Julian Roman's Top 10 Films of 2009

30 December 2009 10:51 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A new decade begins on a high note as we look back at an exceptional year in film. 3D and the IMAX format have finally taken hold. What was once gimmickry and the sole realm of documentaries are now exciting cinematic experiences for audiences of all ages. Leading the charge was James Cameron's visionary Avatar. The long awaited science fiction epic surpassed considerable expectations with its breathtaking special effects and scope. But while the colossus reins supreme, smaller films like Lee Daniels Precious and Jason Reitman's Up in the Air resonated with their captivating performances. I am optimistic for 2010, but wonder where the hell are the flying cars and hover boards?Top Ten Films of 2009#1 Avatar There are not enough superlatives to describe this film. Writer/Director James Cameron has once again taken us to a new frontier. Jake Sully's (Sam Worthington) odyssey on Pandora is akin to Dances with Wolves in space. »

2009: A Look Back

30 December 2009 6:16 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

2009 was another big year for movies thanks to, in varying degrees, the recession, 3D ticket prices and Taylor Lautner’s abs. For funsies we have compiled a fairly trivial movie calendar for the year that was. Here you will find all the big events that, for whatever reason, may not have gotten a lot of media coverage.  Hit the jump to begin reminiscing about the past 12 months:

January

9- David S. Goyer does his best to stop Odette Yustman from ever getting another leading role in a film. (The Unborn)

16- Mall cops lose what little public respect they had. (Paul Blart:  Mall Cop)

23- Brendan Fraser ruins an otherwise perfectly good British film. (Inkheart)

30- Liam Neeson gains 20,000 cool points. (Taken)

-

February

6- Steve Martin makes a big mistake. (The Pink Panther 2)

13- The rules of scary movies are upheld. (Friday the 13th)

20- Madea goes to jail. »

The people had spoken and they picked "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" as both the Best Action Movie of 2009 and the Worst Movie of the Year!

The nominees will only be announced on 2 February and the awards given out on 7 March, but the likely contenders can already be divined

As the end of 2009 approaches we're in the thick of the Us awards season and pretty much everyone from the critics groups and some of the guilds to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa), the American Film Institute and the local barman have publicised their nominees and winners. Top 10 lists for 2009 have been drawn up, the year's most admired actors and actresses have been proposed and anointed, and the merits of the best work in directing, screenwriting, editing and all the crafts have been debated. The only body that has yet to weigh in on the virtues of Gabourey Sidibe or George Clooney or Invictus is the guardian of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

[TV] Ice Road Truckers: Season 3

28 December 2009 5:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Let me say this right now: I grew up in New Jersey. This said, you should be aware that schools are closed for even a few inches of snow. People from New Jersey simply can’t drive in the snow. I don’t know if it’s just a mentality, or the fact that you are probably supposed to go below the speed limit or what, but we can’t do it, at least, not well. So I have a lot of respect for people who can, especially if they are driving on the most dangerous road in the United States.

The cast of Ice Road Truckers: Season Three are doing just that as they travel the Dalton Highway in Alaska for Carlile Transportation. Show veterans Hugh “The Polar Bear” Rowland and Alex Debogorski are joined by several newcomers, including the show’s first female driver, resident hottie and tomboy Lisa Kelly. »

What Did You See Over Christmas?

28 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Spent the weekend with food, friends and a stack of DVDs. At the movie theater I tried to see Avatar a second time but failed (I'm holding out for the IMAX experience but it's eternally sold out... at least for people like me who don't plan things weeks in advance). We went to Sherlock Holmes since you have to see a movie with friends and family on Christmas day. It's tradition. And judging on the box office results (biggest Christmas weekend ever) I assume that's tradition for just about everyone.

Avatar $75 (for a $212 total)

It's already earned over $600 million worldwide so it looks like they won't lose their shirts, even with that unthinkably monstrous budget. The world's most important question [cough] right now is this: Will James Cameron make us wait 12 more years for his 9th film? And will it be a sequel to this one? He does like the number 2s. »

Record Breaking Holiday Box Office Led By ‘Avatar’

28 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Seems that film studios received plenty of holiday cheer this past holiday weekend. Audiences flocked to a myriad of movies, which resulted in the highest grossing domestic box office on record. When the dust had cleared, a massive $278 Million had been earned at the box office, which bested the previous record ($260.8 Million) set by The Dark Knight opening weekend in July 2008. The top three films alone grossed over $190 Million, an astonishing number.

Avatar has many prognosticators eating crow, as it dropped only a few percentage points from its opening total and made about $75 Million, earning a solid first place finish. Its 10 day total now stands at $212 Million, and worldwide, the film has made over $617 Million! At this point, there is little question it will earn its purported $300-$500 Million budget back.  After months of speculation, Fox studio heads can finally exhale a sigh of relief.

Karl Urban Joins Red, McMahon is VP

Mania reports that the busy Karl Urban (currently trying to take a bite out of Paul Bettany as the heavy in another comic book adaptation, “Priest”) has just added to his schedule by joining the cast of Bruce Willis’ comic book movie “Red”. Urban will play a character name Cooper. Meanwhile, Mania confirms that Julian McMahon will indeed be playing the Vice President of the United States. Likely, McMahon’s character is the weasel that begins the cycle of violence when he orders the hit on Bruce Willis’ character, Paul Moses, a former CIA black ops killer who has since retired. Robert Schwentke is directing the film, based on the comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. The cast is quite formidable, including Willis, Urban, McMahon, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, John C. Reilly, Brian Cox, Ernest Borgnine and Richard Dreyfuss. Invictus Review

23 December 2009 9:15 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short Version: Invictus is a drama of hope that tugs on some cliched emotional strings.

Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw reviews Invictus

Invictus is Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial offering, adapted from the book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation, by John Carlin. The screenplay was written by Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) and the film stars Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar (the real-life captain of the South African Rugby team during the mid-90s), and Morgan Freeman in a gripping performance as Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black President of the post-apartheid era.

The film tells the true story of Mandela’s early days in office, as he fights to bridge the gap of hate and mistrust that has existed for so long between South Africa’s white and black citizens. While Mandela is waging that uphill battle on every front of state and government, »
