Have you seen the stars of the new trashy TV show The Royals? We don’t mean the druggy, slaggy princess who looks like Kate, nor her brother the crowd-surfing prince, brilliant though they both are. Nor Liz Hurley as the Queen, nor Joan Collins as Queen Mum. No, we mean the two red-headed sisters who are definitely not, in any way, modelled on real-life princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Ratings: E!’s ‘Royals’ Off to Ok Start Behind ‘Kardashians'; ‘Dead’ and ‘Saul’ Lift AMC

20 March 2015 2:43 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Boosted by a strong lead-in courtesy of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” E!’s first original scripted series “The Royals” opened to solid-enough numbers last Sunday.

In Nielsen’s Live+3 estimates, which include three days of time-shifted viewing, Sunday’s 10 p.m. premiere of “The Royals” averaged 2.19 million viewers, including 1.04 million adults 18-49 (0.82 rating). In both categories, it stood as the week’s No. 15 original scripted cable telecast.

“Royals” ranks as the calendar year’s No. 2-rated series premiere in key women demos, behind only AMC’s “Better Call Saul.”

E! has aired some acquired scripted programming over the years, including repeats of “Sex and the City” and “Absolutely Fabulous,” but “The Royals” represents its first original scripted program. Created by Mark Schwahn, the hourlong drama centered on a fictional modern-day royal family features a cast that includes Elizabeth Hurley and Vincent Regan as Queen Helena and King Simon.
