In Sobrante, Webster finds that Geary is in love with Dolores, who arrived earlier. After sending Geary to marry Dolores while he develops the mine, Webster learns that Dolores is Ricardo's sister, although neither knows this. While fighting for the victorious Ricardo, who becomes president, Webster is wounded. He recovers to find Dolores nursing him, and when she says that she does not love Geary, he confesses his love and soon plans are made to marry.

After Nettie confesses, Clara is freed to marry her fiancé and Barbara accepts Spaulding's proposal.

Meanwhile the villagers storm the castle and Roger goes to appease them. Betty saves Roger by commanding them to leave, and her future at the castle seems secure when she and Roger embrace.

Fifi brings Jimmie and his protégé to the notice of her fellow artist, Fred Townsend, who falls in love with Nina. Fred has a great specialist examine Nina's eyes, and assured that an operation would restore her sight, takes her to his mother's home. Townsend tells the boy that the operation will be a success, and is amazed when Jimmie bursts forth in a torrent of words against his fate. Nina will know he is a cripple and not the straight, handsome youth she has pictured. He hurries from the house, and during the ensuing days, when Nina must stay in a darkened room, Jimmie cannot be found. The day comes when the bandages are removed and the operation is a success! That night, in the general hospital, the physician's attention is called to a crippled boy, who had tried to end his life by jumping in the river, but had been rescued. He recognizes Jimmie, hears his story, and a few days later an operation is performed and it becomes evident that he will go forth as straight as Nina's fancy had pictured him. Meantime Nina wonders why Jimmie does not come to see her, as she had not been told about the operation. At last he is brought to her, and Fred Townsend has his reward in watching the happiness of the two youthful lovers.

This is right in line with his thoughts, so that night he sneaks into the nursery, wraps up the baby, and starts for the barn. Meanwhile, through the maid's carelessness, the nursery room catches fire and when Daddy and Mother, aroused by some passerby, attempt to climb the stairs, they are driven back by a burst of flame. Sonny, at the back of the house, hears the fire engines, and runs around to the front, still carrying the baby. While the men are frantically trying to restrain Daddy from rushing up the stairs, Sonny steps up behind him and shouts. With a cry of joy all turn and make a rush for the little fellow, showering caresses on him. The baby is discovered safe and sound and Sonny finds himself the hero of the hour.

From a charming, vivacious girl, Anna Louise becomes a dull, listless drudge, her one passion, her little child, whom she loves dearly. It is only when the man she truly loves returns to find her, that she is aroused to find herself a woman after all with a woman's longing for happiness. She listens to his plea, for she loves him and he loves her. The happiness within her grasp dazzles her, she reaches out for it greedily, she plans to fly with him, but the tug of duty is felt in the hand of a little child and her motherly instinct conquers and masters her longing for dreamed-of happiness. She turns back. The hand of God intervenes, on a country road, miles away, when fighting her hardest battle with herself and her love. She little knows how complete her victory has been for the sake of her child.
