Douglas Avoids Serious Accident in Bermuda

30 November 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Michael Douglas narrowly avoided a frightening fall while attempting to christen a new art museum in Bermuda. The Wonder Boys star briefly lost his footing while standing in a cherry-picker basket 25 feet in the air during a traditional "roof-wetting" ceremony on Monday. Douglas, a benefactor of the Masterworks Museum Of Bermuda Art, was pouring rum on the roof during a traditional christening ceremony. The 62-year-old star managed to steady himself after losing his balance and downplayed the incident to The Royal Gazette newspaper saying, "I had a good laugh and stumbled. I had a little moment." The $9 million museum is scheduled to open next year and will house works depicting the island by Winslow Homer and Georgia O'Keeffe. Douglas, who owns a home in the British Atlantic territory with his actress wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, adds, "It will be a wonderful asset for the island." »

The pair had planned to add to their brood, Dylan, six and Carys three - plus Cameron, Douglas' 27-year-old son with ex-wife Diandra Luker - but have decided to settle on two. Douglas says, "I think Catherine's resigned to the fact. She's gone back and forth on the subject, but when she gets back into work, I think she realizes that two's enough and I say to her, 'Just think of your stepson as your third child.'" The couple have only appeared in one movie together, Traffic, though they never shared any scenes together in the Oscar-winning film. »

Douglas Turned To Father After 'Wonder Boys' Disappointment

15 August 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar-winner Michael Douglas turned to his father Kirk Douglas for support when his 2000 movie Wonder Boys failed to garner the critical acclaimed he felt sure it deserved. The Wall Street star is still convinced it's a "f**king disgrace" the film, which also featured Tobey Maguire and Katie Holmes, was ignored by awards ceremonies and audiences alike. But he took comfort in his screen icon father, who suffered a similar disappointment when his favorite performance - in the 1962 movie Lonely Are The Brave - went largely unnoticed. Douglas says, "Wonder Boys was a huge disappointment personally. I loved the movie and we didn't even get critically acknowledged as far as awards go. I thought it was a f**king disgrace. I'll be honest - it really hurt my confidence. It was a punch in the gut. In fact it was my father who helped me through it. His favorite movie is Lonely Are The Brave. Nobody saw that when it came out, nobody's seen it since. My father's disappointment in that movie helped me get over mine." »

Douglas Jokes About Jellyfish Attack

17 July 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Michael Douglas has quipped about his holiday jellyfish attack in Majorca, Spain, insisting his son may need therapy after urinating on his back. The actor was vacationing with his family at their summer home when he suffered a nasty sting and pleaded with five-year-old son Dylan to alleviate the pain. The Wall Street star explains, "I took my kids down to the ocean the other day and we had a little problem - we have jellyfish. I got stung actually pretty bad, across my back just last week. There's sort of a remedy that we've all heard...urine. It's the remedy if you have a bad sting. So I asked my five-year-old son if he would pee-pee on my back. He looked at me like he'd gone to heaven. He was like 'This is what I call a good summer holiday! Pee-pee on daddy's back!' I don't know if it helped at all, but my son was happy. We'll work it out in 20 years (when he's in therapy)!" »

Douglas "Apologizes" for Unfortunate Misquote

11 April 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Michael Douglas has gone public to defend himself against comments he was credited as making about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's romance in a recent magazine article. The movie star reportedly poured scorn on the couple's relationship in style magazine GQ, posing the question, "I mean how long is that going to last?" Douglas now insists he was misquoted, and sat down with US news show Extra! to clear up the "unfortunate" matter. The Basic Instinct star says, "It was a lengthy article. (It) must have been 20 hours of tape recording, so I asked to hear the tape recording and the reporter said, Well, I turned the tape recorder off.' I said, 'Well you had it on for the whole time, so I didn't say it.'" Douglas admits that even though the quotes weren't his, he still wrote an apology to Brad and Angelina. He adds, "I consider him a good friend and she does wonderful work for the United Nations, which is what I'm also involved in. There's just a lot of pressure on the print media and they get to kind of exploitative quotes to try to attract people for their circulation, so it was unfortunate." »
