‘Boogie Nights’ Turns 20! Looking Back on Mark Wahlberg and the Ensemble Cast’s Breakthrough Performances

10 October 2017 7:53 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Dirk Diggler has great manners.

Every character in Boogie Nights has small details like this that encapsulate everything about them. Some of these qualities, such as Diggler's obsessive politeness whenever he's pulled away from a conversation, are written on the page. Others appear to be specific choices made by actors, like the way Philip Seymour Hoffman's Scotty J. nervously holds his arm during Jack and Dirk's confrontation.

As the film turns 20, Et is reexamining the breakthrough performances in Boogie Nights and Paul Thomas Anderson's showcase of incredible character actors.

Set in the late '70s, Boogie Nights chronicles 17-year-old busboy Eddie Adams’ (Mark Wahlberg) journey as he’s taken under the wing of pornography auteur Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) and into a world where he could finally become the bright shining star he always felt destined to be. Adams quickly transforms into the neon sign dynamite that is Dirk Diggler and takes the industry by storm »

Blu-ray Review – L.A. Confidential: 20th Anniversary Edition

8 October 2017 3:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

L.A. Confidential, 1997.

Directed by Curtis Hanson.

Starring Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, David Strathairn, Kim Basinger, and Danny DeVito.

Synopsis:

L.A. Confidential has been reissued on DVD and Blu-ray for its 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, nothing new was created for this release, so owners of the 2008 Blu-ray can skip this one, although those who have the earlier two-disc DVD Special Edition may want to upgrade to a high-def copy of the movie. A code for a digital copy is included too.

L.A. Confidential is one of those movies that bears repeat viewings. While its story of three La police officers gradually uncovering deep-rooted corruption may seem simple on its surface, the plot adds the complexities of Hollywood’s seedy underside to the proceedings. Set in any other city, it might be a more straightforward narrative, but La’s mystique gives the story another layer for viewers to navigate. »

Rip Hugh Hefner: 11 Hollywood Stars Who Stripped Down for Playboy (Photos)

27 September 2017 8:30 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Kim Basinger, Jenny McCarthy, Charlize Theron, Madonna, Lindsay Lohan and Sharon Stone are just a few of the actresses who posed for the men’s magazine Playboy before it abandoned full nudity — and then quickly brought it back. In fact, the magazine became famous in large part by featuring Marilyn Monroe when she was one of the most famous, glamorous and celebrated of Hollywood stars. It’s clear Hugh Hefner has always had a close relationship with Hollywood — inviting both luminaries (and not-so-luminary celebrities) to visit his mansion. He has sold it, but continues to live there. Also Read: Bill Cosby's. »

Hugh Hefner, Playboy Founder, Dies at 91

27 September 2017 8:30 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner died on Wednesday at the Playboy Mansion in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of West Los Angeles. He was 91.

The media mogul’s influence went far beyond publishing — he created the sexual revolution nearly single-handedly (with some help from the advent of the birth control pill and the rise of feminism).

After starting the status quo-shattering Playboy magazine in 1953, Hefner went on to launch TV and film companies, finance documentaries, and preside over the Hollywood social scene from his bubbling Jacuzzi at the mansion, a frequent location for industry events. The mansion, which had became somewhat run-down, was sold in 2016, but the terms of the sale specified that he was allowed to live there until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Crystal, and four grown children: Christie, who served as CEO of Playboy Enterprise for more than 20 years, David, Marston, and Cooper, who currently serves as Chief Creative Officer at the »

Harry Dean Stanton: An Enigmatic Icon Whose Final Starring Role Might Be His Best

16 September 2017 4:41 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As Ry Cooder’s slide guitar sounds melancholy echoes, the man suddenly appears in the desert, walking purposely toward some vague destination off in the distance. His sunbaked face covered with several days of beard, his pinstripe suit dusty and ill-matched with a red baseball cap, he is plainly driven by some inner demons. Just as plainly, he isn’t going to last much longer.

That’s how Harry Dean Stanton first appears in “Paris, Texas,” the classic 1984 drama directed by Wim Wenders from a screenplay credited to Sam Shepard and L.M. Kit Carson. And while taking stock of the much-respected actor on the occasion of his passing — Stanton died Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 91 — I cannot help viewing that unforgettable image as metaphoric: After a long trudge through a wilderness of secondary roles, he finally broke through in this film to get the attention he so richly deserved.

CBS planning L.A. Confidential TV series

10 September 2017 7:25 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

According to Variety, CBS is developing a TV adaptation of L.A. Confidential, which is based upon James Ellroy’s novel of the same name, with Jordan Harper (The Mentalist, Gotham) set to write and executive produce.

The 1990 novel was adapted for the big screen in 1997, with Curtis Hanson directing a cast that included Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, Russel Crowe, Kevin Spacey, James Cromwell, and Danny DeVito. It won two Oscars – Best Supporting Actress (Basinger) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Hanson and Brian Helgeland) – and was nominated for a further seven, including Best Picture.

Following the success of the movie, a TV pilot was shot with Kiefer Sutherland and Eric Roberts starring, but it failed to get a series pickup and was included as a bonus feature on the film’s DVD and Blu-ray release. Ellroy also attempted to get a sequel series off the ground back in 2013, but was unsuccessful. »

Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt on What Drew Them to Amazon Spoof Series ‘Comrade Detective’

4 August 2017 11:11 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and a number of Romanian actors get together to make a television show. It almost sounds like the beginning of joke, and in a way, it is. Confused? We’ll explain.

Tatum, Gordon-Levitt, and their on-screen counterparts, Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici, premiered their new Amazon series, “Comrade Detective,” Thursday evening at the ArcLight Cinema in Hollywood.

The series is a spoof of classic ’80s cop shows, but with a twist: it takes place in Communist Romania with an entirely Romanian cast. English overdubs are provided by Tatum, Gordon-Levitt, and an eclectic collection of other American actors, including Jenny Slate, Nick Offerman, Jason Mantzoukas, and Chloë Sevigny.

Writer and executive producer Alessandro Tanaka said the inspiration for the series came from his appreciation of 1980s films like “Red Dawn” and “Rocky IV.” “These movies that are like Hollywood entertainment, but also had this fiercely anti-Soviet propaganda angle to them,” he »
