Jon Butterworth: Pool and particle physics in Pennsylvania, and a live blog of an Lhc night shift by Mark Tibbetts
I heard a man from the tax office on the radio yesterday, apologising to people who are having trouble getting through on the phone. It was Moneybox, which comes on while I am making lunch and waiting for the News Quiz, and is more fun and interesting than the Archers anyway.
It was a typical tale of frustration. Phone charges and fines mounting up, impossible to speak to anyone on the other end. It would be even more annoying if you were calling on the Vodafone network, I suppose. I began to feel a bit sorry for Hmrc man. My sympathy grew when the interviewer asked him something like:
"Aren't the problems because budget cuts meant you had to fire lots of staff?"
I could visualise the rictus grin, as »

Kellan Lutz (photo), best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies, and Resident Evil actress Spencer Locke, will star in the performance-capture 3D movie Tarzan, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale, and to be directed by Animals United’s producers / directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe. Needless to say, Lutz will bring Tarzan back to life, while Locke will play Jane. The screenplay was written by Klooss, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs‘ Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo, whose sole listed credit on the IMDb is Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments, currently in pre-production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it updates Burroughs’ story by having Tarzan’s parents killed in a plane crash, the CEO of Greystoke Energies as the film’s chief villain, and Jane as an environmentally conscious heroine. Come to think of it, the first "update" isn’t something really new: Boy’s »

Sure, the Hollywood set has its fair share of famous-faced doppelgangers, but "The Help" actress Octavia Spencer wants you to know that she is not Sherri Shepherd. The Oscar winner took to Twitter Thursday night to share with her followers a message to "Dear Hollywood."
"Dear Hollywood: Sherri Shepherd And Octavia Spencer Are Not The Same Person but we are dear friends, Lol," Spencer tweeted.
What incident sparked Spencer's need to clear up the case of her mistaken identity?
Shepherd told "The View" audiences that while covering the Academy Awards red carpet, several celebrities approached the "30 Rock" actress with congratulations for her "The Help" Best Supporting Actress nomination -- accolades that were clearly meant for Spencer.
"So many people would say to me on the red carpet, 'do you think you're gonna win tonight?' They thought I was Octavia Spencer," Shepherd explained on Thursday's show.

The Oscars is probably my favorite award show that takes place next door to a Claire's. I'm serious. Have you been to the Kodak Theatre? It's basically a big recess in a Hollywood Boulevard mall, one with a Claire's and a Guess and an Express for Men. I remember watching Kate Winslet pick up her Oscar in 2009, the year I moved to L.A., and saying aloud, "So she basically walked past a Claire's to win that." It's tragic and telling. And kind of appropriate, because the Oscars -- much as I literally can't stop thinking about them -- are a mall-brand affair. The nominees are palatable, the format is bland, and the whole ceremony is devoted to mainstream flattery and appeal. But here's the other thing: I shop at the mall. It's at least clean.
And thankfully, »

Last Friday’s Chuck was full of flashbacks, shootouts, and a surprising decision by Sarah Walker.
Now Dan Forcella Eric Hochberger, and Kris Hekmi are back to talk about what happened to Sarah, whether Jeffster will ever perform again, and more in the latest installment of the Chuck Round Table.
Weigh in with you own answers below!

What was the funniest moment in "Chuck vs. Bo?"
Kris: I totally lost it when Jeff and Lester woke up in the desert for the second time and repeated the same lines, especially the gefilte curry.
Eric: Casey hating Twitter. 'Cause man, check out Adam Baldwin's Twitter some time. But yes, Jeffster's Memento moments was a close second.
Dan: I have to go with the flashback to Morgan's time in Vail, and him immediately screaming "Who wants to party with the freakin' intersect?!?!"

Most people believe that Hollywood sex symbol Bo Derek belongs to the Republican Party. It’s not hard to believe, since she campaigned for both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. In “Chuck vs. Bo,” Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) wasted no time in coming straight out about her thoughts of quitting the spy game to Chuck (Zachary Levi) and shift Carmichael Industries to an office job rather than a field job. But before this transition began, the team took some of their spy gear to Colorado for one last mission where Morgan (Joshua Gomez) was reunited with Bo Derek….his past “lover!” The first thing that surely came to everyone’s mind was, when did that happen? The next thought… what is Bo up to now in the world of Chuck? The title of the episode clearly details Bo as the bad guy. So it came as no surprise that Bo was involved with the case of the intersect. Is it safe to say she is our final female villain? Either way, it all made for one of the most entertaining episodes this season. »

Chuck Review, Season 5, Episode 10, “Chuck Versus Bo”
Written by Kristin Newman
Directed by Jeremiah Chechik
Airs Fridays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
Throughout the tumultuous history of TV and movies, there has been one constant rule. Characters should never talk about taking “one last mission.” Variations on this law include one last score, one last job, or even one last night out with the guys. It’s all bad news. This makes Chuck and Sarah’s decision to take one last spy mission a thorny proposition. They recognize the dire ramifications of this move, but there’s no choice. They must take the chance and go against the conventional wisdom. This pop-culture precedent bodes poorly for their trip to Vail, even if the stakes are worth the risk. The location of a pair of Intersect sunglasses (another one?) is the invaluable prize, and they’re not the only people looking for it. »

There was nothing spooky about this Friday the 13th episode of Chuck. There was, however, a lot to enjoy in "Chuck Versus Bo," including my favorite song of all time, the return of the frosted tips and the appearance of apparent actress turned super spy Bo Derek.
Most importantly, though, it ended with yet another character inheriting the intersect. In my interview with her on Tuesday, Yvonne Strahovski teased that there would be conflict between Sarah and Chuck before the end. I guess this event is what will lead to said conflict.
Could anyone in their right mind blame Sarah for the decision she made? It was either download the intersect, or allow herself and Casey to die by the guns of yet another uber-villain out to get the intersect himself. She had to do it. Her already super spy skills combined with the intersect kung fu made it a »

Chuck 5.10 "Chuck Vs. Bo" Review
Chuck season 5 emerges with its tightly-coiled tenth entry in this week’s "Chuck Vs. Bo" Morgan's past with the Intersect drags Chuck and Team Bartowski on one last mission in Vail to meet with superstar Bo Derek as herself, and uncover a new villain. Things are really starting to move along in Chuck's final episodes, and thankfully "Bo" manages to keep a good balance of its many plot lines toward one of the more fun episodes of the season.
Well, there’s three episodes left. That should be enough time to give Casey the Intersect too, right? Maybe Big Mike, or one of the Buy More extras?
All kidding aside, “Chuck Vs. Bo” left us with a lot to digest, particularly in those last few minutes as Casey and Sarah seemed pinned down by a barrage of gunfire, their only hope for Sarah to »

"Chuck" on Friday (Jan. 13) was cruising along through a very amusing episode, with funny stuff from Morgan's lost Intersect weekend, Jeff and Lester's continually thwarted investigation and Bo Derek(!).
And then Chuck had to go and say "one last mission," which turned a mostly breezy (if thematically on-point) episode into something much darker. The last few minutes were among the tensest the show has ever done, and tone shift was a little jarring.
And also, awesome. Those final scenes in "Chuck vs. Bo" pretty definitively set up the endgame for the series, connected dots going back to the beginning of the show and introduced a formidable final bad guy in Angus Macfadyen's Nicholas Quinn. I was frankly a little worried, after the happy-ending feeling of "Chuck vs. the Baby" and the mostly stand-alone "Chuck vs. the Kept Man," about whether the show was dallying a little too much before bringing us to the finale. »
