Film Review: The Nice Guys

18 May 2016 11:25 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Stop me if you’ve seen this one: Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger walk onto the set of a period L.A. crime drama and, in between tangled plot twists and turns, a lot of people get shot until in the end the true bad guy is revealed.  No one could blame you for guessing L.A. Confidential, but the latest collaboration between the now-veteran actors is actually The Nice Guys, the latest film by the writer turned-director, Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

The similarities between Curtis Hanson’s 1997 neo-noir film and this physical, slapstick comedy do not end at its overlapping cast or city setting.  Twenty years have passed since Crowe and Basinger collaborated Hanson’s film, while this new collaboration is itself set twenty years later.  It’s now Los Angeles in the 1970s (though by the time screen title announces that the title »

Can Angry Birds Take Down Captain America at the Box Office?

17 May 2016 10:34 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Later this week, Marvel's massive Phase 3 blockbuster Captain America: Civil War will cross $300 million domestically while passing the $1 billion mark at the global box office, after two impressive weekends in release. But it's possible that it may fall out of the top spot this weekend. The superhero adventure faces its biggest threat to the crown thus far, going up against three highly-anticipated new releases, Sony's The Angry Birds Movie, Universal's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Warner Bros.' The Nice Guys. While it all depends on how much Marvel's Civil War drops in its third frame, we're predicting that The Angry Birds Movie will come out on top.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Angry Birds Movie will open in more than 3,700 theaters, which is still roughly 500 theaters fewer than Captain America's 4,226-theater rollout, but it's the biggest debut Cap and The Avengers have faced thus far. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising »

The Nice Guys Review: Shane Black Is Back and It Is Nice, Guys

17 May 2016 8:07 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The Nice Guys is primarily a comedy but a movie that certainly does not skimp on the action either and at the end of the day is a completely welcomed departure from all of the animated films, huge tent poles and superhero movies audiences are going to mostly be treated to over the coming months. Shane Black hasn't directed a lot of movies, but this film proves that his longtime experience in Hollywood has been put to good use now that he is finding himself in the director's chair more often. The Nice Guys most closely resembles his 2005 directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, also from Warner Bros., but as hard as it may be for fans of that film to believe, this is at the end of the day, probably Black's best film to date.

The film takes place in 1977 Los Angeles and is centered around a pair of private eyes, »

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are outstanding in Shane Black’s detective thriller, The Nice Guys. Here’s Ryan’s review...

Screenwriter-turned director Shane Black majors in creating likeable screw-ups. One of his earliest and most famous characters was Lethal Weapon’s Martin Riggs, a suicidal, alcoholic widower and renegade cop. But there was also Joe Hallenbeck, the booze-soaked Secret Service agent-turned private eye in The Last Boy Scout, and Harry Lockhart, the heavy-drinking thief and wannabe actor played by Robert Downey Jr in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

You can probably spot the pattern here. In The Nice Guys, we get two likeable screw-ups for the price of one: Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), a crumpled “enforcer” whose job basically involves frightening people and breaking their limbs for hard cash, and Holland Marsh (Ryan Gosling), a private investigator so catastrophically bad at his job that his own daughter, »

Inside Donald Trump's '91 Apology for Pretending to Be His Own Spokesman - How Marla Maples Shamed Him Into Fessing Up

15 May 2016 5:50 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump flatly denied Friday that he posed as his own spokesman during a June 26, 1991, phone call to then-people reporter Sue Carswell - a phone interview that Carswell taped at the time. When she played the recording for friends of Trump and his then-girlfriend, Marla Maples, they were unanimous: the voice was Trump's own, a ruse that Carswell noted in her story for the July 8, 1991, issue of People.By the time People was putting its July 22, 1991, issue together, Trump had called Carswell to confess that he was, in fact, the so-called John Miller who called a couple weeks earlier. »

Cannes 2016: The Nice Guys review

The Nice Guys review: Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling leave Cannes in stitches in this supern caper set in the seventies. Shane Black is most definitely back.

The Nice Guys review from the Cannes Film Festival, May 2016.

The Nice Guys review

Shane Black follows up his enormous success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man 3, with this hark back to his superb action/ comedy vehicles of old that started with Lethal Weapon in the eighties, and continued through to Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang with Robert Downey Jr. nearly two decades later.

The Black template features some of his; a buddy cop set-up, though this time our main protagonists are private detectives, non-stop comedy and balls to the wall action. The story revolves around Ryan Gosling‘s low-life, moral-free, whiskey swigging private detective Holland March, who is investigating the disappearance of a young woman in Los Angeles, 1977. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe embrace the '70s in new trailer for The Nice Guys

If you’re a fan of seventies tunes and Ryan Gosling, we’ve got the movie for you.

The Nice Guys released a final trailer today before the film hits theatres on May 20th, and it looks just as outrageous and hilarious as we would expect it to be. The film follows Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as private investigators in 1970s La who uncover a secret conspiracy while investigating a mysterious disappearance. With both characters being rather incapable of doing anything smoothly, hilarity naturally ensues.

Matt Bomer, Kim Basinger, and Margaret Qualley also star, and Hannibal Buress, Ty Simpkins, and Jack Kilmer also make appearances. The Nice Guys will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next week, and we’re confident it will impress.

Early Reactions For The Nice Guys Heap Praise On Shane Black’s Cool Thriller

5 May 2016 8:12 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Shane Black’s The Nice Guys has hit the ground running with a wave of positive reviews gushing over the director’s cool ’70s thriller.

It’s been an awful long time coming for Black, too, who first drafted the premise for his buddy cop comedy – something of a Black speciality over the years – all the way back in 2001. In those intervening years, the project flirted with both CBS and HBO, where Sean Penn would have headlined.

Alas, it wasn’t until Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe took point as The Nice Guys that Shane Black’s noir began to take shape. Now, it’s two weeks out from release, with Warner Bros. handling North America distribution to the director’s spiritual successor to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. And by all accounts, it’s been worth the wait.

There’s a chance The Nice Guys is the ultimate Shane Black film. »

Old-School Trailer For The Nice Guys Embraces ’70s Style In Wonderful Fashion

29 April 2016 7:11 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are off to the ’70s in the latest and wonderfully retro trailer for Shane Black’s crime noir, The Nice Guys.

Edited and scored to resemble the film’s period setting, today’s snippet is arguably the best yet, as Gosling and Crowe’s bumbling detectives look to solve a case on the neon-lit streets of ’70s Los Angeles. The former plays Holland March, a down-on-his-luck private eye that is struggling to make ends meet, let alone solve cases, but stumbles upon a shot at the big time upon meeting Jackson Healy, Crowe’s all brawn, no brains muscle-for-hire.

It’s a dynamic that allows for some truly entertaining exchanges between the film’s leading duo, and recent featurettes for The Nice Guys have highlighted that piping hot chemistry in brilliant fashion.

Just three weeks out from its release, Warner Bros. Pictures have posted a new and quite fitting trailer for Shane Black's dark noir comedy "The Nice Guys" starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

The film is set in 1970s Los Angeles, and so the new retro trailer has been treated, editing, voiced and given graphics that all give it the feel of a film trailer from that period - including an awesome "and introducing Kim Basinger".

In fact it overdoes it a big, the treatment it gets looks more like you're watching the trailer as if it were playing from a VHS tape. "The Nice Guys" opens May 20th.
