Segregated Proms Are Getting More Play with Jennifer Aniston

21 July 2009 7:03 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

It looks like there's a push to reveal the lingering strings of segregation in Mississippi. From HotDocs, I shared word of Prom Night in Mississippi, a great documentary covering Morgan Freeman's attempt to stop the segregated proms in his hometown. Now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Screen Gems is getting ready for a similar account called Holler, which was written by Dana Adam Shapiro, and will be produced by Jennifer Aniston's Echo Films.

Said to be based on true events, the film will follow a bi-racial student who heads back to his Mississippi hometown with his mother. He falls for a white girl, and is shocked when he learns that she can't be his prom date due to lingering segregation. "He soon finds himself the catalyst for change for not only the prom but for the school and entire town." I wonder if he calls up Freeman for help?

Morgan Freeman Goes Top Secret For 'Red'

21 July 2009 1:40 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

You know, I think Morgan Freeman likes playing in the comic book world. After turns in Wanted, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight, Freeman is currently in talks to join another DC production. According to Variety, he's in talks to costar with Bruce Willis in Red, an adaptation of Warren Ellis' 3-book series.

Ellis' series centers on a former black-ops CIA agent named Moses. He's retired and enjoying the quiet life, and the CIA is happy to let him do so, until a new director is hired, and decides to pull up his file. When the director finds out what Moses actually did, he decides that he's a liability, and sends a high tech assassin to kill him. When the book was optioned last year, it was reported they'd added a love interest, and that Moses would be getting the old team back together. There would also be a

Morgan Freeman to join Bruce Willis in espionage thriller Red

21 July 2009 8:41 AM, PDT | From The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news

Morgan Freeman is in talks to star alongside Bruce Willis in a film adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC Comics miniseries Red, according to Variety.

Brothers Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber are penning the script for Summit Entertainment, which acquired the rights last year.

It's the first time a DC Comics title is being taken to a studio outside Warner Bros.

The three-book series, created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Hamner, was published in 2003 and 2004.

It tells the story of former black-ops CIA agent Paul Moses who is living a quiet life in retirement until a hi-tech assassin is sent to kill him because he knows too much.

Bruce Willis is set to play Moses, while Freeman's role is unspecified at this point but is speculated to be the other key character: new CIA director Michael Beesley.

Summit president of production Eric Feig told Newsarama that Red is "raw and has a great,

Writer Mark Millar reveals director for his epic Superman vision

21 July 2009 3:57 AM, PDT | From The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news

A Year ago, Scottish writer Mark Millar revealed he was working with an unnamed director on a new series of Superman films.

He was proposing a trilogy in the style of the Lord of the Rings films and later explained the details of his eight-hour saga. Millar pitched the idea to Warner Bros, saying he hoped to know by Christmas if it had been accepted. But nothing more was heard about the project.

Millar - whose comic book Wanted was adapted last year into a film starring Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy - had a previous connection to Superman through his acclaimed graphic novel Red Son in which the man of steel grows up in the Soviet Union instead of the USA.

He's now disclosed which director had been part of his creative team on the Superman film proposal.

Millar revealed to The Times that the director was Matthew Vaughn,

Morgan Freeman Joins Bruce Willis in ‘Red’

20 July 2009 9:21 PM, PDT | From newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news

Morgan Freeman is in discussions to star alongside Bruce Willis in Red, an espionage thriller at Summit Entertainment.

“Red” is a three-issue comic book miniseries centered on a former black ops CIA agent living a quiet life of seclusion.  His only contact with the outside world is with his former government handler and letters to his niece.  When a newly appointed Director of the CIA learns of his existence, he orders an assassination on the retired agent.  He calls the Agency and informs them his status has gone from green to red before going on the hunt.

The Variety story does not include Freeman’s role, but all signs point to Michael Beesley, the CIA Director who orders the hit.  The news comes on the same day the trade paper ran a story about DC Comics stepping up their efforts to bring more of their properties to the big screen.

More DC Comics-Based Movies on the Way

20 July 2009 8:43 PM, PDT | From CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news

Slowly but surely, Warner Brothers and DC Comics have put together a slate of productions that rivals Marvel, which has Iron Man 2 and several Avengers-related films coming out.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the relationship between the comics publisher and Warner Brothers has been reorganized, with DC now having greater input on the creative side.

In the past, Warners paid DC to license particular characters, which were spread out over a number of producers. Under the new strategy, there could be more unity of vision in future product.

Further cementing the partnership, Warners hired three of DC’s best-known writers this past fall. Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman will to act as consultants and writers for the studio's superhero line of movies.

In the case of someone like Johns, who had a popular run on "The Flash" comic and once served as an assistant to Superman director Richard Donner,

'Thirteen Assassins' Firms Up And Morgan Freeman Reading 'Red' Comics In Today's Dailies -- 7/20/09

20 July 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

So I am off to see "The Ugly Truth" this evening. Rom-coms aren't my usual bag, but I've decided to break character and play against type for once. I don't know why I'm confessing this to you readers, other than to have something interesting to say at the top of today's Dailies. Now that that's out of the way, on to the news!!

-- "Discipline," a sci-fi novel by Paco Ahlgren, is getting an adaptation from David Permut and Steve Lee. The story follows some dude locked in a conflict with an unseen enemy. The outcome of their battle will "determine the past, present and future of human existence." Sweet. (Variety)

-- The gore-loving lunatic director Takashi Miike has added a new (and surely soon to be disfigured) face to the cast of his "Thirteen Assassins": Koji Yakusho ("Memoirs of a Geisha"). "Assassins" is a remake of the 1963 samurai

Morgan Freeman To Join Bruce Willis In 'Red' Adaptation?

20 July 2009 2:42 PM, PDT | From MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news

Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's WildStorm series "Red" stirred up speculation several months ago when Bruce Willis entered headlines as a candidate to star. This weekend, Morgan Freeman joined the "Die Hard" actor as a possible cast member as well.

"It does indeed look real promising, and I'm very hopeful," Hamner wrote on his blog in response to the Variety story. "But I have to point out that, to my knowledge, neither actor is a done deal, and even if I'm wrong and they are, it doesn't mean the movie will even get made."

DC exec Gregory Noveck will be overseeing "Red" as exec producer, according to the story, with "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian also on board, with sibling team Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber are writing the script.

Morgan Freeman Sees 'Red' with Bruce Willis

20 July 2009 1:35 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

DC is stepping up its efforts in the movie game, sparked no doubt by The Dark Knight and the success of films by the company's rival, Marvel Comics. So we're getting The Green Lantern, which is great, Flash, which could blow out loud, and there are also plans for Aquaman, which...well, if they pull it off, then kudos. Seems almost impossible to me.

But DC is also developing some lesser known titles from its other sources, like the espionage caper, Red, a Wildstorm comic written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner. The raised eyebrow comes from the studio behind this adaptation. Rather than dealing with Warner Bros., which is a relative of DC under the Time-Warner banner, Summit Entertainment (Twilight) picked up the rights to Red last year.

DC Gearing Up For Battle

20 July 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | From FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news

Marvel Studios (in one incarnation or other) have had free reign of the comic book movie genre for quite some time now - so it seems only natural that their heavyweight competitor DC Comics picked Comic Con week for some major updates on their film slate!

Trade magazine THR have managed to get their hands on the details of the DC/Warner Bros master plan to take back some of the Comic Book film market, and it makes for interesting reading.

According them, DC have a slew of properties either in production or nearing pre-production, the list in it’s entirety reads like a who’s who of Hollywood:

“The Losers,” an action-adventure drama starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans, begins principal photography this week in Puerto Rico. “Jonah Hex,” a supernatural Western starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich, recently wrapped production in Louisiana. “The Green Lantern,

Morgan Freeman is starting to see Red

20 July 2009 10:10 AM, PDT | From Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news

Development continues on the movie adaptation of Red, based on the WildStorm/DC Comics title of the same name. With Bruce Willis already a sure thing to star in the action-thriller, negotiations have begun with Morgan Freeman about becoming the second cast member in the flick.

Created by writer Warren Ellis (Planetary) and illustrated by Cully Hamner, Red was first published in 2003 as a three-issue mini-series. After many years doing their dirty work Paul Moses (Willis' character) has retired from the CIA and is living a quiet life -- until a new director is appointed to the agency and decides that Moses knows too much and is a loose thread from the past that needs to be cut.

The script is still being finished by writers Erich and Jon Hoeber (Whiteout). The pic is set up at Summit Entertainment and should be rolling in front of cameras come the fall.

HuffPost Review: Prom Night in Mississippi

20 July 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | From Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news

In 1954, Charleston High School was ordered, like every other school in the country, to desegregate. Integration was instantaneous at some schools, happened a year or two later at others, and then, of course, there were determined stragglers; schools that used the Supreme Court's 1955 declaration of desegregation at "all deliberate speed" to delay and sometimes avoid integration altogether. Sixteen years after it was supposed to happen, Charleston High School in Mississippi, finally allowed black students inside its walls. Of course, Charleston's dwindling white population, who had fought so hard to stave off integration, managed to hold onto one small piece of Jim Crow: At this southern high school, white students attend one prom; black students attend another. Lucky for Charleston, superstar Morgan Freeman calls the town of 2,100 home. And this segregated prom thing -- it really didn't sit...
