14 July 2009 3:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

The world of movie marketing certainly has changed over the years, and some of the greatest films to ever come out of Hollywood never got the chance to have high powered marketing teams behind them creating multi-million dollar campaigns. DVD Playhouse—July 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

'Lonesome Pine' On DVD

13 July 2009 11:43 AM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

One of the most beautiful movies ever made in classic Technicolor, "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" arrives on DVD today in a gorgeous restoration of this backwoods melodrama starring Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray and Sylvia Sidney.

The jury was still out on Technicolor's improved three-strip process -- the independently made "Becky Sharp" and "The Dancing Pirate" were flops -- when Paramount released the first major studio feature, and the first shot outdoors, in January 1936.

Where the first two features were shot under rigorously controlled conditions on soundstages,

Trail of the Lonesome Pine - DVD Review

.We .uns is strange people.. An interesting bit of 1936 cornpone from director Henry Hathaway features Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, and Sylvia Sidney. It.s a story is as old as the hills but it.s the historical significance of the film that gets the interest as it was the third film to be shot with the three strip Technicolor process. The Tollivers and the Falins have been a.feudin. as long as either clan can remember. So long that neither family can really remember what started the feud. The Tolliver family consists of pappy Judd (Fred Stone) ma Melissa (Beulah Bondi), and kid-folks June (Sylvia Sidney) and the wee Buddie (the uber-cute Spanky McFarland). Cousin Dave (Henry Fonda) also lives

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: July 7, 2009

7 July 2009 2:16 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Knowing I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one and you can read that right here. I still find this a fascinating movie and definitely recommend everyone check it out at least once, but the second time around the two hour runtime does begin to really weigh on you and I didn't end up finding anything new that I hadn't noticed already. I personally hoped for more from a second viewing but came up empty. Not sure this one is a purchase, but do give it a chance if you haven't seen it yet. The Unborn (Unrated) Meh, not a very good movie to begin with (read my theatrical review here) and I highly doubt this supposed "unrated" cut will be any better. If you want to see a low-rent PG-13 horror I would recommend The Uninvited over this one.

Old Ass Movies: Go West With ‘The Ox-Bow Incident’

28 June 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | From FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news

Every week, Film School Rejects presents a film that was made before you were born and tells you why you should like it. This week, Old Ass Movies presents: The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) The Ox-Bow Incident is the story of a lynching that went right, but in the wrong way. Simple as an old man's morality tale and painfully to the point, it covers a timeless debate concerning law, justice and the misconceptions they suffer in our hands and minds. William Wellman and Lamar Trotti's film is frighteningly relevant and downright haunting at first sight. Two regular cowboys, Gil Carter (Henry Fonda) and Art Croft (Harry Morgan) enter a shabby town somewhere in the wild west. Looking for a certain girl, whiskey and any kind of action they go to the only saloon around where they run into a couple of local ranchers and a general bad mood over the cattle-rustling raids that's been plaguing the business

Fonda Slams Fitness Claims

22 June 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Jane Fonda has blasted reports her famous 'Workouts' are responsible for her recent knee replacement surgery, insisting she suffers from a hereditary form of arthritis.

The actress has a reconstructed left knee and critics claim the surgery would not have been necessary had it not been for Fonda's excessive exercise regime.

One online report suggested the fitness fanatic's famous Jane Fonda Workout programmes, which became cult viewing in the late 1970s and 1980s, were to blame.

But Fonda insists bad genes are the real cause.

In a post-surgery blog, the actress writes, "A recent article in the Daily Mail (newspaper) reports that my knee replacement surgery was the result of years of repetitive pounding from doing my Jane Fonda Workout programs. Wrong! It is a result of osteoarthritis which my father, Henry Fonda, also suffered from, as does my brother, Peter, who may need hip replacement soon.

"You never saw them doing the Jane Fonda Workouts.

"My family’s osteoarthritis (the gradual disappearance of joint cartilage) is a matter of genes, not working out."

The actress adds she's amazed her fitness routines were singled out for blame - considering she has famously abused her body in other ways throughout her life.

Fonda writes, "I am sure that my 25 years of eating disorders didn’t help the condition, and perhaps my decade of running made it worse. But sooner or later I would have needed joint replacement even if I had been totally sedentary."

Drew Barrymore once again was snapped hanging out together with her estranged boyfriend Justin Long. This time, both of them were spotted walking hand-in-hand after watching Green Day's concert at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California on Thursday, June 4.

This wasn't the first time that Drew Barrymore and Justin Long were pictured spending quality time together since they broke up in July 2008. As of late, the "He's Just Not That Into You" co-stars were seen vacationing at Disneyland.

"They were really excited and acting like kids, holding hands and acting all lovey-dovey," a source told Radar Online of the pair. "Their friends were dressed up as Indians and [Drew] and Justin were dressed like pirates. She had a mustache drawn on her face!"

Two months ago, the couple sparked reunion rumors because they reportedly engaged in full public display of affection for several hours when they made a visit to Hollywood hotspot Bar Marmont.

Ken Annakin: 1914-2009 -- An Appreciation

Director Ken Annakin.

I knew there was something familiar about the name when I read it: "Deborah Annakin-Peters." I had been corresponding with Debby via email for nearly a year after she had started working for Home Video Publicity at Paramount, and handled all my DVD requests. Then one day it struck me. I wrote her a quick email: "Are you, by chance, related to the director Ken Annakin?" I got a quick reply "Sure am. He's my dad!" It just happened that Annakin's most famous film, "The Longest Day," was getting a special edition DVD release from 20th Century Fox in a few weeks. I asked Debby if her father, then in his early 90s, was up to doing an interview. The answer to that question lies in the conversation below.

I was lucky enough to get to know Ken Annakin quite well over the next year or so when my producing partner,

The family, living on Walton's Mountain, is played by Ralph Waite, Michael Learned, Will Geer, Ellen Corby, Richard Thomas, Jon Walmsley, Mary Beth McDonough, Eric Scott, Judy Norton-Taylor, David W. Harper, and Kami Cotler.

The mountain setting is also home to several other townspeople played by Mary Jackson, Helen Kleeb, Joe Conley, Ronnie Claire Edwards, Lynn Hamilton, and Robert Donner.

As the series wore on, the family grew through weddings and births. There were also a few notable cast changes. Thomas
