Kathy Griffin Beheads President Trump”. So shrieked the headline to a story posted on scurrilous gossip site TMZ on 30 May of this year. Griffin, best known for a standup act in which she acts as a showbusiness tattletale recounting mortifying run-ins with more famous celebrities backstage (her most famous targets include Cher, Josh Groban, Ryan Seacrest and Céline Dion), was pictured brandishing a blood-spattered Donald Trump mask looking like a recruiter for a Beverly Hills branch of Isis.

Brazil Choses ‘Bingo – The King of the Mornings’ as its Foreign-Language Academy Award Submission

19 September 2017 8:54 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Brazil has selected “Bingo – The King of the Mornings,” one of its most awaited debuts of 2017, as its entry for next year’s foreign-language Academy Award.

Produced by Brazilian production powerhouse Gullane, “Bingo – the King of the Mornings'” candidature also marks a victory for Warner Bros. whose Brazilian office co-produced the title, which will be distributed in Latin america by Warner Latin America.

The submission, voted on by a commission of over 200 film specialists, was announced by the Brazilian Film Academy. It appears to have avoided the polemics of last year’s choice when the publicly declared animosity of one member of the candidature jury towards Cannes competition title “Aquarius” caused three filmmakers to refuse to submit their film for consideration.

Long-anticipated, “Bingo – The King of the Mornings” was chosen from among 22 contenders. It marks the first feature as a director of Daniel Rezende, an award-winning editor on Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life,” José Padilha »

Culture Dump #9: Beyond the Great: Is Jim Carrey Kaufman-ing Us?

18 September 2017 8:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Andy did you hear about this one? The one where megastar comedian Jim Carrey appeared at New York Fashion Week and raised eyebrows during an out-there stint on the red carpet? No, it wasn’t due to his Grizzly Adams style beard (He ditched that a few weeks ago) and nope, he didn’t bend over and talk through his bum cheeks, Ace Ventura-style. Although, talking was to blame for all the news stories that popped up this week in the wake of his bizarre antics.

“There’s no meaning to any of this,” he tells E! News reporter Catt Sadler, once he’s stopped circling her. He glances distractedly into the distance, then continues, “I believe we are a field of energy dancing for itself. We don’t matter,” he says, “that’s the good news.” The whole interview was strange. Strange but not entirely unexpected. Especially if you »

Not long after Ray Donovan’s Paula Malcomson learned that her cancer-stricken alter ego, Abby, would not survive the series’ current fifth season, she had something of an epiphany. “I made a phone call to [showrunner] David Hollander and said, ‘I want her to lose all her dignity. I want her to lose her beauty. I need this to be bad; otherwise, I don’t know how [she would ever] leave her children,’” she recalls. “And he said, ‘Let me think about it.’ And he put the phone down and then called me back in 15 seconds and said, ‘Ok, let’s go. Toronto Docs Dig Deep Into Celebrity With New Insights

15 September 2017 2:06 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When it comes to documentaries, the idiom — “out with the old, in with the new” — doesn’t hold much weight.

Just ask the Tiff directors behind docs about Eric Clapton, Sammy Davis Jr., Grace Jones, Jim Carrey, Andy Kaufman, Jean-Michel Basquiat and André Leon Talley. Each boldface name has garnered so much media attention that audiences might think they already know everything there is to know about them.

But the filmmakers, including Sophie Fiennes (“Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami”), Sam Pollard (“Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me”) and Lili Fini Zanuck (“Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars”) managed to challenge the existing mythologies surrounding each individual and reveal new insights through new access to each artist’s lives and work. The result? A fresh, sometimes surprising perspective on people we thought we knew.

Fiennes has been making “Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami” for over a decade. She calls the film an experiential, present »

Jim Carrey Wants To Work With Marvel Studios

15 September 2017 11:13 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You might have heard of Jim Carrey’s recent peculiar public behavior, such as his trip to Fashion Week in New York at which he claimed the event was “the most meaningless thing that I could come to” and his frequent statements that “Jim Carrey doesn’t exist.” While it seems the actor is, let’s say, following his own path right now, it turns out he might be open to making another big budget blockbuster in the future.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the eccentric star while he was attending the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his new short, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – The Story of Jim Carrey & Andy Kaufman Featuring a Very Special Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton. The talk gravitated towards the issue of sequels and Carrey’s distaste for movies that primarily exist, as the actor puts it, “for the function of commerce. »

Homeland Adds Morgan Spector, Mackenzie Astin to Season 7 Cast

Homeland is restocking its ensemble before diving into another season of high-stakes spy games: The Emmy-winning thriller has added two actors to its Season 7 cast, TVLine has learned.

First up is Morgan Spector (Boardwalk Empire, Person of Interest), who will be a series regular in Season 7 as Dante Allen, an old friend of Carrie’s who is looking into the hundreds of people President Keane has detained following last season’s assassination attempt. (Season 6 ended with that assassination attempt, and an increasingly paranoid Keane shutting Carrie out of her inner circle.)
