Cameron Dives Into 3D "Fantastic Voyage"

12 December 2009 6:45 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

Director James Cameron has confirmed he will be producing a 3D remake of "Fantastic Voyage" for 20th Century Fox, graphically updating the 1966 science fiction feature.

The original film was written by Harry Kleiner, from a story by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby.

The movie also inspired an animated Filmation TV series and book series by author Issac Asimov.

In "Fantastic Voyage", The Us and Soviet Union develop technology allowing matter to be miniaturized using a process to shrink individual atoms. But the smaller an object is made, the quicker it will revert back to its original size.

Scientist 'Jan Benes', working behind the Iron Curtain, calculates a way to make the shrinking process work indefinitely and with the help of the CIA, escapes to the West, but an assassination attempt leaves him comatose, with a blood clot in his brain.

To save his life, 'Charles Grant' (Stephen Boyd »

Steve McQueen, Lord Of The Apes!

27 November 2009 9:56 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

All similarities to the contrary, this is Not Steve McQueen...Love your website, although I have one question regarding your banner. Who is  the guy pointing the gun (the guy between Raquel Welch and Christopher Lee)? I used to think it was Dr. Cornelius from Planet of the Apes... Is it McQueen?  If it is McQueen it's a very unflattering picture... It's driving me crazy.

Other than that, your website is great.   RomuloRetro responds: First, thank you for your kind words and for being a loyal reader. In fact, the image of the guy pointing the gun in our masthead graphic is indeed Steve McQueen, as depicted on a European release poster for Bullitt. Now, Romulo, we will admit it might not be the most life-like portrait of the iconic star...and we can understand confusing the image with that of another actor--but frickin' Cornelius from Planet of the Apes? »

Since When Did 40 Become Old?

18 November 2009 9:45 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Since when did 40 become the cross over to old age? Now that I am well past my fourth decade, hearing that 40 is old seems pretty ridiculous to me. But, I do remember when I was 45, feeling like I had stepped over the aging threshold. I think that all the negative spin about reaching middle age threw me into an emotional slump. Of course now, with the benefit of hindsight, it seems pretty silly. Things have changed so drastically since our mothers were our age. Women today are incredibly fabulous into their 50's, 60's, and 70's. We have great role models. Look at Diane Sawyer, Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch -- still beautiful, still vivacious, still very sexy and working at what they love to do. Unfortunately, the media has not given any realistic insight into the »

Movieline Explores: James Cameron's Exhaustive Search for the Perfect Avatar Breasts

13 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Playboy: How much did you get into calibrating your movie heroine's hotness?

Cameron: Right from the beginning I said, "She's got to have tits," even though that makes no sense because her race, the Na'vi, aren't placental mammals. I designed her costumes based on a taparrabo, a loincloth thing worn by Mayan Indians. We go to another planet in this movie, so it would be stupid if she ran around in a Brazilian thong or a fur bikini like Raquel Welch in One Million Years B.C.

Playboy: Are her breasts on view?

Cameron: I came up with this free--floating, lion's-mane--like array of feathers, and we strategically lit and angled shots to not draw attention to her breasts, but they're right there. The animation uses a physics-based sim that takes into consideration gravity, air movement and the momentum of her hair, her top....

10 Things I Learned This Week

2 October 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Michael Adams

1. The History of Roller Movies Goes Way Beyond “Whip It

From James Caan skating for his life in “Rollerball” to Raquel Welch doing similar knock ‘em down duties in “Kansas City Bomber,” movies about people on eight wheels have a rich and varied history. Charlie Chaplin got his skates on not only in “Modern Times” but also 20 years earlier in “The Rink” while Missy Piggy took out a mugger on borrowed wheels in “Muppets Take Manhattan.” And there are many, many more. By Peter McAlevey

So there I was with Raquel Welch at Alana Stewart’s book-signing party at the Art House one night last week.   Now, I love Raquel -- I mean, I must have been 12 or so when she posed for that publicity shot in a fur-bikini for “One Million Years B.C.” so you can imagine I was more than thrilled.   We probably spent half-an-hour or so chatting, and I found her charming and way smarter than you would think.   The problem -- Raquel and I agreed -- was that there was no one there to chronicle it ... not us, but Alana’s party,   »

Toronto: Drew Barrymore directs Ellen Page in 'Whip It,' plus two sizzling docs

14 September 2009 12:29 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Roller derby chick flicks aren't novel. I have fond memories from the '70s of catching endless TV replays of The Kansas City Bomber, with its vaguely kinky girl-on-girl aggression (it starred Raquel Welch, who wasn't quite an actress but knew how to get mad). So I was primed to see Whip It, the first movie directed by Drew Barrymore, with Ellen Page as a 17-year-old small-town Texas high school student (Page, with her elfin girlishness, will probably be playing 17-year-olds when she's 37), who lies about her age in order to join the Hurl Scouts, a roller derby team based in Austin. Barrymore is such a nice, sweet person that you may wonder how she could possibly have directed a movie about demon women on wheels whose primary athletic activity consists of bashing each other's bodies. Here's how. Whip It is a nice, sweet roller derby movie. There's no edge to it, »

"Star Babes" : New Comic Pays Tribute To Sci-fi Sirens

18 August 2009 2:21 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Cinema Retro recently received a copy of the new digest-sized comic book Star Babes, a glorious throw-back to the counter-culture comics of the 1960s - and it even features a tribute to Raquel Welch. Here's the official press release.

Independent creator Mike Fisher of Goofa Man Productions has produced a brand new independent book that takes a look at those charismatic curvaceous creatures from the cosmos... Star Babes in "3-D Pete's Star Babe Invasion Special!"!

From “Devil Girl from Mars” to Jane Fonda as “Barbarella,” Star Babes have been a part of our pop culture consciousness for decades. Fisher — and his cartoon buddy, 3-D Pete — takes a look at some of the more noteworthy Star Babes from television and movies.

In a recent interview, Fisher said, “In these trying times, our nation can’t afford to ignore voluptuous women from the stars in skimpy outfits.”

“And another thing,” Fisher went on to rant, »

Clash of the Titans remake: First sighting of a mythical monster

19 July 2009 4:51 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Filming on the remake of the 1981 ancient Greek epic Clash of the Titans is well under way - and we now have our first sighting of a mythical creature.

Fans of the original Ray Harryhausen creature classic will recall that Perseus and his men take on monster scorpions. They grow to gigantic size after beast-man Calibos stabs the severed head of Medusa and her blood spills on the ground.

Well, we can now see the form of a giant scorpion on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, where the remake is partly being filmed (and which also provided the location for the Raquel Welch classic One Million Years B.C.)

I've placed the new image above, at the top, with a scorpion shot from the 1981 adventure below it.

You can watch some footage of the giant scorpions in action below.

In Praise Of Older Women: Planetzman.Com Launches "Cougar Hall Of Fame"

PlanetZMan's Cougar Hall of Fame celebrates legendary and sexy actresses such as Raquel Welch. Gone are the days when the image of middle-aged women was relegated to that of June Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver. Suddenly, older is hotter -though Hollywood still didn't get the memo and continues to under-employ some of our favorite actresses. Our friend Tommy Z, who runs the PlanetZMan web site celebrates legendary female stars with his new Cougar Hall of Fame. This new feature follows in the politically incorrect style of the rest of the web site (which gives tips on the best cigars and fine whiskeys, extols the virtues of large breasts and provides "The 10 Things Ladies Should Never Say to Guys".) The testosterone levels are off the chart on this site, but it's a hell of a lot of fun. Click here to view the initial inductees in the Cougar Hall of »

First set pictures of Clash of the Titans remake

7 May 2009 1:33 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

An Ancient Greek world of heroes, gods and monsters is under construction on the island of Tenerife for the remake of Clash of the Titans - and here are the first set pictures from the location.

Formed by volcanic activity, the Spanish island of Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of Africa.

The original Clash of the Titans was released in 1981 and featured an array of mythical beasts, including snake-haired Medusa, which were all brought to life by stop-motion animation wizard Ray Harryhausen.

Harryhausen was also involved in creating the dinosaurs for the 1966 prehistoric epic One Million Years BC, starring Raquel Welch, which was also filmed on the rugged volcanic terrain of Tenerife.

I reported recently that filming had started in London on the new version of Clash of the Titans.

It stars Terminator Salvation actor Sam Worthington as Perseus, »

AMC Launches Bmc Online

9 April 2009 12:45 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

B-movie fans rejoice. AMC, which some of you may remember at one time stood for "American Movie Classics" until the "classic" portions of the name became rather dubious, has just launched Bmc (B-Movie Classics), a subsidiary of AMC's website streaming classic and not-so-classic B-movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Mac McKean, Vice-President of Digital Media for AMC, tells TV Week: “B-movies may have been low-budget and less publicized motion pictures, but they had a huge fan base that transcended generations and still exists today. Bmc is a new platform that caters to an on-demand audience, giving film lovers direct access to B-movies from the 1950s and ’60s.”

The Bmc website greeting goes a little something like this:

"Bikinis! Monsters! Motorcycles! Welcome to Bmc, your new go-to site for B-movies by the likes of John Carpenter (Dark Star) and Roger Corman (Saga of the Viking Women). Now online and in full screen, »

Did Composer Jerry Goldsmith Recycle His Score?

1 March 2009 4:27 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Issue #4 covers the filming of 100 Rifles in our tribute Jim Brown: The First Black Action Hero. Here, big Jim gets up close and personal with Raquel Welch in their groundbreaking love scene. Following our recent reference to the 1976 western The Last Hard Men, Graham Rye wrote to tell us that Jerry Goldsmith's score for the film was primarily lifted from his earlier work on 100 Rifles.

See if you agree with Graham's observations:

"It was more or less the same score, slightly differently arranged, but the main them was the same. I remember from when I originally saw The Last Hard Men in the cinema. As I sat watching it, I thought, "Blimey, he's used the same score from 100 Rifles (a score I particularly enjoyed in 1969) - crafty bugger!" I had a LeRoy Holmes LP that covered a number of western themes, one of which was 100 Rifles. I think »
