Johnny Depp named our “Hollywood Male Movie Star of the Year”

31 December 2010 8:27 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Earlier this week, we reported that Johnny Depp was named the top Money-Making celebrity of 2010.

Get ready to add another “trophy” to your Hollywood mantelpiece, Mr. Depp.

This has been a banner year for an actor who has had several noteworthy frames. Depp launched 2010 by starring as The Mad Hatter in “Alice in Wonderland,” his seventh collaboration with director Tim Burton. The film was a massive hit, becoming the highest-grossing film in Burton’s oeuvre and second only to “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” for Depp.

Depp also romped around Italy as Angelina Jolie’s cohort in “The Tourist,” and like Ms. Jolie, collected a Golden Globe nomination for his work.

But Depp made headlines away from the big screen, which is part of the reason we celebrate his greatness. Take this story – one of our favorites from 2010 – which found Depp »

Angelina Jolie named our “Hollywood Female Movie Star of the Year”

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: As 2010 draws to a close, we here at HollywoodNews.com want to recognize the enormous talents who entertained the masses by going above and beyond in the fields of film, television and the arts. It was a banner year for multiple artists, but these people stood out to us for assorted reasons.

Angelina Jolie, for instance, showed tremendous range on screen. She returned to her action roots for the summer thriller “Salt.” She then stepped into the glamorous “Movie Star” mold to act alongside Johnny Depp in December’s “The Tourist” – a move that earned the actress her sixth Golden Globe nomination.

But it’s Jolie’s work behind the camera that has us looking forward to 2011, when we’ll get our first look at the A-lister’s feature-film directorial debut. A love story set in war-torn Serbia, Jolie’s film faced resistance on personal and political levels, »

Samuel L. Jackson to play killer in Meeting Evil

31 December 2010 7:06 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Oops! I think I just gave away a spoiler, but Samuel L. Jackson and Luke Wilson will team up in the suspense thriller Meeting Evil based on the 1992 novel by Thomas Berger. The film to be directed by Chris Fisher in Louisiana deals with a recently laid off Realtor who suffering from depression after losing his job. Taking a cross-country joy ride to cure his blues he meets up with stranger, played by Jackson, who turns out to be not exactly what he seems to be.

Actually this sounds rather lame if you ask me. I say so because I have producer friend of mine who years ago tired to get this same project off the ground with Johnny Depp in the Wilson role and from what he told me the book really deals with a very lonely nerdy guy who finally makes a real friend for the first time »

During a recent interview with Paul Reubens, he was asked if he would like to re-team with director Tim Burton after working together on "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure." The original 1993 film grossed only $50 million in theaters, but has been getting a 3D re-release every year since 2006, earning another $25 million. Tim Burton Developing The Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel? [Updated]

30 December 2010 1:45 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

File this one in the rumor pile for now, but Tim Burton might be developing a sequel to his 1993 classic The Nightmare Before Christmas.  In a recent interview [via Dread Central], Paul "Pee-wee Herman" Reubens said he would like to reteam with Burton in the future (the two teamed up for Pee-Wee's Big Adventure), but that the director has a slew of potential projects already lined up.  Reubens then proceeded to rattle off a list of various films Burton was developing and one of them was reportedly a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas. Burton's garnered a lot of clout ever since Alice in Wonderland broke a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.  However, his next project is an adaptation of the 1960s gothic soap opera series Dark Shadows starring (who else) Johnny Depp.  Filming on Dark Shadows is set to begin in April.  It's possible that Burton could still be developing »

Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie top 2010's money-making movie stars

30 December 2010 10:43 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Despite critical panning, "The Tourist" not only snagged Golden Globe nominations, but it helped make Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie the biggest movie stars of the year.

According to Quigley Publishing Company's 79th Annual Poll of Motion Picture Exhibitors, the co-stars take the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The poll asks movie exhibitors which stars they think generated the most box office moolah for the year. This is a pretty good indicator of a star's real box-office draw. (See the top earners for 2010)

Depp is on top yet again, having finished first in 2007 and 2006 also. This year his resume boasts "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Tourist." With the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" due out in 2011, he's likely to appear on the Top 10 again next year.

Jolie's claim to box office fame this year is owed to her super-spy turn in "Salt" and setting Depp up in "The Tourist."

10 Best Movie Quotes Of 2010

30 December 2010 8:13 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The most memorable movie lines require three things: They must sound like something a real person (or at least the character uttering them) would, you know, actually say; they must be smarter, funnier and snappier than what a real person would actually say (this sounds like it would contradict the first point, but it doesn't); and they must have a great actor to give them a great delivery. It's a delicate balance, and one that takes both skill -- and a tiny bit of luck -- to achieve.

This year was packed with plenty of ear-pleasing, intensely quotable movie quotes, ranging from the highbrow ("The Social Network" and "True Grit") to the not-so-highbrow ("The Other Guys" and "Machete"). Some movies -- here's looking at you, "Social Network" -- were so full of amazing one-liners and witty exchanges that I could have made a top 10 list just drawing from them. But in the interest of fairness, »

Johnny Depp Beats Out 'Twilight' Stars To Top IMDb's List Of Most Searched Celebs Of 2010

30 December 2010 7:41 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Internet Movie Database has compiled its list of the top 25 (and top 100) most searched stars in 2010, and if there's anything that it shows it's that the "Twilight Saga" stars might actually be going out of style. While Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson still sit happily at the #2 and #3 spots (respectively), Taylor Lautner tumbled from the #5 spot in 2009 down to the #14 spot this year, Dakota Fanning went from #8 to #18, and Ashley Greene and Nikki Reed fell off the list entirely. (Greene dropped to #52 in the top 100 while Reed joined co-stars Kellan Lutz and Peter Facinelli somewhere outside the top hundy.)

But does that really mean anything for the series? Probably not, considering Daniel Radcliffe is nowhere to be see on the list, Emma Watson dropped from #53 to #64, and Rupert Grint was never on it at all, yet "Harry Potter" continues to dominate in the box office. Maybe the reason why »
