Prometheus (2012)
A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.
Director:Ridley Scott |

The Buzz: It's official: add any "Lost" creative mind to your project, and suddenly every detail becomes part of a larger mythology steeped in layers within layers. In this case, co-writer Damon Lindelof has been the chief rumor-mill architect, offering bits of character information while we sit here and wonder just how closely Prometheus will be tied to the Alien bloodline. Ridley Scott's lips are sealed as he alludes to not just the Alien universe, but also Blade Runner's. My best guess is that Michael Fassbender's robot and a heroic Noomi Rapace are the ones left standing.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.

The Buzz: A huge worldwide hit, Alex and his pals might stall their return to NYC until Paramount decides how to continue or spin off this story. (Isn't it time one of these characters had a baby?)
Lola Versus (2012) - [limited]
Dumped by her boyfriend just three weeks before their wedding, Lola enlists her close friends for a series of adventures she hopes will help her come to terms with approaching 30 as a single woman.
Director:Daryl Wein |

The Buzz: It hasn't taken long for Greta Gerwig to swap her Mumblecore crown for a career that is less about being an It Girl and more about working constantly. (Granted, I choked every time she appeared in Arthur but, you know, sometimes you have agents/managers/publicists/lawyers to pay.) Before her brief appearance in The House of the Devil, her most revelatory outing was in Nights and Weekends, but the projects she has in front of her should build on her best performance to date in Damsels in Distress, Whit Stillman's comeback comedy of manners. Lola is the second project from Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister Jones, who co-wrote/co-starred in Wein's Breaking Upwards. We're also looking forward to Hamish Linklater's role as one of Lola's pals (I loved him in The Future, the film I argue the most about with my drinking buddy) and Joel Kinnaman as the guy who wisely (or naively) dumps her.
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) - [limited]
Three magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a companion for time travel.
Director:Colin Trevorrow |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: I've heard Safety guarantees that Mark Duplass (the guy who submits the ad) is getting better with each performance, and the offbeat subject matter is a custom fit for the Duplass Mindset. I hear the story has a bonkers conclusion that rivals your standard action/adventure blockbuster, and I am thinking we'll see a teaser of the spectacle in the official trailer in order to build come mainstream buzz for the release.
Bel Ami (2012) - [limited]
A chronicle of a young man's rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city's most influential and wealthy women.

The Buzz: While Cronenberg's Cosmopolis looks fit to convert Robert Pattinson non-believers, his second period turn (after Little Ashes) in the umpeenth translation of Guy de Maupassant's text apparently reinforces the notion that he is made out of wood. And reports indicate that Kristin Scott Thomas is incredibly miscast.
Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding (2011) - [limited]
An uptight NYC lawyer takes her two teenagers to her hippie mother's farmhouse upstate for a family vacation.
Director:Bruce Beresford |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Bruce Beresford's got his crowd-pleasing groove back, as the Driving Miss Daisy director landed a big indie hit recently with Mao's Last Dancer, and his latest finds Jane Fonda dealing weed and matchmaking in a typically hippie upstate New York community until her estranged daughter and grandkids come up from the city. Isn't Catherine Keener always estranged?
Dark Horse (2011) - [LA/NYC]- Drama
Romance blooms between two thirty-somethings in arrested development: an avid toy collector and a woman who is the dark horse of her family.
Director:Todd Solondz |
|
| Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Has Todd Solondz found a version of contentment in his 50s? With his newest work and the recent Life During Wartime, the acerbic barbs have been reduced and the sense of hopelessness has been replaced by something that would be called Acceptance in therapy terms. One thing is for sure: his U.S. distribution isn't as measured as it used to be; Wartime had one of those deals where a few indies huddled together on the release, while his newest is being handled by a company better known for its DVD/VOD library.
