second seasons. All three shows were major disappointments for ABC with the "Paranormal Activity" creator and Steven Spielberg behind "The River," Ashley Judd carrying "Missing" and "Gcb" seemingly positioned to take on the mantle of "Desperate Housewives." On the plus side, there were renewals galore for both comedies and dramas on the ABC bubble. Shonda Rhimes, »

Dozens of shows learned their fate this week so we’re going to run down the latest as they came in on Friday evening. The headline news included series such as Nikita, Happy Endings, Parks & Rec, Body of Proof, and yes, even Whitney being renewed while NBC’s Awake and Harry’s Law were not.
Make note of how many 13-episode seasons were ordered. The thinking may be that the networks are learning that the cable model does work better, because it 1) allows more shows to be added to the lineup and 2) keeps the interest going through the fall instead of trying to carry the momentum through the holiday breaks. That doesn’t give fans many episodes to be excited about, but in the case of Community, any word of renewal, regardless of number was good news.
Networks could also be thinking the strategy behind 13-episode seasons could be to »

With only two episodes left in its first season, ABC’s Missing will keep the twists coming. Last week, we found out Martin (Keith Carradine) is actually the elusive Suspect Zero, the leader of an international group of rogue former operatives (including one Sean Bean’s Paul was investigating before his faux death) and the man behind Michael’s kidnapping. “There will be more reveals, for sure,” Carradine says, assuring us Martin’s motives will begin to become clear in tonight’s episode. Is there any chance he’s not as bad as we think he is? “Well, no one’s all bad, »

Legendary actor Keith Carradine plays Martin Newman on ABC's "Missing." We now know that Martin is suspect zero and has been playing everyone for years. He has a hold of Michael (Nick Eversman) and no one knows what he'll do next. Zap2it spoke to Carradine about what's coming and how deep this goes.
"As things get revealed, I think the fascinating thing is that, now that we know that Martin is suspect zero, then we wonder how long this had been going on and what are the ramifications of this operation and how far-reaching is it and how did this go down," he says. "This guy was a major player in the company. I think that's going to be fascinating for the audience to discover."
We asked him what's coming up in the next episode. "You're going to learn more about Violet (Laura Donnelly) for sure. Becca (Ashley Judd »

Check out the third poster for Killer Joe, starring Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon and Thomas Haden Church. Playwright Tracy Letts writes the adaptation of his play which tells of a detective who doublas as a hired killer. The film reteams The Exorcist helmer William Friedkin with Letts after the eerie Bug thriller starring Ashley Judd. Pic is produced by Nicholas Chartier and Scott Einbinder and is definitely not for everyone with an Nc-17 rating for graphic aberrant content involving violence and sexuality, and a scene of brutality. That makes me want to see this even more...sick. »

“The real question is, who’s going to play Marilyn?” With that episode-ending question from chorus boy Bobby, Smash took us right back to the dilemma that’s been on everyone’s minds since the pilot.
I wouldn’t put my money on movie star Rebecca Duvall, who wound up in the hospital after ingesting a smoothie that was laced with peanuts, then revealed to Karen she wasn’t coming back to the show because of her brewing insecurities. When I sat down to watch television recently, I was surprised and slightly confused... Was it fall again? Has anyone else noticed the number of new television shows premiering regularly these days? It used to be that we spent September through May/June watching our favorite shows, and then bid television farewell for a few months of reruns and non-essential entertainment.
The TV gods have shined upon addicts like me and given us another reason to love that moving picture box. It's simple: Give us more great television! That is exactly what has happened, and I'm loving the short seasons of these new shows, like Gcb, Missing, and NYC22. Adopting the cable format could be exactly what they need to make hits.
As far as hits go, Gcb has been a great addition to the schedule. There's nothing better than watching the drama unfold as these Texan women deal with love, »
