Skin's best SF movies you have never seen.
Hi There
I have always loved "Genre" movies, horror, SF, fantasy, and i've seen a lotttt of them over the years.
Well here are few science fiction movies that i consider lost ...well if not classics then certainly well worth a watch, there are some old, some new some foreign and some that many would not consider SF at all, but it's my own list and my own peculiar choices, i hope that you will find something that tickles your interest enough that you will find the time to give them a viewing trust me they are worth it....well without further ado here we go, in no particular order kicking off with....
PS...If anyone vaguely connected with the film industry ever reads this can we please please PLEASE have a version of Roadside Picnic hands down the greatest SF novella of all.

- DirectorL.Q. JonesStarsDon JohnsonJason RobardsSusanne BentonIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a boy who can communicate with his dog telepathically is targeted by a mysterious committee. Not as obscure as it used to be this was a bit of a lost classic, based on a Harlan Ellison story and starring a young Don Johnson (yes THAT Don Johnson) and his best friend a telepathic dog called blood...that alone should make you want to watch it, they range the post apocalyptic desert until a fateful encounter, clever, witty and utterly hatstand, give it a whirl on arrowfilms shiny new transfer onto DVD...incidentally one of my favourite endings in SF, great stuff
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsSean GulletteMark MargolisBen ShenkmanA paranoid mathematician searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature. What a headf..k !, Darren Aronofsky's indie masterpiece, blending number theory, game theory, conspiracy theory, kabbalah, biblical prediction, computers and deep DEEP paranoia, this wont be for everyone but i LOVED it's dark gut wrenching vision, made for $60k this is the SF equivalent of Blair Witch, guerilla filmaking at it's best.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJennifer O'NeillStephen LackPatrick McGoohanA scientist trains a man with an advanced telepathic ability called "scanning" to stop a dangerous Scanner with extraordinary psychic powers from waging war against non scanners. Is it SF? or is it Horror? or a scathing critique on american futurism?, who cares it has exploding heads, popping veins and an utterly f--kin bananas eye rolling performance from Michael Ironside as the renegade telekinetic psycho Daryl Revok.
One of the few films to portray the sheer power of telekinesis, it makes "Carries" finale look like a church day out.
It's one of my favourite Cronenberg flicks, if you havent seen it do so...."REVOkkkkkkkkk" - DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsNatalya BondarchukDonatas BanionisJüri JärvetA psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.Beautiful, lyrical, slow paced, baffling, an undeniable masterpiece by the finest director of them all Andrey Tarkovsky.
A perfect counterpoint to all the slam bang hollywood "Gosh, wow" sf films, here there is no sledgehammer moralising, no spoon fed messages and definitely no easy answers, DONT watch the remake please but immerse your self in this, arguably the finest cerebral SF film of all time. - DirectorSaul BassStarsNigel DavenportMichael MurphyLynne FrederickSuddenly, desert ants form a group intelligence and wage war on the humans. It's up to a couple of scientists and a girl to stop themThis is my entry for the time honored SF "Monster movie" but you wont find anyone in a rubber monster suit here.
Hallucinogenic, slow burning, intelligent and absolutely swathed in atmosphere this really is worth a watch, desert ants start to form a collective intelligence observed by two scientists, from this simple premise Saul Bass (never to direct again, a tragedy) delivers a taut, and genuinely unsettling film, the studio apparently butchered the ending, i would love to see a directors cut of this, and a new transfer please. PS....perhaps the most misleading poster ever completely ignore it. - DirectorDavid TwohyStarsVin DieselJudi DenchColm FeoreThe wanted criminal Richard Bruno Riddick arrives on a planet called Helion Prime and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe. This is a real marmite movie, love it or hate it, this gets a ridiculously low score on IMDB, but for my own money this is a finely crafted, well made, well acted and superbly designed space opera.
Vin Diesel carries off the lead roll effortlessly in a strongly scripted gem. The set design and the production design in general is absolutely outstanding and i cannot understand why this was so overlooked on release a very worthy follow up to pitch black indeed "you made 3 mistakes"..heh - DirectorNorman JewisonStarsJames CaanJohn HousemanMaud AdamsIn a corporate-controlled future, an ultra-violent sport known as Rollerball represents the world, and one of its powerful athletes is out to defy those who want him out of the game.Perhaps a little popular for a "Never seen list" but these days would most people check out the remake first?, if so a word of warning DONTTTT.
This is a real classic, thoughtful yet fearsomely kinetic, great characters and ferocious action screens, James Caans greatest moment as the legendary Jonathan E battling an uncaring corporate world, watch it love it remember it...."lose some data?, yes the thirteenth century" - DirectorTobe HooperStarsSteve RailsbackMathilda MayPeter FirthA race of space vampires arrives in London and infects the populace, beginning an apocalyptic descent into chaos.Oh this is a real guilty pleasure, directed with verve by Tobe Hooper, he of the texas chainsaw massacre, and scripted by Alien's Dan O'Bannon this is the very pinnacle of the space vampire sub genre (quite a small genre admittedly:)
Starring the jaw droppingly beautiful Mathilda May who spends the majority of time naked it's a real rollercoaster of a ride look out for Patrick Stewarts cameo, oh and did i mention that she is NAKED!!! - DirectorKen RussellStarsWilliam HurtBlair BrownBob BalabanA psycho-physiologist experiments with drugs and a sensory-deprivation tank and has visions he believes are genetic memories. The ultimate drug movie?
A scientist ingests heroic amounts of hallucinogens in an attempt to find the primal truth, director Ken Russel assaults the viewer with some really striking, powerful imagey and Bill Hurt is excellent in the lead role, mind you some of the other performances are a bit lame, a flawed rugged gem this one. - DirectorGordon DouglasStarsJames WhitmoreEdmund GwennJoan WeldonThe earliest atomic tests in New Mexico cause common ants to mutate into giant man-eating monsters that threaten civilization.Yeah it's quite popular these days but how HOW could i leave out the ultimate in 50s creature features, a stone cold classic this, giant radioactive mutant ants emerge from the desert to spread havoc in LA, GASP as the ants crush soldiers with giant mandibles of terror ROAR as the plucky hero gets the girl CHEER as the army heroically take on the mutant insectoid menace with flamethrowers. It's fabulous and surprisingly well scripted, AND it has my favourite SF line ever "Aim for the antennae aim for the OTHER antennae"
