Venice Announces 2017 Lineup, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Suburbicon,’ ‘mother!,’ and Many More

18 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Will 2017 be the year that Venice gets its king-making mojo back? After a steady run of debuting recent best picture winners — from “Spotlight” to “Birdman” — the festival missed out on last year’s big winner, “Moonlight,” which bowed at Telluride. This year’s lineup is a promising one, and while it’s still very early in the process, it’s difficult not to pick through today’s announcement of the festival’s slate and not search for the big contenders.

As was previously announced, the festival will open with Alexander Payne’s social satire “Downsizing,” starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. The festival will also play home to the premiere of the Netflix original “Our Souls at Night,” as part of their planned tribute to stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Annette Bening will lead the competition jury, ending an 11-year succession of male jury chiefs.

Caponera wrote the latest episode, “Girls Are Funny, Too,” which focused on Cassie (Ari Graynor), as she tries to break new ground in an era where women in comedy had even more obstacles in a man’s show business world. The episode was loose, poignant and funny, and highlighted the excellent cast, which includes Oscar winner Melissa Leo as Goldie, the owner of the club that the stand up comics perform in. Despite the vacuum that Americans tend to live in, there is an entirely different world that exists outside the scope of our visible and physical realities. When you mention film and stage, Americans automatically assume Hollywood or Broadway are involved, but there are entertainment worlds that span the globe outside our sphere of indulgence. Even when it comes to comedy, we are captivated by Kevin Hart, Jim Carrey and the like; however, Europe has talent as well. One dynamic comedian that has major traction in the United Kingdom is Russell Howard. He is not only funny but he is immensely

Jim Carrey to Give Sworn Deposition in Wrongful Death Case Over Ex's Suicide

7 July 2017 1:55 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Jim Carrey will answer questions about his late girlfriend Cathriona White’s suicide in a sworn deposition next month.

The actor is being sued for wrongful death by White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton, and her mother, Brigid Sweetman. The two complaints were consolidated into a single case on Thursday, with both claiming that Carrey obtained the drugs that killed White under the false name “Arthur King” and provided them to her, despite knowing she was prone to depression and had previously attempted suicide. Furthermore, they allege that Carrey gave White “three STDs without warning her.”

While storytelling is something we value deeply in the shows we watch, we often look to the key actors of these narratives as one of their ultimate signs of success. Some of our favorite shows thus far this year have owed so much to some staggering acting work. With two inevitable exceptions, we limited this overview to one performance per show, one role per actor. But there was some incredible range to be found in that work, which makes us excited for what the rest of 2017 has in store.

National Bikini Day Salutes Hollywood, From Raquel Welch to Judi Dench

5 July 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s National Bikini Day on July 5, celebrating Louis Reard’s 1946 invention of the swimwear (of course it would be in France!). The swimsuit wasn’t an immediate hit, though, due to 1940s standards of modesty. But pop culture helped bring it to the masses, thanks to such early-1960s icons as Brigitte Bardot, Ursula Andress, and Raquel Welch.

In 1960, the novelty song “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini,” sung by Brian Hyland, became a No. 1 hit in the U.S. and the record company said bikini sales boomed as a result. And in 1962, Andress emerged from the water in the James Bond “Dr. No,” while Bardot appeared in “A Very Private Affair,” both in small white two-piece suits. And nothing was the same after that.

In 1964, American International Pictures released “Bikini Beach,” the third of its “Beach Party” movies starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. “Bikini Beach” featured surfers, bikers, »
