- DirectorDomee ShiStarsRosalie ChiangSandra OhAva MorseA thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.Great story and vocal performances. Nailed the early 2000s aesthetic. Worth the watch. Could have used a little more of the epic battle.
- DirectorJohn FrankenheimerStarsBen AffleckGary SiniseCharlize TheronAfter assuming his dead cell-mate's identity to get with the other man's girlfriend, an ex-convict finds himself a reluctant participant in a casino heist.Ridiculous in good and bad ways. Acting was interesting, story was okay with a good, twisty ending. So bad it’s fun to watch-type of movie.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid Arquette25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past.Soooo meeetaaaaa. For real though, good remake of the OG. A lot of the meta jokes were solid and the movie was quick and to the punch. Nice to see some OG members too.
- DirectorDaniel FarrandsStarsMena SuvariNick StahlTaryn ManningInspired by true events, the film follows OJ Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson in the last days before her tragic death on June 12th 1994, as seen from her point of view.Couldn’t even finish this hunk of garbage. Weird fanfaction that boils down to: got a divorce and want to have sex with everyone? Well, you’ll be punished. Mena is a great actress but even Pensatucky couldn’t be compelling. (Dollar Store)
- DirectorBill PaxtonStarsBill PaxtonMatthew McConaugheyPowers BootheA mysterious man arrives at the offices of an FBI agent and recounts his childhood: how his religious fanatic father received visions telling him to destroy people who were in fact "demons."Nice little twisty-turvy, semi-noirish crime movie. Felt a little like an after school special, the way it was produced, which contrasted well with the story itself. McConaughey did a great job, as did everyone else.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others. The musical note fight makes this an 8 immediately, everything else just solidified that. Might be a nine down the line, who knows? The cameos make me feel like it’s an 8.5 for sure.
- DirectorMark L. LesterStarsDrew BarrymoreDavid KeithFreddie JonesA couple who participated in a potent medical experiment gain telepathic ability and then have a child who is pyrokinetic.Exciting and different. I really dig this movie, which makes me even more excited for the remake!
- DirectorJay LeveyStars'Weird Al' YankovicVictoria JacksonKevin McCarthyAn unemployed visionary becomes the manager of a local television station. The station becomes a success, with all sorts of hilarious sight gags and wacky humor.Hilarious and zany. Definitely a fun watch, will have to revisit.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsGerard ButlerMichelle MonaghanMichael ShannonSam Childers is a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who've been forced to become soldiers.Pretty good movie overall. White savior story, rides the line of schlock at some points, and the overall hero/cold blooded killer idea was a little hard to support, but there was solid acting, good action, and an interesting story. While there was good action, it did feel like the movie was unsure if it was action or drama. Worth a watch for sure, probably not a second one though. (Dollar Store)
- DirectorErrol MorrisStarsStephen HawkingIsobel HawkingJanet HumphreyA film about the life and work of the cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, who despite his near total paralysis, was one of the great minds of all time.Criterion Edition. Existential dread laid in-between Stephen’s story, told through interviews of friends and family, layered with a Phillip Glass score. Excellent documentary, but maybe just hard to watch because of the questions it poses. There’s a positive spin towards the end but it’s still tough.
- DirectorMark GreczmielStarsMunson CampbellCharles O. FinleyStan GilbertsonA look at the bizarre history of the defunct NHL team: The California Golden Seals. (1967-76) Famous for their white skates and losing record, the club tried desperately to compete, only to face an almost unbelievable string of obstacles.
- DirectorJon TurteltaubStarsJason StathamBingbing LiRainn WilsonA group of scientists exploring the Marianas Trench encounter the largest marine predator that has ever existed - the Megalodon.Insane movie. Fun ride.
- DirectorAaron NeeAdam NeeStarsSandra BullockChanning TatumDaniel RadcliffeA reclusive romance novelist on a book tour with her cover model gets swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure.Zany and fun, enjoyable. Could have been a little less predictable but that in and of itself is part of the charm of these movies. So, either way, fun watch.
- DirectorJohn L. SpencerStarsRicky GervaisFollows Ricky Gervais as he gives his take on the rules of comedy, spoiling his cat and debunks the supernatural, concluding that actual nature is super enough.
- DirectorSabaah FolayanStarsXXXTentacionCleopatra BernardSolomon SobandeAn inside look at a gifted young rapper's tumultuous coming-of-age with never-before-seen footage, as XXXTentacion's inner circle speaks out for the first time.Compassionate but honest look at XXX’s life and career. Not too much unknown information, more a tidy story for those who didn’t know. Doesn’t mention the prison fight and other controversies, but does a good job covering the main ones. You can see the family trying to fight for his story, I can appreciate that.
- DirectorKeith ThomasStarsZac EfronRyan Kiera ArmstrongSydney LemmonA young girl tries to understand how she mysteriously gained the power to set things on fire with her mind.Solid acting from Zach, the kid, and a few more, but plenty of campy acting from others, as well as some strange dialogue choices. Effects were amazing. The way the story was chopped up, less amazing. I don’t know the book itself, but I can’t imagine this version was more true to the source. Characters and plot points were missing. The ending was different. It was okay but it seems like the original would have made for an easy jumping off point to improve, like Candyman.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsHal HolbrookLeslie NielsenAdrienne BarbeauFive grisly tales from a kid's comic book about a murdered father rising from his grave, a bizarre meteor, a vengeful husband, a mysterious crate's occupant, and a plague of cockroaches.Zany, campy, and ridiculous - a whole lotta fun! Definitely a goofy anthology of 80s camp and Stephen King, but notably as an actor!
