‘On the Road’ Trailer & Clips: A Star-Studded Search for ‘It’

24 May 2012 3:46 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Despite boasting an all-star cast that includes Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, (Blonde) Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley (13), Kirsten Dunst, Alice Braga (Predators), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard and Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss, we actually haven’t covered much of Walter Salles’ (The Motorcycle Diaries) adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, which is being produced by Francis Ford Coppola.

Personally, I’ve been a longtime detractor of Kerouac’s seminal novel about the rise of the Beat Generation – I’m “Camp Thompson” (as in Hunter S.) when it comes to narcotics-fueled excursions that serve as ruminations on American life and society. Still, On the Road is a film worth noting as it has recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, so today we have the latest clips and a previously-released trailer for the film to share.

Garrett Hedlund/Kristen Stewart Praised, On The Road Mixed

23 May 2012 1:16 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

On the Road‘s English-language reviews have been mixed. (Please scroll down for snippets from a handful of Us/UK reviews.) Walter Salles directed the long-gestating movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s 1950s’ novel about his road trips in the post-World War II United States. The On the Road cast is headed by Tron: Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund, Control‘s Sam Riley, and Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart (photo), who landed the role after Salles saw her in Into the Wild. [See also On The Road Variety review.] Drew McWeeny at HitFix: "On the Road does not feel like a dry history lesson, nor is it overly reverent toward its subjects. Instead, Salles, working with screenwriter Jose Rivera, managed to make something that has a pulse of its own, and that’s due in no small part to the casting of Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley as Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise. They have a strong, easy chemistry »

On The Road Movie: Mixed Review/Variety

23 May 2012 1:12 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Cannes Film Festival movie review: In Variety, Justin Chang says the following about Walter SallesOn the Road, a film adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s 1957 novel starring Garrett Hedlund (Dean Moriarty / Neal Cassady), Sam Riley (Sal Paradise / Jack Kerouac’s alter ego), and Kristen Stewart (photo, as Marylou / LouAnne Henderson): "Evocatively lensed, skillfully made and duly attentive to the mercurial qualities of its daunting source material, Walter Salles’ picture pulses with youthful energy but feels overly calculated in its bid for spontaneity, attesting to the difficulty and perhaps futility of trying to reproduce Kerouac’s literary lightning onscreen. "… The blur of events and surface impressions onscreen … feels overlong at 139 minutes, yet nowhere near long enough, and even Riley’s appealing, bright-eyed turn can’t keep Sal from seeming a passive, psychologically weak protagonist. "The other actors hit their notes effectively, particularly [Viggo] Mortensen and [Tom] Sturridge as the respective alter egos »

Two Clips Featuring Kristen Stewart And Kirsten Dunst In On The Road

23 May 2012 10:36 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

As you might have heard, Kristen Stewart is out at Cannes right now, wowing critics and baring all as Marylou in On the Road, the Walter Salles-directed adaptation of Jack Kerouac's seminal novel. Word's already getting out about just how naked she gets-- and one stunning sounding sex scene featuring Steve Buscemi-- but we're going to have to wait until the movie comes out here in the United States to get a look at that. But, to tide us over in the meantime, distributor IFC has released two clips from On the Road, both featuring Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley as Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise, respectively. Kirsten Dunst shows up in the first one as Dean's estranged wife Camille, and then Stewart is at the center of the second one. Take a look below. $ »

Kristen Stewart's 'On The Road': Cannes Reviews Are In!

Critics agree the film doesn't capture the spirit of Jack Kerouac's Beat novel.

Kristen Stewart hit the 2012 Cannes Film Festival to debut her latest film, "On the Road." Adapted from Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation novel, the film centers on writers Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) as they journey across America with Dean's wife, Marylou (Stewart), living in a whirlwind of sex, drugs and writing.

Despite the American classic being considered unadaptable, director Walter Salles took on the ambitious project, much to the dismay of critics. While they say the movie remains faithful to the book, they feel the film version lacks the spark Kerouac carried throughout the novel.

'On the Road' Movie Review - 2012 Cannes Film Festival

23 May 2012 5:31 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Well made but otherwise empty, On the Road manages to capture late-'40s America in a feature centered on cross-country travel, smoking cigarettes, sex, drugs, drinking and stealing gas and food, but as a narrative it has little to nothing to say. The tedious result of this adaptation of Jack Kerouac's famed novel is, however, unfortunate considering Eric Gautier's rich, smoke-filled cinematography, Walter Salles's direction and stand-out performances from most of the cast. All that said, I was able to find my own interpretation of the material that managed to slightly elevate my overall opinion, but that's hardly a saving grace.

Beginning in 1947, we're introduced to Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a writer who can't find anything to say. The words won't come, but inspiration comes knocking as he and his writer friend Carlo Marx (Tom Sturridge) settle in for a night with Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and »

Cannes Minireview: On the Road

23 May 2012 2:50 AM, PDT | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Required reading for teenagers in America, Jack Kerouac's On the Road is now a big-screen film, and the finished product just debuted at Cannes. It's one of the most anticipated movies to be screened at the Grand Palais - read on to see what we thought. Who's behind it? Walter Salles, of The Motorcycle Diaries, was tasked with directing the picture, which was of course based on the Kerouac classic. Salles has a long list of stars - at one point, I wondered who isn't in this movie. Sam Riley, who had a star-making role in 2007's Control, plays the lead role of Sal Paradise, and Garrett Hedlund is his pal Dean Moriarty. Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst have smaller parts of Dean's love interests, and Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Tom Sturridge, Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss, and many more have other cameos. The production has been in the works for decades. »

Second Opinion - Rampart (2011)

22 May 2012 2:10 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Rampart, 2011.

Directed by Oren Moverman.

Starring Woody Harrelson, Ice Cube, Ned Beatty, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Brie Larson, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi and Sigourney Weaver.

Synopsis:

A crooked cop struggles for survival in 1990s Los Angeles.

Despite their job to try and protect us from crime and being hurt, there are a lot of dirty cops in this world. We've seen numerous movies and TV shows try to take on this subject. Sometimes it works (The Shield) and other times it doesn't (Street Kings). So the question is, where does Oren Moverman's Rampart fall on that spectrum?

Rampart is a character study set in 1999 Los Angeles that follows officer Dave Brown, played by Woody Harrelson. Brown has been a police officer for many years and has done his fair share of things that most would consider to be wrong for a cop to do. Most recently, he chased down »

Mike Ryan: 'SNL' Scorecard: Mick Jagger's Fine Farewell To Kristen Wiig

20 May 2012 8:34 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

There was no doubt about it: This was Kristen Wiig's night. Of the three cast members rumored to be leaving "Saturday Night Live," I think we can go ahead and remove the word "rumored" off of Wiig and Samberg, who said his goodbye with "Lazy Sunday 2." Jason Sudeikis, on the other hand ... well, he introduced the Foo Fighters? In other words: There were really no hints throughout a show that he had very little to do with concerning his future (unless you want to read into Jagger mentioning that "many of you are moving on" in the final sketch). So if it was his last show, that's a shame. On to what turned out to be a quite emotional final Scorecard of the season...

Sketch of the Night

"She's a Rainbow" (Mick Jagger, Kristen Wiig, Ensemble) A perfect ten. Honestly, that was the most touching, emotional sendoff that I've ever seen "SNL" pull off. »

Plenty Of New, Vibrant, Sun-Kissed Images From Walter Salles' 'On The Road'

It feels like we've been tracking Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's seminal Beat Generation work, "On The Road," for years now, but come this Wednesday we'll finally have word on how the Brazilian director has fared with the cult favorite. Everything we've seen so far has been highly promising, a notion personified by the young but talented cast led by the duo of Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund.

We now have a boatload of new, vibrant, sun-kissed images from the film, some of which highlight characters who have not been featured as prominently in the promotion so far, including Kirsten Dunst, Terrence Howard and Amy Adams, along with the usual suspects and Kristen Stewart. Let's not forget that Viggo Mortensen, Alice Braga, Elizabeth Moss, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan and Steve Buscemi are also a part of this thing, and that Salles is again collaborating with his 'Motorcycle »

Bafta TV special/Abi Morgan: A golden year for television

As the countdown to next week's British Academy Television Awards begins, Abi Morgan, screenwriter of The Hour, Shame and The Iron Lady, reveals why it's been a golden year for television

Mabel is unimpressed. "What are you doing?" "Writing a piece about television." "Hm." She considers me with the bored disdain that only an eight-year-old can deliver, when they're tired and hungry and just home from school. "Television. It rots the senses in the head. It kills imagination dead." I stare blankly, my fingers hovering over my laptop keys. "'Who told you that?" "Everyone knows that, Mum." She sighs, already halfway out of my office.

Roald Dahl's got a lot to answer for. It's not that I am advocating the ditching of the classics. I have oompa loompa-ed my kids with the best of them, sending my son Jesse off to school with his face orange and his hair green for National Book Day. »

Mike Ryan: 'SNL' Scorecard: Will Ferrell Is Not A Belieber

13 May 2012 8:47 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

The last time Will Ferrell hosted "Saturday Night Live," the show (and that season) ended with an epic sing-along of Bill Joel's "Goodnight Saigon." Last night's offering did not have that same monumental feel to it -- even though there were guest appearances by Will Forte, Ana Gasteyer, Liam Neeson, Justin Bieber, Michael Bolton, Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake. There were so many guest stars, it felt, at times, like the actual cast had been swept under the rug. Heck, at times, it felt like Ferrell himself was put on the back burner. Since I can't think of a third metaphor for "set aside," let's just move along to this season's penultimate Scorecard.

Sketch of the Night

"Digital Short: 100th Digital Short" (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Justin Beiber, Kene Thompson, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Portman, Michael Bolton, Usher, Jon Hamm, Will Ferrell) Poor Akiva Schaffer has been replaced by Justin Bieber. »
