Iron Man 3 (2013)
When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.
Director:Shane Black |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Tony Stark faced an unbeatable foe the last time out: the sophomore slump that was Iron Man 2. Having succumbed to an ill-advised storyline that turned much of the spotlight on Stark's narcissism (or RDJ's, perhaps), the franchise first shook things up by bringing in fan-favorite Shane Black to write and direct this installment, which traffics in The Mandarin, Iron Man's toughest-ever opponent.
Den skaldede frisør (2012) - [Limited]
A hairdresser who has lost her hair to cancer finds out her husband is having an affair, travels to Italy for her daughter's wedding and meets a widower who still blames the world for the loss of his wife.
Director:Susanne Bier |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: It's rare to see Susanne Bier angle for laughs, so interest in her latest project has been high from its announcement. Though we hear the dynamics between Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm's characters offers up some heady themes against an almost fairy tale aesthetic created by Bier and her cinematographer. This one could linger in theaters for most of the summer.
Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's (2013) - [Limited]
A documentary on the Manhattan department store with interviews from an array of fashion designers, style icons, and celebrities.
Director:Matthew Miele |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Filmmaker Matthew Miele dedicated one year to interviews with Bergdorf's enthusiasts from the fashion industry and beyond; in total, it's reported that he spoke with nearly 200 people at the fabled department store that apparently didn't have much of a historical archive of its own. Of all his subjects, we hear window designer David Hoey gives the documentary its soul.
The Iceman (2012) - [Limited]
The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.
Director:Ariel Vromen |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Just think: When Man of Steel makes Michael Shannon a household name, people will be able to sift through his other films and find gems like this true story of a husband, father, sociopath, and killer. We hear the director makes a wise decision to keep the focus on Shannon, and that David Schwimmer (who is piecing together an admirable indie-film resume) is barely recognizable in his role.
Something in the Air (2012) - [Limited]- Drama
In the months after the heady weeks of May '68, a group of young Europeans search for a way to continue the revolution believed to be just beginning.
Director:Olivier Assayas |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: You can always count on director Olivier Assayas when it comes to a historical narrative; his Carlos mini-series was masterful, so we're kinda breathless - awaiting his look at the era of Charles de Gaulle and a politically shifting France.
What Maisie Knew (2012) - [Limited]
In New York City, a young girl is caught in the middle of her parents' bitter divorce and custody battle.
|
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Directing duo Scott McGehee and David Siegel have come to specialize in touchy family dynamics in films such as Bee Season and The Deep End, and their latest, an adaptation of Henry James's novel, pits Julianne Moore against Steve Coogan. Something tells me this might make a better play than movie ...
Kiss of the Damned (2012) - [Limited]
The vampire Djuna resists the advances of Paolo, but soon gives in to their passion. When her trouble-making sister unexpectedly comes to visit, Djuna's love is threatened, and the whole vampire community becomes endangered.
Director:Xan Cassavetes |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Director Xan Cassavetes makes her feature debut (it's been nearly a decade since her excellent, highly highly recommended documentary Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession) with a throwback-looking genre film starring the hypnotic Josephine de La Baume, who will also be seen in Rush later this year.
Greetings from Tim Buckley (2012) - [Limited]Drama
A chronicle of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley's performance at his father's tribute concert in 1991.
Director:Daniel Algrant |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: With "Gossip Girl" in his past, Penn Badgley, like Derek Zoolander before him, is pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And he plan on finding out what that is. We hear his closing performance as Jeff Buckley proves there's a career here if he can continue to find the right film projects.
Generation Um... (2012) - [Limited]
Three adults during a single day in New York City, one filled with sex, drugs, and indecision.
Director:Mark Mann |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: I've read some rough reviews of this New York City-set indie (this one wins) that focuses on the ennui of a Keanu Reeves character, which could mean there's a high profile new offering for people who enjoy hate-watching film.
Dead Man's Burden (2012) - [Limited]- Western
A western set on the New Mexico frontier a few years after the Civil War and centered on a struggling young family and the mining company who wants to buy their land.
Director:Jared Moshe |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: "Nashville" co-star Clare Bowen leads this Western update that has received incredibly strong reviews. Will word-of-mouth success follow?
First Night (2010) - [Limited]- Comedy | Musical | Romance
Adam is a rich industrialist, who aspires to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he is little more than a city suit living the capitalist's dream, this frustrated amateur opera singer decides to throw an opera in his lavish country retreat. Once his friends see him belting out the notes, he feels sure it will spell the end to their shallow taunts. In fact, it might even help him win the hand of a female conductor he has been pursuing whom - it just so happens - is the first to be recruited for his showpiece.
Director:Christopher Menaul |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Director Christopher Menaul has been in the news of late as his upcoming film, Summer in February, features Emily Browning, Dominic Cooper, and Dan Stevens of "Downton Abbey" caught in a love triangle. 1st Night is a few years old at this point, and it hasn't enjoyed the lighthearted reviews typically reserved for depictions of sophisticates baring all their secrets while on holiday.
Cinco de Mayo, La Batalla (2013) - [Limited]
On May 5th, 1862, a few thousand Mexican soldiers put their lives on the line against the world's largest and most powerful army in one legendary battle for freedom and for Mexico.
Director:Rafa Lara |
|
The Buzz: Rafa Lara's chronicle of Mexico's Battle of Puebla could find a home in the box office top 12 this weekend if Pantelion Films' typically sharp marketing is on point.
