Sacha Baron Cohen takes on a new target.
Sacha Baron Cohen in "Brüno"
"Brüno" is both a confirmation of Sacha Baron Cohen's startling comic brilliance and a proof of its limitations within his current format. The movie is less irritating than "Borat," his last exercise in guerrilla humiliation: Here, instead of simply ridiculing blameless Romanian peasants and unsuspecting everyday Americans, Cohen adds a new target — the great puffed-up world of celebrity and its glittery, often clueless inhabitants. Early on, we see the star at a Milan runway show, interviewing a model about her job. "It's really hard, isn't it?" he asks, deviously sympathetic. When she responds with "It's very hard," you wish the whole movie had focused on the international fabulatti.
But then we'd be deprived of Cohen's spectacular, mega-tasteless physical comedy. His character this time out, as even blameless Romanian peasants must know by now (to their relief), is Brüno,

Moviemaker Robert Rodriguez had to shoot a short film with Salma Hayek before he could convince studio bosses to hire the Mexican actress for Desperado - because they weren't sure her English was good enough for Hollywood.
The film gave the sexy star her big break and became her first English-language movie - and she had Rodriguez to thank for going out of his way to land her the part as Antonio Banderas' sidekick.
The director tells Latina magazine, "I was a big fan from the beginning. I gave her her first English major film role in Desperado. But before I could, I had to shoot a cable movie with her, called Roadracers, so I could show the studios that she could act in English and be great.
"I had to stick to my guns by saying, 'We have to hire a Latino, not just put brown face on someone.'"

Poseidon star Josh Lucas is convinced his latest movie experience has made him the perfect partner because, after playing a creepy, violent con man, he now wants to be settled and stable.
In Death In Love, the actor portrays a sick misogynist who treats women terribly, but he insists the dark role gave him fresh perspective when it comes to his romance with actress Rachel McAdams.
He tells WENN, "It made me want a different kind of love in my life, that's for sure. It made me absolutely not want to ever feel this level of pain that I was willing to do to myself and other people for the character. It made me want to stay away from the kind of relationship where you're in a cycle of destruction with each other.
"After this film I really hungered to find a much lighter tone in my love life. I was very proud that I went there for the film but I didn't feel for one second the desire to live that in real life. Now I completely want something that is saner and stabler and solid and loving.
"I think, before, I probably had that bad boy, dangerous thing, wanting that bad girl. I really have shifted away from that, particularly when, in my experience, you've done that for years and years. You end up angry and miserable and heartbroken afterwards.
"Looking back, I think, 'How did I spend seven years doing that?' and I'm sure the woman I was with is saying the exact same thing."
Lucas, whose exes include actresses Salma Hayek and Alexa Davalos, knows The Notebook star McAdams is the girl for him - because he shares so many passions with her: "Rachel is actually probably one of the most truly committed environmental people I've ever come in contact with in my life. She lives it. We have that immediately in common."

Alexis Bledel, who played blue-eyed prostitute Becky in Sin City, says the next film will be a prequel.
The first film, in 2005, was an amalgam of three stories in Frank Miller's neo-noir graphic novel series and was a critical and commercial success.
Bledel, 27, told MTV: "Someone told us yesterday that there's a script. Apparently, [I'm] back because it's a prequel. [I'm] supposed to die in the first one. But you don't see it, so maybe she doesn't."
Director Robert Rodriguez has said the next film would combine the Sin City comic book tale A Dame To Kill For with brand-new storylines by Miller.
A Dame To Kill For is set before and during the events in the first movie, which ties in with Bledel saying the next film is a prequel.
The lead character in A Dame to Kill For is the femme fatale Ava Lord, with Angelina Jolie, Rose McGowan

Columbia has moved Michel Gondry’s upcoming adaptation of TV’s The Green Hornet back two weeks to accommodate Denni Dugan’s comedy, Grown Ups. Green Hornet will be moving from June 25, 2010 to July 9, 2010 while Grown Ups moves from March 12th to a spiffy new June 15th date.
Columbia is hoping to rake in some cash before the third entry in the tween vampire series, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, drops in to swoon suburban goth girls.
The Green Hornet stars Seth Rogen as newspaper publisher Britt Reid. When not working to save his daily from the evil of the economy, he puts on a green mask and saves damsels.
Fuzzy face.
According to an interview by Rogen while promoting Monsters vs. Aliens in Australia earlier this year, the co-scribe and star, stated that the film will be an “origin story,” but not in the traditional sense. “…it’ll be unlike

Columbia Pictures is doing a little release date shifting this week. According to ercBoxOffice, the studio has moved Michel Gondry's action comedy The Green Hornet, which will star Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow, from June 25, 2010 to a July 9, 2010 release. The move makes room for the all-star cast comedy Grown Ups -- which will star the likes of Kevin James, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek and Maya Rudolph -- which has been moved from March 12 to June 25, 2010. This move wedges Green Hornet between Toy Story 3, which drops a week before, and Twilight: New Moon, which hits theaters the following week. And if you ask me, that's not a bad move, just not a great one. As we've seen this summer, getting caught in the clutter is possible -- just ask some of those May releases. Even though The Green Hornet doesn't share the same target demos as Toy Story 3 and

Salma Hayek has fired back at reports she once romanced Barbra Streisand's alleged ex Jon Peters, releasing a statement to deny all links to the producer.
Peters has reportedly listed the lovely Latina among his conquests in a racy new autobiography he's shopping around Hollywood, but she wants no part of his lothario legacy.
In a statement, the Frida star says, "I have never dated nor had a romantic relationship with Mr. Peters. My name has been continually linked to his romantic liaisons, and I want to put a stop to this lie."
The producer also reportedly dated Kim Basinger, Pamela Anderson, Sharon Stone and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and has promised to reveal all about his romances in the book.
Peters had pulled plans to release the explosive tome after he was threatened with legal action. He handed back his $700,000 (£466,600) deal with publishing giant Harper-Collins to write his memoirs, Studio Head, after the original transcript was leaked and certain stars featured in the book threatened to sue if it ever hit shelves.
The book included tell-all extracts about Streisand, who Peters allegedly had a string of torrid affairs with, as well as co-stars Robert Redford, Ryan O'Neal, and Kris Kristofferson.
Peters pulled the tome last month, saying, "I have been besieged by lawsuits and threatened litigation by some of the most important figures in showbusiness."

Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane, wants Leonardo DiCaprio to chase Spawn in his relaunch of the big-screen Spawn brand.
McFarlane, who is one of the most popular comic artists in the history of the medium, spoke to MTV about the possibility of having the Academy Award-nominated actor in his film. “The main character isn’t Spawn, per se, it’s the guy chasing Spawn,” McFarlane said. “And I’ve always had [Leonardo] DiCaprio in the back of my mind.”
I have Salma Hayek in the back of my mind.
Needs more cowbell. Less cape.
“It’s a big wish, but his dad was a big fan of underground comic books and [Leo] came from that. It’s not a big special-effects movie, it’s a character movie, so I could shoot it in 40-50 days and you don’t have to budget that much time.”

After actor Antonio Banderas revealed that "Puss in Boots" would indeed be an origin story for the character first introduced through "Shrek 2", screenwriter David H. Steinberg confirmed that Puss will be the only original character kept for the spin-off. "No, all new characters - except Puss," the scribe told Moviehole, dishing out possibility of Shrek, Fiona or Donkey making an appearance.
As for the reason behind the elimination of those popular characters, Steinberg pointed out on the fact that he is in the blank on the "Shrek Forever After" and "Shrek 5" scripts. "It doesn't overlap with Shrek at all," he explained. "Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn't know what Shrek 4 (and now Shrek 5) were going to do with the characters and we couldn't write conflicting storylines."
Earlier, Puss' voice actor, Banderas, has opened up to Coming Soon on what

When DreamWorks Animation updated their 2009-2012 line-up a couple weeks back, it was revealed that the Puss in Boots spin-off movie would be an origin story. The official synopsis reads: "Swords will cross and hearts will be broken in this adventure starring one of the most beloved characters of the Shrek universe - Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas). It's a swashbuckling ride through Puss's early years as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty and the street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs." We didn't expect Shrek, Fiona or Donkey to appear (after all -- it's an origin story, before they met), but screenwriter David H Steinberg confirms to Moviehole that the film will not feature any returning characters from the previous Shrek films at all, with the exception of Puss, of course!
