Supporting Actors: The Overlooked and Underrated (part 1 of 5)

23 May 2012 12:39 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

With the Academy Awards for the 2011 film year in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to take a look at one of the event’s most consistently fascinating categories: Best Supporting Actor. The most interesting story in the category this year isn’t who got nominated, it’s who didn’t. More specifically, Albert Brooks was completely robbed of a nomination for his performance as film producer turned lethal gangster Bernie Rose in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive.

As much as I’d like to say I was surprised by this, considering both the quality of performance and Brooks’ slew of nominations from other critical circles, in light of the Academy’s history of overlooking outstanding supporting performances, I simply can’t.

Following is a chronological look at a number of performances richly deserving of a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination.

In some cases, the performances are in films »

Sfiff: Kenneth Branagh Receives Directing Award, Says 'Macbeth' May Be His Next Shakespeare Adaptation

8 May 2012 2:01 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

At the recently concluded San Francisco International Film Festival, Kenneth Branagh was awarded the annual Founder’s Directing Award. Preceding a screening of the director’s 1991 film “Dead Again,” he spoke to Jonathan Moscone, Artistic Director of the the California Shakespeare Theater, about his career thus far. Accordingly, the plays of William Shakespeare and Branagh’s interpretations of those works became the anchor for the two men’s conversation throughout the evening.

While of course Branagh is well regarded for both his directing and acting talents, given that he was receiving a directing award, the focus lingered on the behind-the-camera aspect of his career. He's best known for making Shakespeare accessible to wider audiences, a goal he has long held since his days co-founding the Renaissance Theatre Company in London. When he started to become immersed in the world of Shakespeare, he saw the plays as being excessively limited to enjoyment by high society types. »

DVD Playhouse – May 2012

By Allen Gardner

Shame (20th Century Fox) Director Steve McQueen’s harrowing portrait of a Manhattan sex addict (Michael Fassbender, in the year’s most riveting performance) whose psyche goes into overload when his equally-troubled sister (Carey Mulligan) visits unexpectedly. Exquisitely-made on every level, save for the screenplay, which makes its point after about thirty minutes. While it tries hard to be a modern-day Last Tango in Paris, this fatal flaw makes it fall somewhat short. The much- ballyhooed sex scenes and frontal nudity are the least-interesting things about the film, incidentally, which is still a must-see for discriminating adults who seek out challenging material. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Being John Malkovich (Criterion) Spike Jonze’s madcap film of Charlie Kaufman’s script, regarding a socially-disenfranchised puppeteer (John Cusack) who finds a portal into the mind of actor »

5 May DVD Titles You Should Know About Including '1900,' 'Castle In The Sky' & 'Flareup'

3 May 2012 9:03 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Well we're back again with the bumper crop of must-have DVDs and Blu-rays for the month of May – from historic Italian epics to underground American sensations to a chilly, expressionistic film noir to movies where Raquel Welch plays a Vegas showgirl fleeing a murderer – we’ve got them all hear for you. So look on below to see what's worth your money this month....

"1900" (1976) Blu-ray

Why You Should Care: At the time of its release, Bernardo Bertolucci's historical epic was said to be the most expensive (requiring the financial commitment of three major studios – 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and United Artists) and ambitious ever mounted in Italy. It's a tale of two friends (played by Robert De Niro and Gerard Depardieu), born on the same day at the dawn of the 20th century, and the way that their lives crisscross, intersect, and diverge wildly over the rocky course of history. »

Welch Takes Aim At 'Sex Addict' Culture

13 March 2012 5:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former Hollywood pin-up Raquel Welch has blamed the prevalence of online pornography for breeding a generation of "sex addicts".

The veteran actress, who shot to fame with her iconic bikini-clad image in 1966 movie One Million Years B.C., is adamant attitudes to sex have changed and teenagers are trapped in an "era of porn".

She tells Men's Health magazine, "We've gotten to the point in our culture where we're all sex addicts, literally... This era of porn is at least partially responsible for it. Where is the anticipation and the personalisation?...

"I don't care if I'm becoming one of those old fogeys who says, 'Back in my day we didn't have to hear about sex all the time'. Nobody remembers what it's like to be left to form your own ideas about what's erotic and sexual." »

The 71-year-old also confessed that she had never wanted to wear a fur bikini in what eventually became an iconic image from the film 'One Million Years BC.'

"I think we've gotten to the point in our culture where we're all sex addicts, literally. We have equated happiness in life with as many orgasms as you can possibly pack in," the Telegraph quoted her as telling Men's Health magazine.

Why I'm willing to believe in Johnny Depp's Tonto | Dana Lone Hill

12 March 2012 2:48 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Depp claims Native American heritage, but I don't care whether he can prove it or not. His cred is his talent as an actor

When I first saw the picture of Depp playing Tonto which producer Jerry Bruckheimer sneak-tweeted last week, I was, of course, giddy as always to see Depp, because I have been a fan for most of my life. I am one of those women who feels like they "discovered" him because they have been following his career since the original 21 Jump Street. And now, as Tonto: the make-up was fierce and the head-dress a bit odd – I mean, it is a bird – but it was still "my" Johnny Depp.

I knew when that picture, with a head-dress by a costume designer and face-paint by a make-up artist, surfaced, that there was going to be a stir – an uprising, perhaps – among the American Indian community's social networks. »

Raquel Welch Tells 'Late Late Show' She's Smoked Pot

9 March 2012 3:38 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Screen legend Raquel Welch admitted on "The Late Late Show" (Weeknights, 12:37 a.m. Est on CBS) to having smoked pot.

"I still think that if things are illegal, they're a little more fun," she joked.

Going on to discuss Hollywood's taste for the illegal side of life, Welch was shocked by Craig Ferguson's claim that the town has cleaned up its act in recent years.

"Are you kidding me?" she asked. When he told her he thought everyone was into healthy living nowadays, she just laughed. "Why don't I know about this, then?!" Ferguson cried.

In Welch's experience it's the underemployed in Hollywood who still have a taste for the illicit stuff.

"The Late Late Show" airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. Est on CBS.

Carancho – review

3 March 2012 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Pablo Trapero's noirish drama centring around car crashes and insurance scams in Argentina is claustrophobic but well realised

There are 8,000 deaths and 120,000 people injured on Argentinian roads every year. The statistics are worse, I'm told, in some other countries and insurance companies are being shaken down all round the world. But apparently in deeply corrupt and unjust Argentina a sizable industry has grown up to exploit these accidents, involving the victims, relatives of the dead and maimed, lawyers, the medical profession and the police. This is the background to the latest movie by Pablo Trapero, one of the leaders in the recent resurgence of Latin American cinema.

The 40-year-old Trapero's movies have ranged socially and geographically across Argentina these past 10 years, finding pain and resilience in every corner of the nation. In the heart-warming road movie Familia rodante, an 84-year-old widow persuades a dozen members of her extended family »

Welch Broke Her Foot On Christmas Day

27 February 2012 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Ageing beauty Raquel Welch spent the early part of 2012 hobbling around film sets after refusing to rest her broken left foot.

The One Million Years B.C. star tells WENN she fell down a flight of stairs on Christmas Day, but refused to let the accident stall her work commitments.

She explains, "I get injured doing everything. Christmas Day I came home from dinner and I fell down the stairs and broke my left foot. It was horrible because all I could think of, being an actress, while I was falling was, 'My God, I've got a shoot next week and I won't be able to wear those high heels.'

"They (doctors) wanted to put me in a wheelchair and I said, 'No you won't. I'll figure it out!'" »

Welch Urges Stars To Hit The Beach: 'Sunshine Is Good For You'

26 February 2012 3:01 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie sex symbol Raquel Welch has broken Hollywood's golden sun-tanning rule by urging women to embrace bronzing.

The One Million Years B.C. star is famous for her sun-kissed complexion and she insists a few rays on the beach are good for you.

While many stars opt for fake tans and warn of skin damage from too much sunshine, Welch says, "When you have Latina blood you don't burn like white people, so to speak."

The actress admits her Bolivian father was "very sensitive" when it came to protecting his daughter from too much sun, insisting she wear a hat at the beach, but Welch was too cool to pay attention.

She tells WENN, "I grew up in La Hoya and there were all these surfers and you didn't wear hats to the beach. After high school I would slather the moisturiser on."

Nowadays she takes more precautions: "I wear a huge Greta Garbo hat just to go out for a walk, but I still go and bake on my holidays near the sea and I lie out in the sun. I think we should all spend some time in the sunshine. There's a lot of Vitamin D and it makes you feel good."

And she urges Hollywood's modern beauties to stop worrying about how the sun will prematurely age them: "You've got to live your life and not worry about how you're going to age. It's just too much." »

The Academy Awards have often been prominently featured in major movies from A Star is Born to The Bodyguard. Empire magazine takes a look back at films in which the coveted award plays a significant plot point. Most bizarre, however, the writers failed to name one of the most famous films to feature the Oscar....maybe because the title of the movie didn't give enough of a clue as to what it's about. It's called The Oscar (1966)! »

Oscar Hosts: From Worst To Best, Rating 60 Years Of Academy Awards Emcees (Photos)

22 February 2012 2:18 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

They've tried everything. One host. Two hosts. Four hosts. 32 hosts. Comic hosts. Serious-thespian hosts. Hollywood-legend hosts. Young hosts. Old hosts. Hip hosts. Square hosts. Singing-and-dancing hosts. Every year, it seems, the Academy Awards goes back to the drawing board to figure out what sort of emcee will keep the show lively, attract viewers (especially younger viewers) and keep them from flipping channels during the slow parts. It's a thankless gig; no wonder Billy Crystal, who's done it eight times, decided to sit out for eight years before agreeing to return to host this year's Academy Awards on Sunday night. The job requires a difficult and rare set of skills: a host must entertain both the Hollywood big-shots in the auditorium and regular folks at home. They can poke fun at the huge egos in the room, but can't deflate them with too much snark, and they can't be too inside-baseball. »

Welch: 'I Think Mae West Was A Man'

16 February 2012 5:41 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie beauty Raquel Welch still has her suspicions that Mae West was a male drag queen after getting up close and personal to the silver screen icon during one of her final films, Myra Breckinridge.

The two goddesses spent a lot of time in each other's company on the set of the 1970 film - and Welch admits she started to think there was something more than a little odd about her co-star.

During a Raquel Welch film retrospective in New York at the weekend (11-12Feb12), the still-stunning actress explained, "She never worked before 5pm and... she also never moved by herself, so the limo that took her to the studio, to her dressing room, also brought her onto the set. So they had to open the huge door where they load in scenery. She was kind of like a piece of scenery!

"When I went over to say hello to her (one day) I said, 'Hi, it's Raquel, remember?' She sort of extended her hand to me and I went to kiss the ring and one false fingernail painted silver fell to the floor. I looked at the hand and I thought, 'Oh, I'm getting a vibe'. I really think she's a man!

"At this point in her life all bets are off and you're not going to be able to doll it (appearance) up that much. I would say it's pretty accurate that she resembled a dock worker in drag."

Welch admitted it was a thrill to work with West - but she took away a very bad memory from their time together: "I had this beautiful dress and it was black with a big white ruffle around the neck and a black velvet hat, based on a costume that was worn by Greta Garbo. It was very chic and I couldn't wait to wear it. (Costume designer) Theodora Van Runkle designed it for the scene with Mae West because she was wearing all white with black trim, so this would be perfect.

"Apparently Mae got wind of the fact that I was wearing this exquisite dress and I went to the studio that day for our scene together. I got coiffed, got my hair done and went to the closet to get the dress and it wasn't there. I asked my dresser what happened to the dress and she said, 'It's been confiscated. Mae does not want you to wear that dress. You can wear the red dress that you wore in the last scene!'

"Mae had approval over everything that was worn on the set... The producer said, 'It's (dress) a non-colour and nobody gets to wear non-colours in the movie but Mae.'"

Welch was so outraged, she stormed off the set and refused to return until the dress was back in her closet.

She recalled, "For the scene, we never appeared in a two-shot together. She left after she did her lines and I had someone off-camera reading her lines and I had to pretend she was there." »
