Me And Orson Welles with Richard Linklater in person: Coming Monday to South Lamar!

18 December 2009 4:14 PM, PST | OriginalAlamo.com | See recent AlamoDrafthouseCinema news »

We’re honored to welcome the man most responsible for putting Austin on the global film map, Richard Linklater, to present his latest movie Me And Orson Welles on Monday night December 21 at the Alamo South Lamar. There are only a few more days left to see a movie that will certainly be discussed at awards time.

Mick Lasalle of the San Francisco Chronicle said of Christian McKay’s performance of Orson Welles, “He gives what I believe is the most exact and uncanny screen portrayal of an historical figure, ever.”

Roger Ebert says. “The impersonation of Welles by Christian McKay in Me And Orson Welles is the centerpiece of the film, and from it, all else flows. We can almost accept that this is the Great Man.”

And the great director behind this portrayal of the great director will be with us to take us through the process of …

'Hangover 2' Heading to Thailand?

18 December 2009 10:57 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The sequel to The Hangover - available now on DVD and Blu-ray, incidentally - will be in theaters on Memorial Day weekend, 2011. That's a slight shift by Warner Bros. from this summer's early June release, one that really helped the film gain traction in summer's less active second month. I'm certain the massive success of the first film makes Warners think it can play anywhere, and they're probably right. Why that never applies to Harry Potter or Christopher Nolan, I have no idea.

So we have a release date and we know the cast and writer-director Todd Phillips will return but we don't have a story. That's Ok, right? I mean, the first one didn't really have much of one, either. Actually, The Hangover has a pretty involved story, loaded with tons of comedic call-backs. That it appears so simple is one of its strengths.

Chud says part two may …

Review: Me And Orson Welles

18 December 2009 1:35 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Orson Welles will probably forever be considered one, if not the best directors to ever live. His Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons are considered to be two of the greatest films ever made. Not only was he an amazing director, but also an accomplished actor and in theater, film and radio. Me And Orson Welles picks him up as he forms the Mercury theater and the longest running Broadway version of Caesar.

I was initially turned off by this film simply because it starred Zac Efron and an unknown Christian McKay who is portraying Welles. After watching the trailer I figured I would set aside all of my negativity towards Mr High School Musical and go in with an open mind… not to mention I used to have a mad crush on Claire Danes. I came out with a huge smile on my face and a feeling of disappointment …

Movie Review - 'Me and Orson Welles'

17 December 2009 11:03 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Me and Orson Welles

Starring Zac Efron, Christian McKay, and Claire Danes

Directed by Richard Linklater

Rated PG-13

Orson Welles was 25 when he directed Citizen Kane. It’s hard to fathom how anyone could make a film with such bravura at 25, to say nothing of doing it the first time he walked behind a camera or without acknowledging that this little feat - creating a cinema landmark still cited by many as the best film ever - was undertaken in 1941.

Prior to Kane, Welles worked in radio and theater, shocking the country with War of the Worlds while only 23, and staging legendary adaptations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Julius Caesar when he was even younger.

Me and Orson Welles presents The Man Who Would Be Kane during rehearsals for his Mercury Theatre’s Caesar, which he updated as an allegory for Mussolini’s Italy. By this time (1937), Welles was already a well-paid radio personality, …

That role belongs to little-known Christian McKay, who …

Danes: 'College Made Me A Better Person'

14 December 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Claire Danes has no regrets about risking her movie career by quitting Hollywood to go to college, insisting she needed the experience to "balance" her life out.

Danes shot to fame at 15 as the star of teen show My So Called Life.

After making the successful transition from small to big screen, with roles in Little Women, U Turn and Romeo and Juliet, the actress walked away from acting in 1998 to enrol at the prestigious Yale University.

Danes made a successful return to acting after graduating, but she insists swapping Hollywood for college was worth the risk, even if the move had backfired.

She tells Moviehole.net, "I stopped acting for three years, and I went to college, which was the right thing for me to do. I think I probably did sacrifice a lot by working so young, but I made up for it later.

"There were parts of me that were really overdeveloped, and other parts that were kind of underdeveloped and I did balance out during that time at school."

And she feels much better equipped to handle Hollywood with a degree under her belt: "I kind of just hung out, and learned how to socialise, made friends outside of the industry, and I kind of defined myself as a person, in a safe place, so I feel quite fortified now." …

Me and Orson Welles

12 December 2009 5:00 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Me and Orson Welles

Directed by: Richard Linklater

Cast: Zac Efron, Christian McKay, Claire Danes

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: December 11, 2009 (limited)

Plot: A young wannabe actor (Efron) is taken under the wing of directing genius Orson Welles (McKay) as he works with his Mercury Players theatre company to revolutionize Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” in 1937.

Who’S It For? Fans of Welles will likely cherish this wonderful impersonation even more so than
squads of slightly grown up Efron fans who experiment with the High School Musical actor’s attempt at something a bit different. The film isn’t exclusive to either of these groups, as its comedy reaches past those who are aware of Welles’ quirks or Efron’s looks.

Expectations: How would the expected drama with Efron balance with the true story of Welles’ magnificence? Would the legend’s impersonator, McKay, be able to effectively duplicate …

Interview: Zac Efron, Richard Linklater, Christian McKay, 'Me and Orson Welles'

10 December 2009 4:35 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Interviewing one actor or filmmaker can have its challenges, even though the interview is enjoyable. Interviewing three people at once ... there's definitely a juggling aspect involved, especially if they've been working together, doing a lot of interviews together, and aren't afraid to step on one another's answers. I wish I'd brought a video camera to record my time with Me and Orson Welles director Richard Linklater and co-stars Zac Efron and Christian McKay, because they were such an entertaining trio. (They're not bad looking, either.) McKay stars in his film debut as Welles, whom he has also portrayed on stage, and Efron plays a teenager who finds himself on the fringes of the Mercury Players as they stage Julius Caesar in 1937 New York.

Cinematical was able to grab only five minutes or so with the three gentlemen from Me and Orson Welles during a recent press day in Austin -- …

The Alamo Guide

for December 10th, 2009 If you’re at the S. Lamar theater this weekend, and you see a bunch of groggy ass, smelly, crazy-looking people wandering out of the theater around noon on Sunday, don’t worry. They won’t hurt you, they will have just sat through a full 24 hours plus of movies and they’ll be in desperate need of sleep. I’ll be one of them. It’ll be awesomely exhausting! Aside from that, if you got tickets already (if not, toooo bad), you can see the folks from Broken Lizard with their newest film The Slammin’ Salmon, but the most important thing that you should do is Go See Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans!!! Yes, the name is long, and the trailer makes it look kind of silly, but the hype over at Alamo Headquarters is ridiculous and the few people in …

Hundreds of Screens: Me and Orson Welles

9 December 2009 8:03 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Though I am loathe to spend a big paragraph merely explaining what I'm about to write about -- that's so Blogging with Training Wheels -- I make an exception.

I never have any time to write anymore which saddens me. I'm behind on reviews, interviews, articles, podcasts (very soon!): Part of this is my fault (procrastination, writer's block, fatigue), part of this is Hollywood's fault (They've never heard of the Gregorian calendar I don't think). Over at Nick's Flick Picks, my dear friend has been sharing his filmgoing diaries from the past decade and though nothing I type here will be its equal, my cameos in those memoirs convinced me that merely narrating my moviegoing adventures without editing might actually be the only way I'll be able to trick myself into confronting a collossal task: Getting through the Christmas glut and living to write about it.

I've been spending my time shuffling between shopping, …

A Paranormal number of flops

8 December 2009 9:02 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

New releases Me and Orson Welles, The Descent: Part 2 and The Box fail to offer much opposition as Paranormal Activity leapfrogs into top spot in its second week

For distributors with a new release this weekend, the only solace to be grasped at was that their movie hadn't done as badly as someone else's. As executives gathered at the annual British independent film awards in London on Sunday night, the talk was of how all the new films targeting adult audiences had flopped – the only differences were the degrees of failure.

Flop #1

Bottom of the pile of wide releases was Me and Orson Welles, which failed to crack a £1,000 screen average on 187 prints. Comparisons with Zac Efron's recent hits 17 Again (£2.56m debut) and High School Musical 3 (£8.41m including previews) are hardly fair, but his latest film's £166,000 opening confirms widely held suspicions that his many young fans wouldn't show …

A schoolboy stumbles upon a major role in Welles's production of Julius Caesar in this sublime adaptation of Robert Kaplow's book

It is difficult to recapture the excitement Orson Welles generated 50 years ago among cinephiles and serious theatregoers. When George Coulouris joined the Bristol Old Vic Company in 1950 after a lengthy sojourn in the States my fellow sixth-formers and I were thrilled beyond measure to have in our city an actor who'd played Mark Antony opposite Welles in the Mercury company's fabled 1937 modern dress production of Julius Caesar and had a leading role in Citizen Kane. Yet none of us had seen Citizen Kane which had been out of distribution since shortly after its opening in 1941. We only knew of him through a few film appearances, most notably The Third Man, and his reputation for brilliance, wit and innovation, and what a few years later we'd learn to call charisma. …

The jury's out

Trash had the pleasure of being on the Bafta jury to decide this year's Orange Rising Star Award nominees. It was an impressively intense process, whittling down 117 candidates until 18 remained. These were then vigorously debated: is being in Twilight a good or bad thing? Do we count debuts or only those with growing bodies of work? Will the voting public recognise a foreign actor if we put one forward? Anyway, our votes are now in for the final five nominees who'll be announced on 12 January, sparking a public vote via www.orange.co.uk/bafta. Current holder Noel Clarke is on the jury this year and is in no doubt how much of a boost the Orsa gave him last year. "In terms of recognition and respect within the industry, it's amazing how much it does for you," he told me. "A whole new public saw me winning, …
