While at MGM in 1941, Shirley's mother turned down Babes on Broadway (1941), Panama Hattie (1942), National Velvet (1944), an Andy Hardy entry and Barnacle Bill (1941) for Shirley as not showcasing the child star properly. MGM finally put her into Kathleen (1941) and settled her contract. See more »
