Crimes of Passion

Flamboyant artist Ken Russell was eventually sidelined for what the industry calls 'excess,' but he was a genuine artist, as indicated by this, his last American film. Absolutely beyond the pale in terms of polite viewing, it's by turns awkward and insightful, profane... and more profane. What separates exploitation trash from progressive film art? They say it's an artist's vision, and Ken Russell certainly has plenty of that. I can admire Russell's house brand of outrageousness but I also find much of his work just too fussy, too indulgent. He's excellent when trying »

Happy Birthday Ray Harryhausen – Here are His Ten Best Films

29 June 2016 3:36 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, Sam Moffitt, and Tom Stockman

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts  and  The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad  passed away in 2013 at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre “stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done.” It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. The influence of Harryhausen on film luminaries like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, and »

Oscar Winner George Kennedy Dead At Age 91

1 March 2016 9:46 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Lee Pfeiffer

Oscar winning actor George Kennedy has died at age 91, five months after the passing of his wife Joan. Kennedy's popularity as a character actor led to eventual leading man roles in major films. Born in New York City, he experienced stage life early, working with his parents in Vaudeville. During WWII he served under General Patton and was decorated for bravery. He drifted into acting on television in the 1950s. With his imposing physical presence (he was 6'4"), Kennedy immediately found work, generally playing heavies who squared off against the series' heroes. Among the shows he guest-starred on were such hits as "Have Gun, Will Travel", "Rawhide", "Gunsmoke" and "The Untouchables". He crossed into feature films in the early 1960s and first made a splash in Stanley Donen's 1963 comedy thriller "Charade" in which he played a crook with a hook hand who attempts to kill Cary Grant in a rooftop fight. »

Guillermo del Toro is set to take a ‘Fantastic Voyage’

8 January 2016 12:24 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

It is safe to say that Guillermo del Toro‘s Crimson Peak was received with very mixed reviews last year. Personally, I struggled with the film when we got a chance to see it. However, while I wasn’t alone in my thinking, there were a lot of people who really liked the movie. Well, it looks like del Toro has moved on from the film and set his sights on his next project, which could be a redo of Fantastic Voyage.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, del Toro is in talks with 20th Century Fox and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment to direct a Fantastic Voyage remake at the studio. The film will be written by David Goyer (Man Of Steel), and is about a scientist who is dying of a blood clot. His only chance for survival is for five scientist colleagues to be miniaturized in a ship, »

Don't expect Pacific Rim 2 anytime soon: it looks like it's a Fantastic Voyage next, for James Cameron.

One of the projects that James Cameron has been working on over the past few years is a remake of Fantastic Voyage. It's a film that various directors have come close to making - Paul Greengrass and Roland Emmerich, to name but two), and it's one that Cameron can't do himself, given his immediate commitment to making a trio of further Avatar movies.

Instead? He's recruiting his long-time chum Guillermo del Toro, who's now in talks to helm the remake for 20th Century Fox and Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment.

David Goyer is working on a screenplay for the movie, and will executive produce. The focus again will be on a scientist suffering from what's likely to be a fatal blood clot, who shrinks five of his colleagues and sends them into his bloodstream. »

Guillermo del Toro in Talks for ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Remake

7 January 2016 10:04 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Guillermo del Toro is in talks to develop and direct Fox’s remake of “Fantastic Voyage,” produced by James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

David Goyer is writing the script for the new “Fantastic Voyage,” in which a team of scientists are shrunk to be sent in a miniature submarine inside the body of a scientist to save his life.

The 1966 original, directed by Richard Fleischer, starred Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, Edmond O’Brien and Donald Pleasance and centered on a scientist who had perfected the miniaturization process, defected from behind the Iron Curtain to the West and was left comatose by an assassination attempt. The story was set at the C.M.D.F. (Combined Miniaturized Deterrent Forces) facilities.

Cameron, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini are producing the remake through their Lightstorm banner. Goyer will also executive produce.
