Special Screening Alert: You Need to See 'There's Nothing Out There'

24 May 2012 12:45 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

If you live in Los Angeles and haven't made weekend plans yet, we just got word of a cool upcoming event you should absolutely check out.

On Saturday, May 26, director Rolfe Kanefsky's first flick, There's Nothing Out There, is being screened at the New Beverly Cinema. I know what you're thinking: "What's so special about a screening in L.A.? " But, trust me, this is a pretty big deal.

Kanefsky is a journeyman filmmaker perhaps best known for 2004's The Hazing, a nifty Halloween haunted house flick starring Tiffany Shepis and Brad Dourif. While that is a great movie, Kanefsky's debut is actually something of a groundbreaker.

Filmed in 1989 by a 20-year-old Kanefsky, There's Nothing Out There served as his calling card to the film industry. As a long-time fan of scary movies, Kanefsky concocted a standard horror film — he put a bunch of teenagers alone in a secluded »

From the Press Release

Cult Movies to Watch: When a Stranger Calls

21 May 2012 6:09 AM, PDT | Movie Cultists | See recent Movie Cultists news »

When a Stranger Calls isn’t quite as stupid as Sleepaway Camp but it comes pretty close. The budget is low, the acting is somewhat ropey, and the dialogue drips with cheese. However, while you’re chortling at the stilted delivery and incongruous sound effects, you may find  that the atmosphere slowly creeps up on you until you are forced to check under the bed for bogeymen. For all its faults, it has been highly influential – Wes Craven effectively pinched the whole concept for the iconic Drew Barrymore scene in Scream.

Based on an urban legend from the days when they were known as “folk tales,” the story begins with teenage babysitter Jill (Carol Kane) receiving a series of phone calls during the course of her evening’s duties. The anonymous stranger asks  ”Have you checked the children?” and it seems that he is watching her every move. Police initially »

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to John Carpenter

17 May 2012 11:16 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

"I met him…15 years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face and, the blackest eyes...the devil's eyes."

"I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply ... evil." –Dr. Sam Loomis (Halloween, written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill)

There is an upper echelon of horror directors that fans of the genre hold in a sacred reverence. Rightfully at the top of the list are the filmmakers who created the most iconic and memorable of our favorite films. One could argue that just the fact that John Carpenter created Halloween would put him into »

Horror Needs More Rape/Revenge Flicks

17 May 2012 7:48 PM, PDT | Horrorbid | See recent Horrorbid news »

As much as I love slasher films and torture porn I believe that the horror industry really needs more rape revenge horror films. The 1972 version of The Last House on the Left from Wes Craven is one of the greatest horror films ever made and it depicted some of the most graphic, hard core acts of realistic violence against women that the horror genre has ever seen. I particularly like the ending when the parents take their revenge on the misfits… »

Trailer for Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D is just hilariously awful

15 May 2012 8:54 AM, PDT | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Much like John Carpenter and Wes Craven, two horror directors whose earlier works are celebrated by all, Dario Argento has made what we can safely call "crap" over the past decade or so. Not content with being associated with the giallo-style of thrillers, Argento is trying his hand at the Dracula mythos in 3D.

The John Bensalhia Column: Scream of the crop

14 May 2012 1:07 PM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

So here is a slight change of pace – I'll be branching out into other areas apart from Doctor Who, including film franchises, TV shows and comedies. How's about kicking off with a scary movie series then? Newbies be warned – there are so many spoilers in this article, that Doctor Who's River Song would explode with smug rage.

By the middle of the 1990s, the horror film had seemingly died for good. Just like Dracula slowly rotting away to a skeleton, the horror genre had slowly ebbed away for the past decade or so. Hammer Horror classics from the 1960s and 1970s had given way to popular horror franchises in the 1980s such as Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street, but even by the mid-1990s, these had seemingly vanished into the ether. However, acclaimed director Wes Craven along with Kevin Williamson were to breathe new life into the rotting genre. »

Retro Active: Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

11 May 2012 6:11 PM, PDT | GreenCine Daily | See recent GreenCine Daily news »

by Nick Schager

[This week's "Retro Active" pick is inspired by Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's fish-out-of-water vampire comedy Dark Shadows.]

Pair a flagging comedian with a floundering horror director and what you get is Vampire in Brooklyn, a marriage made in horror-comedy hell courtesy of Eddie Murphy and Wes Craven. The mid-90s-isms of this wretched collaboration are plentiful—cue Salt-n-Pepa's "Whatta Man" to underline Murphy's alpha-male sexiness?— and yet they're the least of this film's problems, so misbegotten and poorly executed is its every element. Working from a story co-conceived by Murphy and a script co-written by Murphy's yet-to-be-Chappelle's-Show-famous brother Charlie, Craven's pre-Scream debacle gets clunky wit' it from the get-go. Before we've even seen him, Maximillian (Murphy) narrates the set-up: with all his brethren dead, Max has left his Bermuda Triangle island home to find and marry the last of his line, who happens to be living (unaware of her vampiric nature) in Brooklyn. Given Craven's Haiti voodoo-themed The Serpent and the Rainbow, »

Piranha 3Dd Review

Director: John Gulager

Starring: Danielle Panabaker, David Koechner, Katrina Bowden, David Hasselhoff, Gary Busey, Ving Rhames

Certificate: 18

Running Time: 83 Minutes

Synopsis: After the horrific events of spring break at Lake Victoria, the blood-thirsty school of prehistoric piranha set their sights upstream, on the newly-opened ‘Big Wet Water-park’. The owners, patrons and a celebrity lifeguard get more than they bargained for as the flesh-eating fish, come in search for another feeding frenzy…

When director Alexandre Aja was announced as director for the remake of Joe Dante’s exploitation horror (and let’s be honest, a Jaws rip-off), my immediate thoughts were ‘this is gonna be ferocious!’ Aja had previously caught Hollywood’s attention with his intense horror Switchblade Romance (aka Haute Tension). The buzz surrounding that particular shocker led to a remake of Wes Craven’s 1977 survival-horror The Hills Have Eyes. Never have I seen a more ferocious and unforgiving filmmaker »

The Starving Games to Spoof The Hunger Games

This one had it coming. The Hunger Games is getting the spoof treatment, courtesy of Jason Friedburg and Aaron Seltzer, calling it The Starving Games, reports Variety. K5 selling its international rights at Cannes to the film which is being produced by Safran Company's Peter Safran. Friedberg and Seltzer have spoofed plenty since they embarked on Scary Movie, a spoof of course of Wes Craven's Scream thriller. Since then, they've gone on to make over $350 million worldwide by teasing various franchises with films including Vampires Suck, Meet the Spartans, Date Movie and Disaster Movie, all of which were low-budget eyesores for the most part. Okay, so 300 spoof Meet the Spartans did have a few laughs, but most of the spoofs ended up grotesque. This will be same »

If you’re going to Kapow Comic Con then keep your eye out for independent creator, publisher and overall sicko, Adam Cheal. He’ll be showing off his controversial series, Zyklon B, which bursts into life with issue #1 later this month.

Here’s a sneak preview of Zyklon B, and a taste of what to expect from both the comic and its creator.

Simon Fisher is wrongly executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin. Using the power of the occult he is ‘saved’ when his physical form is mutated into the gas that takes his life – Hydrogen Cyanide – better known as Zyklon B. Simon, now living devoid of form and substance, is out for revenge on those who framed him…

Wes Craven's Producer Partner Targeted By Hacker

6 May 2012 4:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Director Wes Craven's film partner Marianna Maddalena has been granted a restraining order against a former contractor accused of harassing the Scream producer.

Derrick Toole was hired by Maddalena to work on her Los Angeles home in 2010, but he allegedly violated her privacy by hacking into her computer and placing a tracking device on her car to monitor her every move.

Police discovered the top horror movie producer wasn't the only person reportedly targeted by Toole and he was charged with felony counts of wiretapping, computer access and fraud.

A judge has now ordered Toole to keep his distance from his alleged victims, according to TMZ.com. »

2012: The Best Movies of April

1 May 2012 10:48 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

2012 promises to be a fantastic year in cinema. Not too long ago, we posted a list of thirty of our most anticipated films of 2012, and so I decided I would keep track of my favourite films released each month. Here are my three favorite films released in April.

1- Cabin In The Woods

Directed by Drew Goddard

Screenplay by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard

The clever high-concept Cabin In The Woods is without a doubt the best and most inventive cabin-in-the-woods picture since Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2. It is also the most clever genre deconstruction since Wes Craven’s Scream. Screenwriters Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon tease us with a simple set-up, only to turn the joke upside down and on its head. Crammed with small unanticipated and unexpected incidents and comical twists, director Drew Goddard defies conventions while demonstrating a strong understanding of modern horror. This over the »

Exclusive: Producers of Award-Winning Elm Street Documentary Announce Definitive New Friday the 13th Retrospective

27 April 2012 10:29 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We've just gotten word that the documentary Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of ‘Friday the 13th’ began filming on April 24th in Los Angeles, New York, Connecticut and Vancouver.

Inspired by author Peter M. Bracke’s bestselling book, this comprehensive retrospective from Panic Productions and Hutson Ranch Media promises to be the definitive look at the making of the iconic horror franchise.

From its inception in 1980, the Friday the 13th film series has proven to be as unstoppable at the box office as its hockey-masked, machete-wielding villain Jason Voorhees, who has terrorized the fictional town of Crystal Lake for more than 30 years. Since then, Friday the 13th has become a true multimedia juggernaut, having spawned twelve feature films, a syndicated television drama, and an extensive line of merchandise and collectibles. What’s more, revenue figures are as staggering as they are relentless: over 95 million tickets sold and nearly $600 million »

Retro Shock Theater: Two Evil Eyes

26 April 2012 7:23 AM, PDT | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

On paper, it looked like a dream project – horror masters Dario Argento and George Romero re-teaming for the first time since Argento served as producer on Romero’s seminal splatter masterpiece Dawn of the Dead (1978) but this time each gentleman would be directing one half of an Edgar Allan Poe anthology.

Originally, Argento had planned the film to involve two other directors as well (reportedly John Carpenter and Wes Craven), but scheduling conflicts and other concerns caused Argento to pare it down to the more manageable duo of just he and Romero.

Even today, when expectations for their newer work has diminished some, I believe it’d still cause plenty of fan excitement for Argento and Romero to be collaborating on a project like this but back then, Two Evil Eyes held the promise of being a true event. In addition, FX maestro Tom Savini was on board to supply »

'Scary Movie 5' Gets a Director, Starts Casting; Robert Rodriguez Readies to Direct 'Fire and Ice' Remake

25 April 2012 11:55 AM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Undercover Brother director Malcolm Lee will be rebooting the Scary Movie franchise — a spoof of Wes Craven's self-aware horror opus series, Scream. Last year we saw Craven and writer Kevin Williamson return to their baby, along with the ensemble cast that many horror fans have grown up with (Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Neve Campbell, and friends), so it seems fitting that its parody partner would follow suit. Lee and company will be starting production on the new movie this summer, and casting is already underway according to Entertainment Weekly. Scary Movie 3 and 4 director/writer David Zucker will be co-writing/producing, bringing his lampooning expertise to the table. Is the Scary Movie reboot a way for the studio to market off of Joss Whedon's The Cabin in...

Robert Rodriguez Reminisces About His Early Film 'Roadracers'

24 April 2012 10:01 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Robert Rodriguez loves "Roadracers," a film he made on a sliver of a budget in between his indie hit "El Mariachi" and his breakout "Desperado."

He told me that much almost as soon as he got on the phone. "I love 'Roadracers,' " he said. "It is one of my favorite movies." You could hear the excitement in his voice.

And he has a reason to be excited. After years of attempting to get "Roadracers" out on DVD and then eventually Blu-ray, Rodriguez finally succeeded with the April 17 release in high definition. Part of the reason it had taken so long to hit video was because of the film's origins.

"It was a movie made for cable, so it never had any real presence. It was always 'We'll put it out when we put out "Sin City." ' Then that would come and go," Rodriguez said. "It was one »

The Intern's Lot: A Conversation in Film with Rob Thomas

I had the opportunity to join the Austin Film Festival at their sold-out event for "Conversations in Film with Rob Thomas" on Wednesday, April 18 at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. For those unfamiliar with Thomas, do not get him confused with the lead musician for the band Matchbox Twenty because this Rob Thomas writes screenplays. He's the creator of the critically acclaimed television show Veronica Mars, and on Wednesday, he spoke about creating a television series from inception to completion using his series Party Down as a case study.

I was the first person to show up to the event at 6:20 pm. The Aff staff was still prepping their setup, but once they were ready, I checked in and formed a line for the event. I met a wonderful couple from Arkansas named Raven and Nathan, and our conversations about Hitchcock, Wes Craven and »
